  • Patent number: 4104095
Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for producing a composite pipe for handling destructive materials under pressure and vacuum conditions. The pipe includes a tubular liner formed of thermoplastic material capable of withstanding the destructive material. A strip of glass fiber fabric is helically wrapped around the outer surface of the liner. Heat is applied externally to the wrapped liner at a sufficient rate to simultaneously melt the exterior surface of the liner and thermally expand the liner radially outwardly into the openings in the fabric. Upon cooling, a permanent mechanical bond is achieved between the liner and the fabric. A layer of fiber glass and resin is then applied to the outer surface of the wrapped liner for structional rigidity and strength.

  • Patent number: 4101254
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a fiber preform for use in molding fiber-reinforced, plastic articles is disclosed. The apparatus includes a perforated form which is rotated about its longitudinal axis while a vacuum is applied internally. Cutters deposit short lengths of fibers on the rotating form by traversing the form from one end to another, and a binder resin is sprayed onto the fibers as they are deposited. The form is cylindrical and at least a major portion of its sidewall is initially covered with a flexible bellows. As the cutters traverse the form, the bellows is collapsed ahead of the cutters to incrementally expose the perforations. An oven is provided to cure the resin while the preform remains on the form.

  • Patent number: 4099557
Abstract: A heat-transporting fluid F is passed over a material C having a high latent heat of fusion and in direct contact therewith so that the fluid and the material exchange heat at a temperature close to the melting point of the material. By contacting the hot fluid F with the material C, this material melts and accumulates heat in the form of latent heat of fusion while cooling the fluid F. When the cold fluid is contacted directly with the material C, this material solidifies and releases heat which is transmitted to the fluid F.

  • Patent number: 4091699
Abstract: The invention relates to a method and device for cutting a bundle of tubes containing a nuclear fuel into pieces having a preset length so that the fuel can be dissolved in a suitable solution. The bundle of tubes is introduced into a guide tube in a shearing machine and is clamped by two side clamps within the tube so as to limit the width of the bundle to the diameter of one tube of the bundle. The side clamps subject the bundle to a sideways thrust so that the tubes in the bundle are maintained contiguous without any excessive curvature. The bundle of tubes is then submitted to a cutting operation at right angles to its major dimension and after the blade has been returned to its inoperative position a safety plate is positioned near the cut section at a distance slightly greater than the forward movement of the bundle between two successive cutting operations. The side clamps are then withdrawn by a limited amount so that the resilience of the tubes causes them to remain in contact with the clamps.

  • Patent number: 4091763
Abstract: A temperature indicator is disclosed which includes a housing providing a transparent window. A bimetal snap disc is located in the housing and is movable from a position spaced from the window to a position immediately adjacent to the window upon reaching a predetermined temperature. The housing includes an opaque fluid which obscures the face of the snap disc from view through the window when it is spaced from the window but allows viewing of the face of the snap disc when immediately adjacent to the window. A suitable indicia is provided on the snap disc which provides an indication that the snap disc has operated by being exposed to the critical temperature. The snap disc is arranged so that it remains in the operated position after being exposed to the critical temperature involved.

  • Patent number: 4091354
Abstract: A bimetal snap disc thermostat is disclosed in which a steel disc cup is provided for strength and/or environmental resistant properties. Positioned within the disc cup is a disc seat formed of aluminum. A bimetal snap disc is positioned in the disc seat and operates the thermostat switch through an axially movable bumper. A ring of rubber like foam material is positioned between the body assembly and the disc on the side of the disc remote from the disc seat. The aluminum disc seat reduces temperature calibration drift of the disc during the cycling of the disc which occurs during the use of the thermostat. The foam ring also tends to reduce bouncing and thereby tends to reduce temperature calibration drift. Also the ring functions to insure that the disc remains properly seated in its aluminum disc seat.

  • Patent number: 4089169
Abstract: A hydraulic system includes a fluid responsive means that controls the effective output of the pump in response to pressurization of signal fluid that is supplied by the pump. The signal fluid is pressurized by flowing through a synthetic signal generator and on into a fluid motor in opposition to the working pressure therein. This signal fluid is directed to the fluid motor by the directional control valve when the directional control valve is in an operating position; and it is directed to a sump by the directional control valve when the directional control valve is in a standby position. The present invention provides pressure actuated means to divert or occlude this signal fluid from the directional control valve except when the directional control valve provides a load sensing flow path which communicates this signal fluid to the fluid motor.
