Patent number: 4568190Abstract: An electrooptical system and technique for direct quantitative measurement of the mass concentration of monodisperse aerosols by means of filling an enclosed chamber with a cloud or a sequence of separate clouds of essentially transparent and spherical, aerosolized particles or droplets of known density and known or selectively controlled particle size. While within the confines of the chamber the cloud, or each of the sequence of clouds, of aerosolized particles is maintained in a homogeneous condition and irradiated with a beam of high-intensity and constant wavelength irradiation selected to possess a wavelength to particle size ratio wherein attenuation of the irradiation will be almost exclusively, if not nearly entirely, attributable to optical scattering.Type: GrantFiled: October 15, 1984Date of Patent: February 4, 1986Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Hugh R. Carlon, David V. Kimball, Robert J. Wright

Patent number: 4558467Abstract: The present invention discloses a gastight seal for rubber suits. It incls rubber bladders containing viscid material and has annular rings attached to a pleated bellows-like section of a main body of the rubber suit. A strap is used to actuate the rubber bladders which interlock the annular rings which join two sections of the main body of the rubber suit. Thus, an integral gastight seal on the rubber suit section is achieved.Type: GrantFiled: December 17, 1985Date of Patent: December 17, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Irving F. Patent number: 4551092Abstract: Decontaminating an object such as a vehicle, is achieved by subjecting the bject to an elevated temperature for a time sufficient to achieve the desired temperature. The heat source is preferably a jet engine which is supported for universal movement. The temperature of the surface of the object under treatment is determined by sensing the infrared radiation emanating from the surface of the object. In response to the attainment of a predetermined level of infrared radiation, an electric control member is used to regulate the movement of said heat source. Thus heating is caused to be directed at selected regions of the object under treatment for the time period necessary to attain the desired temperature level.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1983Date of Patent: November 5, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: William M. Patent number: 4548120Abstract: An externally powered automatic cannon comprises a receiver, a barrel conted to the receiver and having a bore with a rear end opening toward the receiver, a chamber member having a chamber for a propellant case movable in the chamber and a cam drum rotatable on the receiver and engaged with the chamber member for moving the chamber member from an operating position with the chamber aligned with the rear end of the bore, to a loading position with the chamber misaligned with the rear end of the bore and spaced therefrom. A projectile feeder with ram, rams a projectile into the now exposed rear end of the bore. At the same time a propellant case feeder with ram, rams a propellant casing to the opened chamber. Continued rotation of the cam drum returns the chamber member into its operating position at which time the propellant is ignited to propel the projectile down the barrel bore. The cycle is repeated with each rotation of the cam drum for rapid automatic firing of the cannon.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1983Date of Patent: October 22, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Richard Ciekurs

Patent number: 4535462Abstract: An automatic velocity delay circuit utilizes the output signal of a radio equency velocimeter for determining the time a projectile takes to pass a sensor located at the muzzle end of a gun. The circuit uses this time interval pulse and clocking pulses to provide an X-ray trigger pulse at the precise instant that the projectile passes an X-ray head located at a selected position along a parallel path of projectile travel, thus insuring a photographic record of the projectile in the muzzle blast region.Type: GrantFiled: February 11, 1983Date of Patent: August 13, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Jimmy Q. Patent number: 4519169Abstract: A portable orbiting grinding machine to grind the gas check seat on 155 mm un tubes. The critical sealing surface is ground concentric with the chamber diameter. Instead of moving the gun tube to a specified machine tool, the portable grinding machine can be loaded on a specified tube for grinding the gas check seat then moved to the next tube to start the sequence again. A hydraulically expanded arbor grips the gun tube chamber diameter. An orbital spur gear assembly rotates on the expanding arbor extension and has a longitudinal travel on the extension controlled by a feed mechanism assembly. A removeable grinding quill is held by the spur gear assembly as it rotates. A sleeve type grinding wheel dresser assembly has a blade that may be mechanically actuated to bear against the grinding wheel and is spring loaded away from the grinding wheel when not in use.Type: GrantFiled: November 14, 1983Date of Patent: May 28, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventor: Thomas V. Patent number: 4514135Abstract: The present invention provides transport apparatus for transporting and aculating an article into and out of a housing having limited access, and includes a lifting beam having a curved shape to which is attached a lifting assembly. A hoist device is connected to the lifting assembly for raising and lowering the entire transport apparatus and also includes a worm-drive assembly for moving the lifting assembly relative to the lifting beam to thereby articulate an article about a first axis. In addition, one end of the lifting beam includes a rotational mechanism which is connected to a second worm-drive assembly. Operation of the second worm-drive assembly allows the article to be rotated relative to the lifting beam which allows the article to be rotated relative to a second axis. The combined operations of hoisting and movement about the two axes allows the article to be articulated in any direction for insertion or removal from a housing having limited access.Type: GrantFiled: July 13, 1983Date of Patent: April 30, 1985Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: J. Patent number: 4443803Abstract: A low-profile survivable antenna suitable for military use is described. pite its small size, which might be one tenth of a wavelength, the antenna has reasonable transmission range for these applications. Very little operator attention is needed in use, since a special matching circuit within the antenna network enables effective impedance matching, over a 3:1 frequency range, without necessity of switching to different matching circuits over different frequency bands. By including resistive components along with other passive inductive or capacitive elements, the reactance of the single matching circuit is made to effectively compensate the antenna's impedance over the entire frequency range. The impedance of the circuit has a decreasing positive reactance which compensates for the decreasing negative reactance, with frequency, of the antenna.Type: GrantFiled: November 23, 1981Date of Patent: April 17, 1984Assignee: The United States of America as represented by the Secretary of the ArmyInventors: Charles M.
