  • Patent number: 5966121
Abstract: An apparatus and method for interfacing with a hypervideo multimedia application when composing and playing same is disclosed. A novel hypervideo control and interface provides for either user-actuated or automatic transitioning between a plurality of video, graphics, textual, animation, and other types of multimedia files. A hypervideo control preferably transitions through distinct lifecycle phases and events as it is presented and removed from an interface display to visually convey to a user the present availability and impending removal of the control from the interface display, thereby providing an intuitive means for navigating a hypervideo application. In one embodiment, a hypervideo editing system includes a wordprocessing system and a separate video playback system.

  • Patent number: 5963739
Abstract: A computer-implemented method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for verifying the total correctness of a computer program with mutually recursive procedures. A computer program is received into the computer as a series of source statements, wherein the source statements include annotations indicating the intended behavior of the source statements. The source statements are translated into an abstract syntax tree and a call graph of the program in the computer, wherein the call graph includes nodes representing procedures and directed arcs between the nodes representing procedure calls. The abstract syntax tree and call graph are analyzed for correctness by invoking a Verification Condition Generator in the computer to generate a set of verification conditions from the abstract syntax tree and call graph. The set of verification conditions are outputted as conditions to be proven to complete a proof of total correctness of the program.

  • Patent number: 5958416
Abstract: The invention provides for peptides and methods of using peptides to block or inhibit a pathogenic autoimmune response to central nervous system components. One class of peptides are antigens derived from mycobacterial heat shock proteins and may immunologically cross-react with or are homologous to myelin components. The peptides can also be derived from myelin components such as 2',3' cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase and immunologically cross-react with and/or are homologous to mycobacterial heat shock proteins. A method of the invention involves administering a pharmaceutical composition including at least one peptide to an animal in an amount effective to block or inhibit a pathogenic autoimmune response to central nervous system components. The peptides are useful for the prevention, and treatment of autoimmune inflammatory central nervous system disease.

  • Patent number: 5960427
Abstract: A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for query simplification by applying generalized inference propagation and generalized transitive closure in SQL queries having selection, projection, join, outer join, and intersection operations. The disclosed transformations and enumeration method unify and solve the problems of 1) unnesting join aggregate queries, and 2) complete enumeration of queries containing outer joins, when the outer join predicate references an aggregated value, or the predicate references more than two base relations in a query subtree. The system first eliminates redundant sub-expressions and modifies expensive binary operations to inexpensive binary operations, then converts complex predicates to simple predicates by application of a generalized selection (GS) operator.

  • Patent number: 5957389
Abstract: The invention relates to a nebuliser comprising a nozzle 3 arranged in a nebulising space and an air inlet flue 5 projecting into the nebulising space. The nebulising space is subdivided by a nebulising space divider into two parts, so that proceeding from the nozzle an aerosol flow occurs from the one part into the other. According to the invention, additional impact faces 7 and 8 are provided in the direct vicinity of the nozzle, which have the effect that only the smallest liquid droplets reach into the upper region of the nebulising space and are available to the patient for therapy.

  • Patent number: 5959255
Abstract: An insulator for attachment to a chain link fence and that is configured so as to support fence strand members generally parallel to the ground. The insulator includes an elongate body portion having first and second ends, with a mounting structure, preferably a clip structure, at the first end of the body portion for attaching the insulator to the chain link fence. A fence strand retainer is disposed at the second end of the body portion for retaining the electric fence strand member. The fence strand retainer is oriented at an acute angle relative to the mounting structure, with the acute angle preferably being about 45 degrees due to the pattern of the mesh forming the chain link fence, such that when the insulator is mounted on the chain link fence and the electric fence strand member is held by the fence strand retainer, the fence strand member will be oriented substantially parallel to the ground.

  • Patent number: 5954416
Abstract: An apparatus for generating a beam of light with a perceived beam having constant brightness comprising a flashlight apparatus having a parabolically shaped reflector, and the flashlight apparatus also having a equal-sided rotating hexagon present along the axis of the reflector. The outside surfaces of the hexagon are covered with a mirror-like surface for deflecting the light rays emanating from a light source located at the focus of a reflector in a changing pattern as the hexagon rotates about its axis, which is perpendicular to the reflector axis. The changing light pattern eliminates a dark area of the beam from the flashlight as the changing pattern directs light rays across the dark area as the hexagon rotates.

  • Patent number: 5956386
Abstract: A system and method for performing diagnostic leakage impedance testing at the subscriber line interface utilizing portions of existing circuitry designated for driving current on the telephone line during normal operation is provided. The diagnostic apparatus is used with a telephone line drive system having a tip-line current-mode amplifier for driving current on the tip line and a ring-line current-mode amplifier for driving current on the ring line during normal operation. A control signal generator generates voltage control signals corresponding to desired subscriber loop voltage characteristics. A voltage sense circuit compares the voltage control signals to actual subscriber loop voltage characteristics resulting from driving the current on the subscriber loop. The current driven onto the subscriber loop is adjusted accordingly.

  • Patent number: 5956126
Abstract: A method and apparatus for treating muscular disorders of the eye. The method comprising placing an object in front of the patient at a predetermined distance and placing a binocular optical system comprising lenses and prisms between the objects and the patient's eyes. A patch is placed over the patient's strong eye and the focal length of the optical system is adjusted so that the objects are clearly resolved by the patient. The patch is removed from the good eye so that the patient can repeat the exercise using both eyes. The object is then placed at a greater distance from the patient and the exercise is repeated until the resolution observed with the patient's weak eye is equal to the resolution observed with the patient's strong eye.
