  • Patent number: 4599701
Abstract: A digital circuit is disclosed for computing the magnitude of a complex number employing piece-wise linear approximations to achieve precision without the need for iteration. An illustrative implementing circuit employs a first stage for converting the in-phase and quadrature signals to their absolute values. The resultant signals are applied to a selection circuit which selects the maximum and minimum values. The resultant signals are combined with coefficients selected as a function of the operating interval and the resultant products added to yield a signal related to the magnitude of the input complex number.

  • Patent number: 4597630
Abstract: A method and associated system for providing interference patterns generated from light, including visible, ultraviolet and infrared, carrying desired information comprises the steps of and associated apparatus for modulating a light beam emanating from a suitable source, in accordance with the desired data or information or signal, splitting the modulated light beam into a pair of component beams, both thereby derived from the modulated beam, reflecting the resultant split beams towards each other so as to interfere optically. Advantageously, beam splitting and reflection may be effected by an essentially integrated, transparent element. Also advantageously, a recording of such interference is made by a positioning photosensitive medium at the point or in the plane of interference.

  • Patent number: 4594311
Abstract: Catalytically imaged thermosetting and thermoplastic resin objects including printed circuit boards are provided. A hydrophilic, adhesion promoted insulating base material is treated in selected areas to produce metallic nuclei in the form of an image of a desired metal pattern. The image is exposed to an electroless metal bath to reinforce the image. Then, the non-imaged areas of the base are rendered hydrophobic by means of solvent treatment. The imaged areas are built up by metal deposition. Preferably, the solvent treatment of the non-imaged areas of the base material is repeated to enhance adhesion of the metal pattern to the base material.

  • Patent number: 4594369
Abstract: A process for producing corrosion inhibiting particles comprising binding corrosion inhibiting anions to particles of an inorganic oxide by ion-exchange to form anion-exchanged particles, the anions of which are releasible by further ion-exchange in which the inorganic oxide particles having surface hydroxyl groups are first contacted with an acidic solution containing labile anions at a pH sufficiently below 7 for the protons of the hydroxyl groups to be replaced by the labile anions and thereafter contacting the particles of the labile anion-exchanged inorganic oxide with a solution containing the required corrosion inhibiting anions so that the labile anions are replaced by the corrosion inhibiting anions. The labile anions are anions of water soluble, acid compounds which have a lower affinity for the oxide surface than the required corrosion inhibiting anions and which form a soluble salt with the cation of the compound providing the corrosion inhibiting anions.

  • Patent number: 4591987
Abstract: A system for determining range and orientation of distant objects such as a ship. By utilizing split imaging the observed height on a video monitor can be accurately determined despite movements of the image on the monitor. The observed ship can be visually identified and the true height determined from reference sources. A better comparison of data indicating the true height compared to observed height permits calculation of the range to the target ship. Split imaging can also be utilized to determine the observed length of the ship so that observed height and length data can be compared to the true height and length of the target ship to determine orientation of the target ship relative to the observer.
