  • Patent number: 5340062
Abstract: A train control system employs beacon transponders along the track to transmit fixed data to a passing train in addition to dynamic data relating to track availability and routing provided by encoded cab signals transmitted in the track. The fixed data includes the location of block boundaries and distances to such boundaries, timetable speed limits, and the distance to a point along the track at which a speed restriction is in effect. This data and other fixed information is integrated with the dynamic data in an on-board computer which determines train control instructions from the received data and displays the instructions to the train crew. The system is capable of enforcing any restrictive instructions that are not obeyed.

  • Patent number: 5340469
Abstract: Method and apparatus for removing impurities from a laundry wash effluent including the steps and means therefor of acidifying the solution, infusing a gas into the solution and coalescing the released contaminant droplets by means of baffle plates into droplets sufficient to achieve buoyancy with respect to the solution. The resulting top layer of buoyant droplets is skimmed from the solution and the remaining solution is adjusted to a neutral pH for discharge.

  • Patent number: 5326096
Abstract: An aid for simultaneously indicating the degree of slope of lateral and longitudinal contours of a golf green relative to the straight line between ball and cup. The aid comprises a first leg extending along a straight line of ball travel and a second leg normal thereto. A pair of level gauges are positioned within a groove of each leg to indicate an uphill or downhill slope along the straight line of ball travel and/or a downhill or uphill slope lateral to the straight line of ball travel upon placement of the aid on the green. The grooves may be extended to allow for the releasable fit of additional or replacement level scopes therein in order to enhance the longitudinal and/or lateral slope measurements.

  • Patent number: 5325291
Abstract: A method for determining the presence and/or absence of automobile insurance on State registered vehicles utilizes registered vehicle records and insurance record databases as provided by the State and private sectors. The records contain information indicating the presence of insurance on particular vehicles. A computer controlled by a computer software program compares preselected data fields in each vehicle record with corresponding data in the insurance records. Similar data field comparison(s) is (are) made between the records of the insurance database and the vehicle database. Records lacking matching data are moved to an exceptions database for further verification and handling. Vehicle records not having a matching insurance record are checked on a weekly basis to determine if a corresponding insurance record has been entered subsequently into the insurance database. Vehicle records lacking insurance records are indicative of no vehicle insurance and are delivered to authorities for further actions.

  • Patent number: 5318364
Abstract: A closure system for a plastic security bag comprises an access opening of the security bag formed by the displaced top edges of the front and rear panels. An adhesive laden carrier film regulates access thereto. The film has an internal line of serration and is affixed to the bag below the top edge of the front panel. A band of temperature-sensitive "hot melt" is supplied therealong. Upon removal of the releasable liner the carrier film is positioned such that the hot melt contacts the rear panel of the bag with the edges of the carrier film aligned with the edges of the rear panel to preclude purchase of the edges. The bag bears ink indicia which deteriorates upon chemical substances being sprayed thereon in an attempt to fracture the adhesive bond. The flush edges of the bag and/or the water-based indicia preclude an undetected, undesirable access to the bag. The bag has scalloped marginal edges which are separable if one attempts to enter the bag at the marginal edges.

  • Patent number: 5311747
Abstract: A sprinkler system for a condenser unit of an air conditioning system comprises a flue with a temperature responsive valve assembly releasably mounted therein. The flue is mounted atop the protective grill for the system fan so as to channel a portion of the fan's cooling air flow for the condenser therethrough. A bellows senses temperature changes in this air flow and upon a selectable rise in temperature expands so as to urge the valve stem of a two-way poppet valve to a valve opening position. The open valve, connected to a water source, delivers water to an elongated fluid outlet line which is fastened along the grill surrounding the condenser unit. The elongated line comprises a plurality of segments connected by intermediate spray heads. The spray heads circumscribe the condenser with a cooling spray so as to reduce the temperature of the same.

  • Patent number: 5242062
Abstract: A device for displaying greeting cards and the like comprises a flat, relatively thin display member which is secured to a flat mounting surface of a selected support, such as a wall, door or mirror. The cards are inserted into slots in the member, the inserted portion of a card being captured in a narrow space that is provided between the display member and the mounting surface. Special securing means on the member serve as spacers to maintain the narrow capture space and hold the displayed portion of each card in an upright position to be viewed.

  • Patent number: 5240396
Abstract: A co-extrusion head includes a melt housing with bushing housing connected thereto by an intermediate spider. A first resin is injected into the housing through an inlet portion central to a symmetrical annular channel extending through the melt housing for discharge of the first melt at an annular port. Concurrently, a second resin is injected into the housing through a generally straight bore extending between an inlet and outlet port centrally located within the confines of the first annular port. The first resin follows a geometrically balanced flow path from inlet to outlet. The first and second resin flows are directed to a bushing housing by an intermediate spider. Within the bushing housing bore is a pin for forming an external annular channel for the first resin and an internal bore for the second resin. The pin directs the first and second resin flows to a melt juncture so as to meld a core of second resin melt with a surrounding first resin melt.

  • Patent number: 5231393
Abstract: A speed awareness device for allowing passing traffic to perceive from a source other than their own speedometers their true speed. A trailer supports a container within which a radar source is contained operatively connected to a display panel. A suitable source of power operates the radar and display and includes a battery, an optional photo voltaic source to power the battery and a plurality of instrumentalities to preclude or render less likely that the trailer will be moved by unauthorized personnel. These instrumentalities include a removeable trailer hitch, an axle lock, support stands for elevating the trailer and an internal alarm system.

  • Patent number: 5224320
Abstract: A joint connector for a space frame comprises two pairs of opposed brackets having seats for the transverse chords of the grid. Upon securing the brackets one to the other a housing encompasses the intersection of the transverse chords therein. An aperture chord mounting flange extends from each corner and towards the opposing grid of the space frame. Each diagonal chord extending between the upper and lower grids has an aperture mounting plate welded thereto. Upon alignment of apertures between the mounting plate and chord mounting flange, bolt/nut combinations secure one to the other. An alternative embodiment presents a brake/spacer plate to preclude the diagonal chord from being positioned away from a desired extension away from the joint connector. The joint connectors allow the transverse and diagonal chords of the space frame to be secured off-site and/or in a ground-adjacent position which reduces the fabrication assembly and erection costs.

  • Patent number: 5221956
Abstract: A laser transmitting and receiving speed and/or range detection device has coaxial internal beam directing and receiving paths for the transmitted and received (reflected) laser energy. A sight is provided having an optical combiner which presents a projected display of the detected speed or range of a target that may be observed by the operator while aiming the device at the target. A telephoto effect is utilized in the projection of the display onto the sight such that the operator need not divert his head from the sight or refocus his eye to read the projected target speed or range.
