  • Patent number: 5650960
Abstract: A method for programming a memory cell is disclosed. The state of the memory cell is determined by the presence or absence of a spacer short. A memory cell has a floating gate, a control gate and an insulating layer separating the floating gate and the control gate. Spacers are deposited on the sides of the control gate and the insulating layer. When the cell is selected to be programmed in the "off" or non-conductive state, the spacers are in contact only with the control gate and the insulating layer. When the cell is selected to be programmed in the "on" or conductive state, the spacers are in contact with the control gate, the insulating layer, and the floating gate, thereby creating a spacer short.

  • Patent number: 5648774
Abstract: The present invention relates to variable length coding (VLC). Variable length coding is a widely-used method in data compression, especially, in the applications of video data communication and storage. Many international standards have adopted this technique in video data compression, for example, JPEG, MPEG, CCITT H.261 and so on. Various implementation methods have been proposed for variable length coding. Most of those methods implement the coding with two-field codes. That is, a code is represented by a code word and a code length. However, in this invention, a three-field representation is used for each code. In comparison with the two-field method, this method not only reduces the storage requirements of the code-book but also reduces the hardware or cost to implement a variable length encoder. Moreover, variable length coding can be implemented using both parallel VLC encoders and serial VLC encoders.

  • Patent number: 5647048
Abstract: Tape formatting, tracking and trick mode data generation provide trick modes for compressed video stored on a video tape. The tape is formatted so that trick mode data is recorded at normal speed within certain areas delineated by predetermined boundaries that are within a maintainable range of a predetermined ideal scan path of the heads. These boundaries are oblique to the normal speed tracks and define trick mode data areas in which trick mode data may be recorded. To facilitate tracking, sync words and trick mode identification codes are interleaved within the trick mode data areas. During tracking, the heads reproduce the sync words and identification codes, and the identification codes that match the currently utilized trick mode are counted. The count during a current interval is compared to a count during a previous interval or a threshold to determine if the heads have locked onto the ideal can path or deviated therefrom.

  • Patent number: 5644367
Abstract: The invention is provided to automatically track the color regardless of the adjustment of the brightness level of a display device. The method provided comprises the first step of calculating a bias voltage, Rb, Gb, Bb, for the Red, Green and Blue cathode respectively, responsive to a brightness voltage applied to the control grid terminal, such that the condition of (Rb-G):(Gb-G):(Bb-G)=(Rbmin-Gmin):(Gbmin-Gmin):(Bbmin-Gmin) holds. The second step of the invention is to output the Rb, Gb, Bb obtained in the first step to each bias voltage input terminal of the video control circuit for the Red, Green and Blue cathode respectively, such that the color of the display device is independent from the change of the brightness value G.

  • Patent number: 5642115
Abstract: A variable length coder is disclosed having a ping-pong zig-zag RAM, a zig-zag FIFO and a variable length integer (VLI), variable length code word (VLC) mixer. The ping-pong zig-zag RAM has a first RAM for processing each odd ordinalled block of the inputted sequence of blocks and a second RAM for processing each even numbered block of the inputted sequence of blocks. The zig-zag FIFO has a comparator circuit, a counter and a FIFO. The comparator circuit is for determining whether or not an inputted coefficient is equal to zero. If the coefficient is non-zero, it is stored in the FIFO. If the coefficient equals zero, the counter increments a count maintained therein. The counter counts the number of zeros in each continuous sequence of zero coefficients in each block and outputs the count for each sequence of zeros for storage in the FIFO. The VLI,VLC mixer has a decoder for receiving the length of a VLC for each VLI,VLC pair and for outputting a mask word depending on the inputted VLC length.

  • Patent number: 5639224
Abstract: The inventive device produces compressed gas. It is provided with a compressor, wherein the compressor has a compression chamber (25), a suction chamber (10) and a pressure chamber (6). The compression chamber (25) can be connected to the suction chamber (10) via a suction valve (12, 21, 54) and to the pressure chamber (6) via a pressure valve (3). When the receiving-end pressure reaches a predetermined level, the pressure chamber (6) is connected to a compressed-air supply container (44). This connection is via a device for the discontinuation of compressing action (23, 51). In addition, the pressure in the pressure chamber (6) is monitored by a control valve (26), which is a sensing device with a control output (38). The sensing device (26) is designed to produce a control signal at the control output (38), when the pressure in the pressure chamber (6) or compression chamber (25) of the compressor reaches or exceeds a predetermined value.

  • Patent number: 5640085
Abstract: A temperature compensation circuit for a power measurement device includes an input sensor, with a temperature-dependent transmission factor (K.sub.H,T), connected to a signal processor with a temperature-dependent transmission factor (K.sub.S,T). Transmission factor (K.sub.S,T) of the signal processor is inversely proportional to a temperature-dependent reference voltage (U.sub.R,N,T), which is inputted to the signal processor in order to render the combined transmission factor (K.sub.H,T .multidot.K.sub.S,T) temperature independent. To accomplish this, a temperature coefficient value of reference voltage (U.sub.R,N,T) must be equal to the sum of a temperature coefficient value of transmission factor (K.sub.H,T) and a temperature coefficient value of transmission factor (K.sub.S,T). The desired temperature coefficient value of reference voltage (U.sub.

  • Patent number: 5638467
Abstract: A bit-reversing method and system are disclosed for linearly scaling an image frame horizontally, vertically or both. The system includes a counter circuit for outputting the current frame-column number of the currently scanned pixel and the current frame-row number of the currently scanned frame-row. The numbers are bit reversed in a converter circuit. The bit-reversed current frame-column number is compared in a comparator circuit to a horizontal scaling constant which equals the number of pixels to be discarded in each frame-row of the image frame. The bit-reversed current frame-row number is compared in the comparator circuit to a vertical scaling constant which equals the number of frame-rows of the image frame to be discarded. If the bit-reversed current frame-row number is greater than the vertical scaling constant then the comparator circuit outputs appropriate signals to a scaling controller and an address generator for storing the currently scanned frame-row in a frame buffer.
