    Abstract: A dispersant system useful in the formation of dispersions of water soluble polymers is disclosed. The dispersant system comprises two polymers, the first being a copolymer of diallyldimethyl ammonium chloride with a C.sub.6 to C.sub.20 quaternary ammonium salt of a monomer selected the from the group consisting of dialkylaminoalkylacrylates, dialkylaminoalkylmethacrylates, dialkylaminoalkylacrylamides, and dialkylaminoalky (meth) acrylamides as well as certain alkyl esters of acrylic acid. The second polymer is a water soluble cationic polymer composed of at least 20 mole percent of a cationic monomer represented by the formula: ##STR1## where R.sub.4 is either hydrogen or CH.sub.3 ; R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 are each an alkyl group having 1 to 2 carbon atoms; R.sub.7 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having 1 to 2 carbon atoms; A.sub.2 is either an oxygen atom or NH; B.sub.2 is either an alkylene group having 2 to 4 carbon atoms or a hydroxypropylene group and X.sub.2.sup.- is an anionic counterion.

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method of manufacturing dispersions of water-sble cationic vinyl polymers which can be used as process aids for separation processes, e.g. as flocculation aids, coagulation agents, retention agents or dehydration accelerators. The dispersions are produced by radical homopolymerization of cationic, hydrophobically modified vinyl monomers or their copolymerization with water-soluble vinyl monomers in aqueous saline solutions. In this respect block copolymers are used as dispersion stabilizers, and which are formed from a cationic vinyl monomer and ethyleneoxide.

    Abstract: The use of falling-film evaporation and a concentration means such as centrifugal separation to dehydrate and concentrate a water-in-oil polymer emulsion or suspension is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, a water-in-oil polymer composition containing less than about 25% active polymer solids is dehydrated in falling-film evaporator to produce an evaporator concentrate containing less than about 5.0% water. The evaporator concentrate then flows to a separation device such as a centrifuge, wherein oil is removed to produce a composition that is substantially a polymer and emulsifying surfactant-in-oil composition containing in excess of about 60 weight % polymer solids. The centrifuge raffinate may optionally be treated in a second separation means to capture additional polymer solids, with optional recycle of the oil-rich raffinate. The concentrated polymer composition is preferably stabilized with a steric stabilizer to produce a free flowing liquid product.

Following dosing with the polymer, a floc is formed. The floc contains ink and impurities which are removed from the water process stream by means of solid liquid separation; the solid liquid separation comprising a dissolved air flotation method. A preferred copolymer is formed from DADMAC and AcAm.
