  • Patent number: 5352113
Abstract: An assembly (15) of a tool (16) and straight edge (27), with a cutting edge (38) extending beyond a member (17) of tool (16) which lies along straight edge (27). The member including cutting edge (38) is supported by member (17) and cuts excess wet cement from a supporting base (22) to form a surface with the cement. A T-bar (37) having a leg (39) is included in the member having cutting edge (38). Edge (38) removes a web 20 of excess fluent material as member (17) slides upwardly along straight edge (27). A distal end (55) of T-bar (37) removes a web (56) of excess material from an interior supporting base (22) in another application. A member (24) adjusts the cutting length of edge (38), being mounted along an edge (19) of tool (16), while a flange (27f) is included in straight edge (27 ) for providing a guide by which member (17) and cutting edge 38 shift uniformly upwardly to remove excess 20 of fluent material.

  • Patent number: 5291943
Abstract: A process for improving the efficiency of heat transfer to a flowing fluid in a tubular heat exchanger by placing an injector on the inlet of each heat exchanger tube, the injector designed to create tangential flow in the tube. The injector used to generate tangential flow comprises a tubular cap with multiple passageways therethrough so that fluid entering the passageways enters the heat exchanger tube along a line tangent to the circumference of the hole extending along the length of the heat exchanger tube. A significant increase in heat transfer at the same pumping power is obtained as a result of the cross sectional shape of the passageway and the dimensions thereof in relationship to the inner diameter of the heat exchanger tube.

  • Patent number: 5242370
Abstract: An automatic centrifuge, especially useful with the Censlide.TM. containers, enables automatic operation in the centrifuging of samples. The centrifugal speed is ramped up to a first speed for about 45 seconds, the first speed maintained for about 15 seconds, the speed is then ramped down to a second speed during a 15 second time interval, and the second speed maintained while the samples are flicked a predetermined number of times. The centrifugal speed is then ramped down to zero. The automatic operation, and flicking enables the samples to be examined in their containers as soon as the automated cycle, requiring a time period of from one and one half minutes to about two minutes, is ended.

  • Patent number: 5147370
Abstract: Disclosed is a coil stent constructed from a nitinol alloy having the ends thereof shaped to interact with a placement device specifically designed to hold the stent in a reduced diameter while it is being maniuplated to its desired position in the patient's body. The placement device is a hollow tube which has holes in it surface allowing placement of the ends of the stent therethrough so that they can be held in place inside the interior of the placement device by a mandril which is threaded through the center of the placement device. The combination of the features of the shapes on the end of the stent, the holes in the placement device and the mandril which passes through the placement device and the shapes on the end of the stent allow the interventional radiologist to accurately and rapidly place the stent in its desired position before it changes shape to its final pre-set configuration.

  • Patent number: 5007897
Abstract: The invention comprises a system for the long term continuous delivery of medication to hollow body organs. It is particularly suited for the deivery of chemotherapy drugs to lesions in the walls of those organs. The invention, specially designed for the treatment of the prostate gland, comprises a urinary drainage catheter which has an additional lumen within the wall thereof, said lumen proximate end connected to a space external of the catheter wall enclosed by a porous membrane. The distal end of the lumen, which is external to the penis when the catheter is positioned in the body, has a valved end for introduction of liquid medication therethrough. In use, the catheter is placed within the urethra, with the porous membrane portion adjacent the prostatic ducts. Medication introduced through said valve is transmitted along the lumen into the space between the catheter and the porous membrane, through the membrane and into contact with the prostatic ducts.
