  • Patent number: 6544400
Abstract: A hydrogen source system delivers a controlled fuel stream to applications, using wicking to control the contact between a mixture of NaBH4, NaOH and H2O and a hydrolyzing catalyst to create a feedback mechanism to automatically maintain a constant pressure production supply of hydrogen. A small compact device packaged for storage, the system operates in any orientation and is mobile. The system is a small portable packaged hydrogen generator for small fuel cells to power applications that are currently powered by batteries. These packaged devices have higher energy per unit mass, higher energy per unit volume, are more convenient for energy users, environmentally less harmful, and less expensive than conventional power sources.

  • Patent number: 6539835
Abstract: A piston machine with at least one axially movable piston in a cylinder is designed with a force conversion mechanism implying sinusoidal piston movement by rotation of the power input or power output shaft of the machine, depending on its application. As the pistons of the machine are fastened perpendicularly to a crosshead yoke (5) at their preferably light, cylindrical piston-rods (2,2′), in which two crosshead slides (14,14′) each are provided on a crank pin journal (7,7′; 8,8′) which is synchronized to perform rotation with mutual opposite directions of rotation (indicated as arrows). This arrangement causes the crosshead slides longitudinally in the yoke to move in exact mutual opposition and to reverse their direction of movement at the exact same time. Thus, the lateral pressure on pistons is completely eliminated and without any addition of any extra balancing mechanism there may be achieved a complete outbalancing of the reciprocating and rotating masses in the machine.

  • Patent number: 6537375
Abstract: According to the invention, different coloured and/or different types of flocks (8, 9) are applied to cover or flock-coat profiled joints or other profiled sections (11) in predetermined areas in a coating station (3) at the very moment when the required holes and separating cuts are made in the cutting and drilling station (4). The flock cabin (10) is divided up in to partial cabins (15, 17, 19) by means of partitions (16, 18) which can be displaced in a corresponding manner towards the profiled section (11) or brought tightly against it. Instead of the above-mentioned partitions (16, 18) or in addition to the partitions (16, 18), axially separating partitions (29, 30) extending in a longitudinal direction of the profiled section (11) are provided. The inventive method enables various coating areas (35, 36, 37) to be obtained on one single profiled section. This makes it possible, for instance, to adapt precisely defined areas, e.g., joint elements in a car body, to the colour of the car or fittings.

  • Patent number: 6538193
Abstract: An emitter for use with a generator has a tube closed at one end, heated from its outside with a water-cooled photovoltaic converter array mounted inside for glass-melting application. Several TPV tubes may be inserted through holes in the insulation into the port sections between the glass-melting furnace and the regenerators. Any one of these tubes may be removed for maintenance at any time and replaced with a closure to close off the hole, without affecting the industrial process. The emitter tube may be a SiC or KANTHAL tube. The tube may be lines on its inside with AR coated tungsten foil or the tungsten may be deposited on the inner tube surface as a film followed by the AR coating. The photovoltaic converter array may comprise a polygonal array of shingle circuits where the circuits are fabricated using low bandgap GaSb cells.

  • Patent number: 6521185
Abstract: A highly-sensitive, rapid response fluorescent probe is based on the affinity of a polymer matrix for an analyte of interest. The probe includes a polymer matrix and a dye immobilized in the matrix. The polymer matrix has an affinity for an analyte of interest and the dye has little or no sensitivity to the analyte of interest when excited by an excitation source in a free state but has significant sensitivity to the analyte of interest when excited by the excitation source when immobilized in the matrix. Sensors incorporating the polymer/fluorophore probes of the present invention have the sensitivity and rapid response needed for detection of chemical agent and biological materials. Sensors using the probes provide sensitivity to Sarin at several hundred parts per trillion in one second or less. That is a notable advance over state-of-the-art detectors that require preconcentration steps, which in turn restrict response times to one minute or more.

  • Patent number: 6508060
Abstract: In a steam motor with a piston engine, the piston engine is included in a closed steam circuit. This steam circuit includes a steam generator, a steam injector for injecting steam into the piston engine, a condenser for condensing the steam emerging from the piston engine to condensed water, and a water feeding pump for feeding the condensed water to the steam generator. The steam generator is heated by hot combustion gas from a combustion unit. The combustion unit burns fuel. The fuel is mixed with fresh air supplied by an air feeding device through a fresh air passage. The fresh air passage usually contains a first heat exchanger for pre-heating the fresh air by heat from the expanded steam emerging from the piston engine, and a second heat exchanger for pre-heating the fresh air by heat from hot waste gas emerging from the steam generator. In order to provide a particularly compact steam motor without adversely affecting the efficiency, a rotary piston engine is used as piston engine.

  • Patent number: 6507163
Abstract: A bridge surface preparation, maintenance and painting system has a truck-mounted man lift with an extensible platform on which robot arms and cameras are mounted. Inflatable bags isolate the area of the bridge being worked on, and an apron catches debris such as from sand blasting. An operator sits at a remote control console on a truck, directs the man lift platform into position, controls the inflating of the barriers and operates and guides the robot arms through master-slave controls while watching video displays. The machine is used for surface preparation, undercoating, finish coat painting and bridge inspections.

  • Patent number: 6496136
Abstract: The method for examining trees comprises directing ground penetrating radar signals into a tree using a radar apparatus connected to a microprocessor control and data acquisition unit via an interface. The tree to be examined is scanned with the radar unit after the radar velocity for that tree is calibrated. The tree is scanned at a selected elevation either by moving a single radar unit along the bark of the tree in a circumferential manner or by moving a radar signal transmitter substantially diametrically opposed to a radar signal receiver along the bark of the tree in a circumferential manner. The microprocessor control and data acquisition unit controls the radar unit and stores and digitizes radar signals for generating a real-time radargram. A cross-sectional map of the tree, a map of the severity, shape, size and location of internal decay and a map of the thickness of remaining wood are then generated from the radargram and the ensemble of saved radar signals.

  • Patent number: 6489553
Abstract: Our cylindrical TPV generator uses low bandgap PV cells mounted on circuits in a polygonal array around an IR emitter. The combustion gases are completely contained within the radiant tube burner. The PV array is mounted inside a leak-tight envelope cooled on its outer surface by either water or air flow. Flanges on either end of this PV array container allow for hermetic seals. A folded back coaxial emitter support tube provides a long path length limiting thermal conduction along its cylindrical wall from the very hot emitter section to the cooled seal flange. In our improved cylindrical TPV generator, we provide for a low temperature catalytic after-burn by providing a perforated turnaround plate coupling between the inner disk stack and the outer disk stack. This perforated turnaround plate provides a small amount of combustion air for the after-burn. A catalyst coating can be provided on the hotter surface of the outer finned disks. The after-burn occurs in the outer finned disk stack.
