Abstract: An electronic camera free from failures of an internal circuit, such as a signal processing portion, caused by a drop in battery voltage when there remains a small amount of electric charge in the battery, includes a signal processing portion for signal-processing an imaged video signal obtained from an imaging element to form image data, a monitor for displaying the image data, an electronic flash device, a battery for supplying current to the signal processing portion, the monitor and the electronic flash device, a battery voltage detector circuit, and a system controller. The electronic flash device includes a capacitor charged when no light is emitted, and a discharged tube receiving an output from the capacitor and emitting light.
Abstract: An apparatus and methods for efficiently processing signal and image data are described. The invention provides a representation of signal and image data that can be used as a figure of merit to compare and characterize different signal processing techniques. The representation can be used as an intermediate result that is may be subjected to further processing, and/or may be used as a control element for processing operations. As a provider of an intermediate result, the invention can be used as a step in processes for the transduction, storage, enhancement, refinement, feature extraction, compression, coding, transmission, or display of image, audio and other data. The invention improves manipulation of data from intrinsically unpredictable, or partially random sources. The result is a concise coding of the data in a form permitting robust and efficient data processing, a reduction in storage demands, and restoration of original data with minimal error and degradation.

Abstract: A method and apparatus providing for the construction of customized advertisement banners for Web pages on a client computer. The advertisement banners are customized based upon various factors including user profile information, technographic information, geographic information, demographic information and user interaction information. The information being either stored on the user's computer, server computers or obtained from the user's interaction with the Web page containing the advertisement banner. Abstract: A method of and a device for output based objective speech quality assessment, wherein a degraded output speech signal comprising a speech information portion, is compared (5) with a reference signal retrieved from the output speech signal. The reference signal is provided by perceptual approximation of the speech information portion of the output speech signal using a speech recoder (2) producing a reference speech signal of finite bitrate. In a preferred embodiment, the speech recorder (2) is a speech codec.

Abstract: Telecommunications system, particularly for exchanging telecommunication traffic between fixed and mobile users, such as lorry drivers, by way of a satellite communication network, such as the Inmarsat system, built up from several telecommunication satellites which are operatively coupled, by way of radio transmission links, to one or more earth stations. The earth stations are operatively connected, by way of a service centre, to an earth communication network built up from fixed and/or mobile telecommunication networks, messages received from users by way of the satellite communication network being stored in electronic mailboxes at the service centre.
Abstract: A method is described for displaying data, wherein the data consists of a number of samples Nr that is much larger than the number of samples Ns that can be displayed on a display. According to the invention sets of Nc=Nr/Ns samples are formed and for each set Nc a single value xt is determined according to a specific algorithm by which important features as reflected by the samples, despite the reduction in samples, still can be displayed with a better SNR than with presently known methods.

Abstract: Method for installing a duct where an existing longitudinal member is present along a section over which the duct is to be installed. The longitudinal member is utilized as a guide for the duct. The tape-shaped element is closed around the longitudinal element through mating of complementary coupling devices longitudinally situated along the tape-shaped member so as to form a duct, with the coupled tape-shaped element then being propelled along the longitudinal element to extend the duct. The tape-shaped element can house an optical fiber cable. Through use of such a tape-shaped element, the duct, illustratively housing an optical fiber cable, can be formed around an existing (e.g. copper) telecommunications cable with any need to interrupt or remove that cable.

Abstract: According to an objective measurement technique for determining the quality of an output signal (X(t)) of an audio or voice signals-processing and/or -transporting system, the output signal and a reference signal (Y(t)) are mapped on representation signals (R(X), R(Y)) of a suitably chosen perception model. A differential signal (D(t)) of the representation signals is averaged, in a time-averaging device, in two steps by two averaging members connected in series, over time, whereby a quality signal Q is generated. The time averaging is carried out by the first and second averaging members at the local and the global levels, respectively, using various averaging functions, e.g., preferably Lebesgue paveraging functions having various p-values p1>p2. The invention advantageously provides a high correlation between a generated quality signal Q and the human quality perception, even in the event of brief disturbances.

Abstract: A spring mattress that uses a multiplicity of elastic springs, spatially distributed according to a predetermined pattern, with highly variable configurations, obtained by shaping through cutting and pouring operations on a starting slab of foam material of a proper thickness. The resulting configuration that is adopted determines incoming portions in the spring elements that affect one or more of its sides, with variable magnitudes and depths, and outcropping portions from one or more of its sides, with a thickness and projection range that are also variable. The springs that make up the mattress are integrated on their lower end to the remaining continuous laminar portion of the original slab, and in a second alternate version, can be joined on their other end to a continuous laminar slab to which they are bonded by means of adhesion or similar operation.
Abstract: A technique for implementing in a networked client-server environment, e.g., the Internet, network-distributed advertising in which advertisements are downloaded, from an advertising server to a browser executing at a client computer, in a manner transparent to a user situated at the browser, and subsequently displayed, by that browser on an interstitial basis, in response to a click-stream generated by the user to move from one web page to the next. Specifically, an HTML advertising tag is embedded into a referring web page. This tag contains two components. One component effectively downloads, from an distribution web server and to an extent necessary, and then persistently instantiates an agent at the client browser.

Abstract: Method and system for the planning and/or evaluation of radio networks, especially CDMA radio networks. The service area of a radio network is divided into pixels after which for each pixel a probability is determined whether it is covered by a cell of the radio network. To account for cell breathing due to traffic changes, the planning involves the calculation of a link budget for each pixel and of a noise rise for each cell.

Abstract: System for mobile telecommunication, comprising a first mobile network (KTm), connected to a first nonmobile network (KTv) having routing means (X). Terminals connected to the nonmobile network may set up a connection with mobile terminals having the first or a second mobile network as their home network. A mirror register (MLR), connected to the routing means in the nonmobile network, is used to record a copy of the user profile transferred by the HLR register of the home network of a roaming mobile terminal to the VLR register of the non-home network. The user profile stored in the mirror register in this manner is then used—together with the VLR—to directly drive the routing means X of the nonmobile network KTv, as a result of which the routing path is considerably shortened.
Abstract: A system for routing SMS-messages to a plurality of short message service centers, comprising: a first transceiver for sending and receiving SMS-messages over a fixed network; a router table for identifying from a recipient address of a SMS-message a short message service center that services the intended recipient of the SMS-message, said first transceiver cooperating with the router table in order to submit a received SMS-message to an identified short message service center servicing the intended recipient. The system further comprises a GSM-node comprising a second transceiver for sending and receiving SMS-messages to and from a GSM-network, said second transceiver connected to said first transceiver; wherein said first transceiver and said GSM-node are connected and wherein said first transceiver is adapted to submit a SMS-message to said GSM-node when the short message is of a predetermined format, so that the GSM-node forms a proxy connected to the GSM-network.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for identifying a device acting as a server on a network is disclosed which uses network data representing communications on the network. The network data contains source device, destination device, data transfer protocol and data volume information for each communication represented therein and may be collected by network traffic monitors or packet capture devices such as RMON2 probes on the network. Data relating to relevant server protocols is identified within the network data, and using the identified data, a device is determined to be acting as a server if it has the highest data volume for communications in which it is the source or destination device and which communications involve at least a threshold number of other devices. The method may be conveniently implemented in a computer program and may be used in conjunction with a network management application.
