  • Patent number: 4782678
Abstract: A method of minimizing scrap loss in making a drawn container in a multi-die set cupping or end shell press which includes monitoring the sheet for defects before entering the press. The monitor is adapted to detect a defect, send a signal to a control when such defect is detected, and the control thereafter interrupts the operation of the punch of at least the die set in line with the defect when the portion of the sheet having the defect therein enters the die set and suspends such operation until the defect passes through the die set.

  • Patent number: 4779442
Abstract: A method and apparatus for measuring the sidewall tension in a workpiece being drawn through a draw die and/or ironing die. A punch is provided which is adapted to measure and continuously monitor the axial load on the punch nose and the total axial load on the punch, the distribution of such loads around the periphery of the punch, and bending of the punch near the base and nose due to lateral and nonuniform forces acting on the punch as the workpiece is forced through a die or dies. Determination of the forces, their distribution, and punch bending enables accurately determining the tensile stress at any portion of the sidewall.

  • Patent number: 4745792
Abstract: A blankholder having a central opening for applying pressure against the flange of a blank being drawn through a die in a draw press. The blankholder is divided into individual segments defined by its inner and outer peripheries, at least one continuous divisional line intermediate the inner and outer peripheries, and radii extending outwardly from the central axis. Each individual segment is provided with a different power source so that each segment can provide a force to the blank flange independent of the force being applied by any other segment.

  • Patent number: 4709435
Abstract: A system for attaching a bridge deck panel to a bridge structure which allows the panel to expand in lengthwise and sidewise directions independent of a bridge deck support structure. Brackets attached to members of a bridge deck support structure have undercuts on opposing ends which accommodate flanges on the bridge deck panel. Portions of the bracket overlying the undercut and flange prevent the deck panel from being separated from the deck support structure, but do not prevent the deck panel from lengthwise movement independent of the bridge structure due to temperature changes. To enable the panel to move in a sidewise direction, a space is provided between the outermost edge of the deck panel flange and the length of the undercut.

  • Patent number: 4667501
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically straightening portions of a rod assembly having stubs extending outwardly from a yoke connected to the end of a rod and which is used in the electrolytic production of metals. A bent portion of the rod portion of the assembly is straightened by opposing anvils adapted for movement toward one another. As the anvils are closed together, a bent rod portion between them is straightened. The stubs which become toed-in during use are straightened by a stub straightening portion of the apparatus which is inserted between the stubs and actuated against the stubs with sufficient force to remove the toe-in. The apparatus is adapted to perform the straightening automatically on bent rod assemblies which are transported through the apparatus.
