  • Patent number: 3992556
Abstract: Food products are supplemented with food supplements comprising finely divided particles of edible, metabolizable fat carrier having mixed therein a nutrient selected from the group consisting of assimilable iron compound, vitamins, minerals and mixtures thereof. Preferably the food supplement is affixed to the food product by applying the supplement to the surface of the food product while said surface is at a temperature above the melting point of the fat carrier.

  • Patent number: 3992266
Abstract: Coal particles are heated and further particulized at a preheat stage employing a preheat gas. Some of the finer coal particles are puffed up by the preheating step. Most of the preheated coal particles are separated from the preheat gas, but some of the finer coal particles remain with the preheat gas. The coal particles separated from the preheat gas are oiled and eventually transported by a carrier gas through a pipeline into a coke oven. The preheat gas and the finer coal particles remaining therewith are separated from each other utilizing a wet scrubber at which the finer coal particles undergo flocculation. Oil vapor vented from the coal particles headed for the coke oven is directed to the wet scrubber to aid in the flocculating step. The flocculated coal particles are separated from the scrubber liquid in a flotation cell. The overflow from the flotation cell is filtered, and the filter cake comprising coal particles is employed as a fuel.

  • Patent number: 3990126
Abstract: A hog head is removed by suspending the carcass in a head-down position, marking the skin of the carcass around the neck, engaging a hook in the jaw of the carcass and applying force to the hook to rotate the head upwardly, and disengage the atlas joint whereby the head is substantially removed from the carcass. Continuous apparatus includes head pulling structure running parallel to and synchronized with the carcass suspension system, and preferably horizontally offset therefrom, so that the carcass assumes a "bellydown" attitude when head-pulling force is applied thereto. Semi-continuous apparatus may apply the required force using a flywheel, a crank, a lever or a fluid driven cylinder.

  • Patent number: 3985508
Abstract: Apparatus for automatically performing multiple chemical analyses of a plurality of liquid specimens. The apparatus comprises apparatus for loading a plurality of test samples from each specimen into a row of reaction vessels. As the reaction vessels are transported to a determinating apparatus, other apparatus adds reagents to preselected ones of the reaction vessels a predetermined time before the reaction vessels reach the determinating apparatus. In particular, each of the several sample containers initially containing the specimens is transported in a track or the like in parallel with the one of the several rows of reaction vessels containing the test samples from the specimen toward the determinating apparatus. Microswitches engage each of the sample containers along the way, enabling the reagent adding apparatus to add selected reagents to the parallel row of reaction vessels.

  • Patent number: 3984877
Abstract: A water level monitor and alarm indicates when the drain valve in a toilet flush tank is improperly seated and water is not filling the flush tank as required. The monitor can also be adjusted to indicate when water is overfilling the flush tank. A hollow tube contains a float and fills with water as the tank fills, lifting the float. If water continues filling the tank after a predetermined level is reached, a portion of the float will trip a switch and indicating devices outside the tank will signal the overfill. When the flush tank empties, water is metered from the hollow tube through a variable size opening and gradually lowers the float contained therein, causing the float to descend at a slower rate than the tank water level. If the tank does not begin filling with water at a proper time to intercept the float, the float will continue to descend, and, at a predetermined level, trigger an alarm to signal that the flush tank is not filling.

  • Patent number: 3978140
Abstract: Organic compounds containing a carboxylic acid or carboxylic acid anhydride group are reduced when contacted with an alkali metal borohydride and a boron trihalide in a liquid medium in which diborane is soluble in the form of a labile borane adduct. Hydrolysis of the reaction mixture then provides a useful synthesis of the corresponding carbinols. The alkali metal borohydride-boron trihalide reagent may either be preformed and reacted subsequently with an organic compound containing a carboxylic acid or anhydride group, or the alkali metal borohydride-boron trihalide reagent may be produced in the presence of an organic compound containing a carboxylic acid or anhydride group. This development makes it possible to synthesize a wide variety of carbinols which are valuable and useful intermediates in organic synthesis.
