  • Patent number: 4070147
Abstract: A method of heating a closed metal shell defining a tank having top and bottom portions, comprising positioning a substantially vertical metal tube to extend upwardly from about the bottom of the tank to an opening in the tank top, said tube having insulation for retarding heat flow from the tank interior space into the tube interior space, providing the tank top portion with a plurality of hot gas exhaust ports communicating with the tank upper interior space and the atmosphere, positioning a burner in the bottom portion of the tube, firing the burner with a fuel and directing the resulting flame and hot combustion gases from the burner away from the tube to heat the metal shell, and controllably venting hot gases from the tank through the exhaust ports to the atmosphere by a natural-draft stack-effect thereby reducing the pressure in the tube and inducing atmospheric air to flow downwardly into and through the tube to the burner to supply oxygen for combustion of the fuel.

  • Patent number: 4050236
Abstract: A clock has an ornamental pendulum which serves an aesthetic function but does not control the clock mechanism. The pendulum is mounted for free swinging movement on an oscillating shaft in such a manner that, when the pendulum swings in synchronism with the oscillating shaft, the pendulum will be driven by the shaft, but, when the pendulum swings out of synchronism with the oscillating shaft, the pendulum will eventually stop swinging. Adjusting structure is provided to impart to the pendulum a natural period of swing which is in synchronism with the oscillating shaft.

  • Patent number: 4047870
Abstract: A molding press for forming articles from thermoplastic sheet materials comprises a generally hollow, fluid-tight housing, the lower surface of which comprises a flexible gas-tight diaphragm. The housing is movably positioned above a flat base, on which there is placed a mold covered with a softened sheet of thermoplastic material. During a molding cycle, the housing is lowered and interlocked with the base bringing the diaphragm adjacent the mold, and a fluid under pressure is introduced into the housing, causing the diaphragm to exert a uniform force on the thermoplastic sheet and forcing it to assume the contours of the mold. The base is equipped with mechanical and electrical interlock means which cooperate with the housing to insure that the fluid pressure cannot be applied until the housing and the base are safely interlocked and that the housing cannot be separated from the base while fluid pressure is supplied to the housing.
