    Abstract: Wheels, endless treads, or articulating legs powered by a first drive mechanism support a chassis for movement along a support surface over which are spread one or more regular or irregular shaped objects. A transversely extending, forwardly opening receptacle is mounted to the chassis for receiving and holding the objects. The receptacle is movable by a second drive mechanism about a substantially horizontal axis between a lowered collecting position and a raised dumping position for dispensing collected objects into a collection bin. Working together a pair of sweeper gates mounted at opposite ends of the receptacle can be rotated by a third drive mechanism about respective vertical axes between fully open and fully closed positions. The sweeper gates entrap and pull objects into the receptacle when they are within a predetermined proximity of the receptacle. A remote control allows an operator to control the first, second and third drive mechanisms.

    Abstract: A guide for a video pipe inspection system that includes a camera head and a tubular coil spring having a central axis. A guide member with radially extending fins is configured to surround the tubular spring. At least one pin is removably engageable with the guide member and the tubular coil spring to retain the guide member in position with respect to the tubular coil spring. The straight segments of a pair of opposing U-shaped pins can be inserted into grooves in the guide member so that they extend between adjacent coils of the tubular coil spring. In alternate form, the guide member may include an inner capture ring assembly that receives the pins. An outer yoke assembly surrounds, and is freely rotatable about, the inner capture ring assembly and includes a pair of axles for rotatably supporting a pair of wheels that engage an interior wall of the pipe.

    Abstract: A diaphragm valve module is mounted in the lower end of the outer housing of a pop-up rotor type sprinkler for controlling the flow of water through an inlet in response to actuation of a valve actuator component. A resilient deformable semi-circular snap ring is mounted on top of the module and has a pair of opposing peripheral annular portions. Upon removal of the sprinkler riser, the snap ring can be disengaged from an annular groove formed in the interior wall of the outer housing by manually squeezing the annular portions together. This permits removal of the module for repair or replacement. The annular portions of the snap ring are formed with angled slots that receive projections that extend from the cover of the module to produce a camming movement that uniformly retracts the snap ring out of the annular groove to more readily permit removal of the module.

    Abstract: A frusto-conical strainer is mounted on the lower end of a pop-up riser for filtering out debris from water entering the lower inlet end of a surrounding outer housing to prevent clogging of the nozzle orifice or damage to mechanical components within a sprinkler. A cylindrical scrubber including a circumferential array of resilient arms is anchored at the lower inlet end of the outer housing. Wiper blades on the upper ends of the arms press against the outer surface of the strainer to scrape debris and algae therefrom as the riser extends and retracts. The strainer may have finer and coarser mesh sections for different levels of filtering in a sprinkler having multiple internal water flow paths. A plurality of circumferentially spaced projections on the strainer deflect past a plurality of circumferentially spaced ribs formed on the interior wall of the outer housing to provide a riser ratchet mechanism.

A Pelton turbine is mounted inside the riser for rotation about a horizontal axis, as distinguished from a vertical axis. A drive mechanism connects the turbine to the nozzle so that when the source of pressurized water is turned ON the resulting rotation of the turbine by the pressurized water will rotate the nozzle. The turbine as well as a gear train reduction and a bevel gear reversing mechanism are assembled inside a self-contained clam-shell drive subassembly before being inserted into the riser.

    Abstract: A video camera head adapted for pipe inspection has thermal feedback control of its scene lighting in order to lower its temperature and reduce unwanted noise in the video output signal. The camera head includes a rugged cylindrical camera housing having a hollow interior. A video camera is mounted inside the housing for generating video signals of an image of an interior of a pipe received through a scratch resistant window in a forward end of the housing. The video camera has a CCD with a predetermined maximum operating temperature. A termination assembly and a socket assembly are provided for operatively coupling a video push cable to the camera housing and the video camera, respectively. A large number of LEDs are mounted in the forward end of the housing surrounding the window for illuminating the interior of the pipe. A drive circuit is connected to the LEDs for driving the LEDs with a predetermined electrical drive signal.

The over-center mechanism includes a pair of levers held together by a single coil spring with trunnions on a first lever pivoting in bearing surfaces of a second lever. An L-shaped actuating arm that extends from the second lever is tripped back and forth by a shift disc engaged by a pair of tabs of a turret coupling assembly.

    Abstract: A sprinkler includes a riser having a lower end for receiving a pressurized fluid and a nozzle that is mounted at an upper end of the riser for rotation about an axis. A turbine is mounted for rotation inside the riser. A drive mechanism connects the turbine to the nozzle so that rotation of the turbine by the pressurized fluid rotates the nozzle. The sprinkler includes mechanisms for preventing over-spinning of the turbine when the pressurized fluid is air or a mixture of air and water. Damage to the turbine drive shaft or its bearings due to over-spinning of the turbine is thereby avoided. In one version of the sprinkler, the over-spinning prevention mechanism applies a brake force to the turbine. In another version of the sprinkler, the over-spinning prevention mechanism re-directs air or a mixture of water and air around the turbine.

    Abstract: A polarimeter system that averages multiple retardance measurement samples to cancel the effects of system birefringence in the diagnostic path. The retardance measurement errors arising from system birefringence have a symmetry that repeats over each complete cycle of optical signal rotation cycle. This symmetry is such that averaging the four retardance measurements collected over one complete rotation cycle cancels the effects of system birefringence, leaving a mean retardance measurement free of residual polarization bias. Apparatus is provided for determining the birefringence, thickness, and fiber orientation of the nerve fiber layer at the fundus of the eye by measuring the polarization bias induced in a return beam of polarized light that is reflected at the ocular fundus from an incident beam of a known polarization state. A corneal polarization compensator cancels the birefringent effects of the cornea and other portions of the eye anterior to the fundus.

    Abstract: An adjustable stator is mounted in the lower end of a pop-up sprinkler riser and includes a vertically extending frame portion and a pair of valve portions that extend horizontally from an upper end of the frame portion. A coil spring is squeezed between a lower end of a drive subassembly and a mandrel mounted in a lower end of the frame portion. The mandrel and the frame portion have mating projections which allow the vertical position of the mandrel to be adjusted. This adjusts the downward biasing force exerted by the coil spring against the frame portion and the valve members carried thereby. This varies the pressure of a water stream flowing past a turbine in the riser, and the speed of rotation of the turbine which in turn changes the speed of rotation of a nozzle driven by the turbine.

The array of forward looking LEDs is encased behind a dome-shaped acrylic window which protects the forward looking LEDs from physical impacts and also functions as a light pipe. A side looking video camera is mounted in an inner tube rotatable by a motor drive within the outer housing about a longitudinal axis of the outer housing. The side field of view of the second video camera can be aligned with a predetermined circumferential region of a side wall of the bore hole for locating and inspecting defects in a well casing.

Broken glass falls downwardly between the discs of the lowermost region. Plastic milk bottles and soda pop containers tumble down the trough and eventually fall off its lower end. Newspaper is conveyed upwardly over the terminal upper ends of a pair of vertically inclined regions of the disc screen apparatus. The frame of the disc screen apparatus can incorporate ducting for connecting a source of pressurized air to one or more air manifolds the blow air toward the vertically inclined regions for helping the discs in these regions convey newspaper up the inclined regions and over their terminal upper ends. The angle of inclination of the vertically inclined regions may be adjustable to optimize the efficiency of classification.

Optionally, a relay is coupled between the pilot controls and selected aircraft flight systems. The manager recognizes predetermined override inputs, such as activation of the panic button or receipt of override signals from the remote guidance facility. Responsive to the override input, the manager deactivates on-board control of selected aircraft flight systems and the autopilot system, and directs the autopilot to fly the aircraft to a safe landing. Flight routing and landing instructions are obtained from the remote guidance facility, or by self-evaluating nearby airports in view of the aircraft's position and various preestablished criteria.

An alternate embodiment utilizes a stationary locator in a room which only emits infrared signals with location information encoded in the same which are logged by the player unit.

    Abstract: A micro-switch is mounted within a housing and is electrically connectable to an irrigation controller. The switch has a spring biased actuating lever pivotable between ON and OFF positions. A single disc made of a hygroscopic material is mounted within the housing adjacent the inner end of the lever for absorbing rainfall and rapidly expanding a sufficient amount to move the actuating lever from its ON position to its OFF position to thereby cause the watering program of the irrigation controller to be interrupted. A stack of moisture absorptive discs made of the same hygroscopic material is mounted in the housing adjacent an outer end of the lever. When the stack of discs receives rainfall it slowly expands and maintains the actuating lever in its OFF position after the single hygroscopic disc has dried and contracted to ensure that watering is not re-initiated too soon after a storm.

    Abstract: A narrow-band digital frequency-modulation (FM) limiter-discriminator (LD) receiver with two independent detectors that combine to remove most of the bit errors caused by FM-clicks in an encoded channel. The output of the LD circuit is presented to a sample-and-hold (S&H) detector and to an integrate and dump (I&D) detector. Because the S&H and I&D detector outputs are offset in time by one-half bit and they are not entirely correlated, an error in one does not necessarily imply an error in the other. Using convolutional coding and Viterbi decoding, with threshold-compensation of the I&D detector output and threshold- or envelope-compensation of the S&H detector output, averaging the two compensated detector signals improves the receiver bit error rate (BER) performance by more than 3 dB over the soft-decision thresholded I&D detector alone, which until now was believed to be optimum in the art.
