Abstract: Ultra-thin hybrid and/or microporous materials and methods for their fabrication are provided. In one embodiment, the exemplary hybrid membranes can be formed including successive surface activation and reaction steps on a porous support that is patterned or non-patterned. The surface activation can be performed using remote plasma exposure to locally activate the exterior surfaces of porous support. Organic/inorganic hybrid precursors such as organometallic silane precursors can be condensed on the locally activated exterior surfaces, whereby ALD reactions can then take place between the condensed hybrid precursors and a reactant. Various embodiments can also include an intermittent replacement of ALD precursors during the membrane formation so as to enhance the hybrid molecular network of the membranes.

Abstract: A book production method and system are disclosed. The method of book production allows an operator to input preferences for a multi-part workflow. The preferences can be communicated to a printer where the books are printed from a loaded plurality of book parts. There can be a deficient or excess number of loaded book parts in relation to that specified in a print job ticket. The user preferences can dictate how the book printer is to handle any deficiency or excess in the book parts. In such cases, the operator and the book printer can take appropriate action, and the book printer can indicate the status of the print job to the operator.

Abstract: An improved battery-powered credential reader, which may be used in security and other applications, includes include a micro-power proximity detector. The micro-power proximity detector is configured to lengthen battery life by reducing power consumption requirements of the credential reader during periods when no credential is present. An antenna formed about a perimeter of a printed circuit board is configured to propagate an electrostatic sense field adjacent to and through the credential reader using only microamps of electrical current. A control circuit of the micro-power proximity detector is configured to activate the credential reader from a “sleep” state when a disturbance in the electrostatic sense field caused by a credential is detected and/or registered.

Abstract: A method and system for distributed tracking of multiple targets is disclosed. Multiple targets to be tracked by a plurality of trackers are detected in a frame. The motion state variable of each of the plurality of trackers is calculated in the E-step of a variational Expectation-Maximization algorithm. Further, the data association variable of each of the plurality of trackers is calculated in the M-step of the algorithm. Depending on the motion state variable and the data association variable, the multiple targets are tracked.

Abstract: A variable diameter helicopter rotor and method of using are disclosed. The variable diameter helicopter rotor includes a rotor hub operable by helicopter controls at variable revolutions per minute, and a linearly extensible rotor blade connected to the rotor hub, a linear span of the rotor blade only adjustable in response to an amount of centrifugal force generated in the rotor blade by a rotational speed of the rotor hub, an operational rotor blade to effect at least lift of the helicopter. The linearly extensible rotor blade can include telescoping inner and outer sections, and a restrictive force device positioned between the inner and outer sections. The variable diameter helicopter rotor can be used by adjusting a linear span of rotor blades connected to the rotor hub by an amount corresponding to an amount of centrifugal force generated in the rotor blades by a rotational speed of the rotor hub.
Abstract: There is provided a discriminative framework for image alignment. Image alignment is generally the process of moving and deforming a template to minimize the distance between the template and an image. There are essentially three elements to image alignment, namely template representation, distance metric, and optimization method. For template representation, given a face dataset with ground truth landmarks, a boosting-based classifier is trained that is able to learn the decision boundary between two classes—the warped images from ground truth landmarks (e.g., positive class) and those from perturbed landmarks (e.g., negative class). A set of trained weak classifiers based on Haar-like rectangular features determines a boosted appearance model. A distance metric is a score from the strong classifier, and image alignment is the process of optimizing (e.g., maximizing) the classification score.
