Abstract: A bracket, apparatus and method are provided for adapting a simple draw bar and hitch ball arrangement to allow connection to a sway control device. The bracket includes an aperture for receiving the threaded stem of the hitch ball, a notch for receiving and engaging the draw bar and a second aperture for receiving a sway control device connector such as a sway control ball. The bracket allows connection to any number of sway control devices available in the industry so that a simple draw bar and hitch ball may be converted for sway control capability.

Abstract: A housing for a vehicle component and a method for making the same. The housing comprises a housing body having an interior surface and an exterior surface. The outer wall of the housing is formed with a plurality of longitudinal splines and a plurality of longitudinal troughs located between confronting splines. A spiral groove is cut into the interior surface of the outer wall so as to remove material sufficient to engage at least one of the troughs thereby forming a plurality of apertures having a closed periphery and extending longitudinally along the outer wall.

Abstract: A method and system for determining relevance rankings for pages identified in a search query is provided. In response to the search query, an information retrieval system identifies candidate pages/documents from a network that potentially match the search query. A relevance ranking system determines a relevance value for each of candidate pages so that the most relevant pages are displayed to a user. The relevance value is based on a combination of content-based relevance values of the pages and link values determined from a link structure of the pages. A link value is a function of a probability that a user will follow the link as compared to following all other links. With the present invention, improved relevance rankings are obtained for a candidate set of pages.

Abstract: A hitch ball assembly includes a towing ball having a mounting aperture and an annular race in communication with the mounting aperture. A post includes a base, an axial bore and a plurality of openings in communication with the axial bore. A ball bearing is received in each of these openings. A plunger is axially displaceable in the post between a first position allowing the towing ball to be removed from or attached to the post and a second position for securing the towing ball to the post while allowing the towing ball to turn on the post. A spring, received in the axial bore, engages an end of the plunger and biases the plunger to the first position.

Abstract: A mechanism and method for operating a track-mounted door is disclosed. The mechanism includes a pair of side drums that are connected by first cables to the bottom of the door. The side drums are coaxially mounted on a shaft for simultaneous rotation with a pair of cable drums. The cable drums are connected to high pressure gas struts by second cables. Each second cable is carried around a shiv wheel that slides along a guide track as the second cable moves. Each shiv wheel is operatively connected to one of the gas struts. As the shiv wheel moves along the guide track toward the cable drum, the gas strut is charged. As the shiv wheel moves away from the cable drum, the gas strut is discharged. A standard electric motor and screw driven lift-arm is used to initiate the opening and closing of the door. The charged gas strut stores sufficient energy to overcome friction and gravity to assist the electric motor and lift-arm to open the door.

Abstract: A database management system and method provides access to a data table having structured data and unstructured data. A user interface allows a user to issue instructions to the database management system such as to build an index based on the structured and unstructured data and to search the data table. An indexing logic generates an index structure by combining the structured and unstructured data. With this index structure, a single query can contain search conditions from both the structured data and the unstructured data. In this manner, efficiency for searching the data table for combined structured and unstructured conditions is improved.

Abstract: An integrated marking system is described wherein means for marking or encoding information, preferably in the form of a plurality of machines, are linked and controlled in conjunction with means for processing information. Essentially, the means for processing information can be a software program, implemented via a single computer or a computer network. Likewise, the means for linking and controlling the aforementioned machines is possible via the software in conjunction with the same computer or network. Despite the numerous advantages provided by this system, this level of functionality and control was heretofore unseen in the marking industry.

Abstract: A method and system for optimizing response time for data query rankings and retrieval is provided. In response to a received search query that contains one or more terms, an information retrieval system identifies a candidate set of documents that match any of the terms. Terms are assigned a term weight making them more or less relevant in relation to other terms. A ranking logic defines score bins from a total score range based on possible matched term weights. A relationship is established that classifies a document into a score bin based on a sum of term weights from matched terms. Documents that match more term weights have higher total relevance scores than documents that match less term weights. The most relevant documents are retrievable without having to retrieve the entire set of candidate documents and without having to compute total relevance scores for all the candidate documents.

Abstract: A fifth wheel hitch includes a head assembly having a skid plate with an opening for receiving a king pin of a trailer and a locking jaw assembly for securing the king pin in proper position with the trailer over the skid plate. Additionally, the fifth wheel hitch includes a rocking platform having an arcuate rocking surface and upstanding wings at each end thereof. A pair of pivot pins are provided for mounting the head assembly to the wings of the rocking platform while allowing pivotal/tilting movement of the head assembly in a fore-and-aft direction relative to the rocking platform. A base is provided including a cradle for receiving the rocking platform. The cradle allows side-to-side rocking movement of the rocking platform and the head assembly relative to the base. The base includes first and second pairs of opposed mounting lugs. A pair of mounting pins are received in the first and second pairs of mounting lugs and serve to capture the rocking platform on the cradle of the base.

Abstract: A streamlined method for the mass production of connecting rods is disclosed, with particular applicability for anticipated in the production of rods made from powdered metal materials. The method contemplates the rough grinding of a work piece, followed by the use of a single, flexibly tooled boring machine to create crank and pin bores. The work piece is then fracture split, subjected to a final grinding process and honed to specific tolerances without the need for final boring. The entire inventive process may be implemented on a five work station assembly line, thereby reducing the capital investment in machinery and space required by previously known methods.

Abstract: A mechanical jack that is used with trailers that has a functional combination of several working gears as well as a drop leg feature is disclosed. The mechanical jack has a gearbox having gears that not only have the capacity to handle a relatively heavy load, but also have the ability to handle small and midsize loads while maintaining sufficient and commercially acceptable cranking speeds without excessive force required. The jack includes a crank or handle for use with the mechanical jack that assists in both effective raising and lowering of the jack, as well as efficient transition from one working gear to another. The crank provides an efficient way to change from one operating gear of the jack to another, and facilitates operator use of the mechanical jack to which it is connected, in order to provide improved cranking and improved changing of one operating gear to another.

Abstract: Disclosed herein is a mechanical screw jack comprising: a housing; a mechanical jack stroke limiting nut connected to the housing, the nut having a nut wall, the wall defining an interior female threaded surface and an interior screw travel limiting surface located adjacent to the interior female threaded surface; and a mechanical jack screw having an externally threaded male surface for threadably engaging the interior female threaded surface of the mechanical jack stroke limiting nut and a disruption; wherein the unthreaded screw travel limiting surface is capable of interferingly engaging at least a portion of the disruption to prevent over travel of the threaded screw. A method of limiting screw travel in a mechanical screw jack is also disclosed. Advantageously, screw travel is limited such that a user can over torque the screw, such that the screw can travel with respect to the nut without damaging the threaded portion of the nut.

Abstract: A trailer coupler pivot assembly comprising a pivot mount member connected to a trailer frame member and a hinge bracket connected to a trailer tongue arm. The hinge bracket is pivotally connected to the pivot mount member so that the trailer tongue arm is pivotal relative to the trailer frame member between an open position and a closed position. However, either of the pivot mount member or the hinge bracket comprises a single, prefabricated component to make assembly more efficient and cost effective. With both the pivot mount member and the hinge bracket being single, prefabricate components, the trailer coupler pivot assembly can be more easily installed with fewer components and welds and by less skilled labor.

Abstract: A weight distributing hitch assembly includes a shank, hitch head, spring bar and lift assembly. The lift assembly is preferably removably mountable to the frame members of a trailer frame while the spring bar extends below the frame members relative to the ground. The lift assembly mounts a hanger assembly which engages a cantilevered segment of the spring bar to drive the spring bar from a free state to a loaded state to distribute the hitch load to a towing vehicle as well as to the trailer. A lever assembly mounts the hanger assembly to the lift assembly and supplies mechanical advantage to assist a user during tensioning of the spring bar. By moving the lever assembly, the cam rotates about a pivot. As the hanger assembly is engaged with the cam, the hanger assembly is driven from a disengaged position to an engaged position which moves the spring bar from its free state to its loaded state with a minimum of user effort.

Abstract: A surge brake actuator is disclosed. The actuator includes an actuator housing and a coupler housing movably engaged within the actuator housing. Upper and lower coupler slide channels formed from a plastic material are releasably connected to the coupler housing and contact the actuator housing. The plastic coupler slide channels reduce frictional loss and provides superior brake actuation output when the coupler housing retracts into the actuator housing during braking. The surge brake actuator includes a push rod assembly that also provides superior brake actuation output to the actuator and can engage the actuator during a breakaway event. The surge brake actuator includes a releasably engagable reverse lock that prevents brake actuation while the towing vehicle moves in reverse.

Abstract: A retractable hard top for convertibles, in particular for four-seated convertibles, includes, sequentially, a first, front section, a second section, a third section and a fourth, rear section. Each section has a front, first edge portion and a rear, second edge portion. The first and the second sections substantially form the roof ceiling in the closed position of the hard top, while the third section forms the C-pillar and includes the backlite. The sections are pivotally connected by a linkage which compactly folds the top for storage in a storage compartment. All three sections are inverted and nest within one another, with their respective first edge portions being positioned in the longitudinal vehicle direction behind the second edge portions.

Abstract: A container and method for preventing leakage therefrom through isolating deformation in the container caused by external forces. The container comprises a container wall having an opening therein, the opening capable of receiving a closure bushing with a sealing member wedged between the closure bushing and the container wall, and a weakened portion of the container wall not in wedged engagement with the sealing member capable of bending in response to an external force so as not to deform the portion of the container wall in wedged engagement with the sealing member.

Abstract: A device for closing the socket of a trailer hitch, generally called a coupler lock, generally comprises a locking bar and a base having a plug member, a locking bar-receiving aperture, and an integral locking means for lockingly engaging the locking bar within aperture. When the coupler lock is attached to a trailer coupler, the trailer hitch socket is not accessible without removing the coupler lock with the appropriate key. Thus, theft of an unattended trailer is deterred due to the difficulty in attempting to remove the locking device. Providing a coupler lock having an integral locking mechanism better deters the tampering with or removal of the locking mechanism to remove the coupler lock from the trailer hitch as is possible in the art.
