  • Patent number: 6617522
Abstract: A connector, and an associated method, for connecting an electrical circuit component to a substrate, such as a printed circuit board. The connector is formed of one of more pin members formed of an electrically-conductive material which exhibits physical-memory characteristics. The pin member is initially configured into a memory configuration and thereafter reconfigured into an alternate reconfiguration. The alternate configuration is selected to facilitate mounting of the circuit component upon the substrate. Thereafter, the pin member is heated to beyond a deformation threshold temperature. When at such temperature, the pin member becomes reconfigured into the memory configuration. Through appropriate selection of the memory configuration, heating of the pin member causes connection of the circuit component with the substrate.

  • Patent number: 6600931
Abstract: A switch assembly, and an associated method, for a multi-mode mobile station operable to communicate pursuant to two or more communication services. Selected antenna transducers, or test ports, are selectably connected by way of the switch assembly to selected portions of the radio circuitry of the multi-mode mobile station. • Patent number: 6587685
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method for downloading operation parameters to a mobile station by way of a radio link. The operating parameters include, for instance, preferred roaming list, number assignment module, enhanced variable rate coder, IP address, access point setup parameters, and the like, to be used during operation of the mobile station. Values of the operational parameter are input by way of the user interface to a server coupled to the network infrastructure of the communication system in which the mobile station is operable. Values of the operational parameters are encoded and routed to the mobile station by way of the network infrastructure of the communication system and a radio link formed with the mobile station. Once detected at the mobile station, the values are stored at a storage element, and later retrieved during subsequent operation of the mobile station.

  • Patent number: 6580771
Abstract: A wireless receiver stores one or more frames of received data and, during an initial demodulation, resolves each individual path for the multipath channel and estimates (pilot) channel parameters in order to process the received traffic, then preferably decodes the processed traffic to produce an estimate of the transmitted data. The estimated data is re-encoded exactly as encoded by the transmitter, then scaled and time-shifted utilizing complex weights and timing estimates garnered during the initial demodulation process. For each resolvable path, all other paths are time-aligned to reproduce the interference detected in the original received signal, with the resulting information employed to cancel the interference from other paths. Once all paths have had interference from other paths canceled, the results are combined and again decoded, re-encoded and reprocessed iteratively until residual interference and/or decoding errors are eliminated.

  • Patent number: 6570909
Abstract: A system and method for canceling interference present in a code-division multiple access (CDMA) channel signal received at a CDMA receiver that is caused by multipath components of a transmitted pilot channel signal or by soft handoff conditions is computationally efficient because it operates at symbol rates. The channel signal from which such multipath interference is canceled can be either a traffic (data) channel or the pilot channel itself. Interference signals are produced in groups corresponding to the fingers of the CDMA rake receiver. The interference signals corresponding to each finger are used to cancel interference in the other fingers.

  • Patent number: 6480700
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for selectably reducing the current consumption of a communication device, such as a mobile station operable in a cellular communication system. Portions of the communication device operated at desired power levels but at reduced current consumption levels, thereby to reduce power consumption of the communication device. When the communication device powered by a portable power supply, the longevity of the portable power supply is increased, as lessened amounts of power are required to operate the communication device.

  • Patent number: 6480155
Abstract: An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a radio device, such as a mobile terminal operable in a cellular communication system. The antenna assembly includes an active antenna element and at least a parasitic element. The active antenna element is of a selected lengthwise dimension and is resonant, in isolation, at a first resonant frequency. The parasitic antenna element is positioned proximate to the active antenna element and separated therefrom by a selected separation distance. The selected separation distance is determinative of a reduction in frequency at which the active antenna element is resonant. Thereby, for a given length, the resonant frequency of the active antenna element is reduced, permitting the lengthwise dimensional requirements of the antenna transducer of which the active antenna element is formed to be reduced relative to conventional antenna transducers.

  • Patent number: 6466173
Abstract: An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a portable radio device, such as a mobile station. The antenna assembly includes a whip antenna transducer capable of translation between a retracted position and an extracted position. When positioned in the extracted position, a switch element interconnects the whip antenna transducer together with radio circuitry of the radio device. When positioned in a retracted position, the switch element, instead, connects the radio circuitry of the radio device to a non-movable antenna transducer, such as a patch or PIFA antenna transducer, housed within the housing of the radio device.

Abstract: An antenna assembly, and an associated method, for a radio device, such as a portable mobile station. The antenna assembly includes a TOPIFA (Top-Mounted Inverted F-Antenna) transducer coupled to a substrate, such as a printed circuit board. The dimensions of the substrate are selected such that the geometric mean of the widthwise and lengthwise dimensions thereof define a geometric mean which correspond to the resonant length at which the mobile station, or radio device, is to be operated.

  • Patent number: 6311154
Abstract: A speech coder and a method for speech coding wherein the speech signal is represented by an excitation signal applied to a synthesis filter. The speech is partitioned into frames and subframes. A classifier identifies which of several categories the speech frame belongs to, and a different coding method is applied to represent the excitation for each category. For some categories, one or more windows are identified for the frame where all or most of the excitation signal samples are assigned by a coding scheme. Performance is enhanced by coding the important segments of the excitation more accurately. The window locations are determined from a linear prediction residual by identifying peaks of the smoothed residual energy contour. The method adjusts the frame and subframe boundaries so that each window is located entirely within a modified subframe or frame.

  • Patent number: 6292474
Abstract: Apparatus, and an associated method, for radio receiver circuitry operable in multi-modes to receive signals generated during operation of a multiple number of radio communication systems. The receiver circuitry is divided into receive chain portions which are selectably utilized depending upon which of the multiple number of the radio communication systems in which communications are to be effectuated. Selected combinations of the receive chain portions are formed, depending upon which of the modes in which the receiver circuitry is to be operable. Different combinations of the receive chain portions permit sharing of receive chain portions thereby to reduce the required number of circuit elements to form the multi-mode receiver circuitry. In one implementation, the radio receiver circuitry forms the receive portion of a dual-band, tri-mode mobile station operable in a selected one of three different cellular communication systems.
