Patent number: 8351125Abstract: A directional light distributing optical element includes a light incident surface and a light emission curved surface. The light incident surface receives a light emitted by a light source. The light emission curved surface and a first plane are intersected to form a first curve. The first curve has a plurality of first curve segments, and each first curve segment includes at least three first tangent points. After passing each first tangent point along a connecting line of the light source and each first tangent point, the light exits along a first axis, and an included angle formed between the first axis and an optic axis is greater than ?15° and smaller than 15°. Thus, the light after passing the directional light distributing optical element forms a one-dimensional directional light.Type: GrantFiled: February 2, 2011Date of Patent: January 8, 2013Assignee: Industrial Technology Research InstituteInventors: Hui-Hsiung Lin, Wen-Hsun Yang, Chin-Ju Hsu, Yu-Nan Pao

Patent number: 8344585Abstract: A method for converting heat to electricity is described. The method can be used to efficiently and economically generate electricity from thermal energy directly through ferroelectric or other polarizable materials without the need for first converting thermal energy to mechanical energy or to any other form of energy or work. The method can involve subjecting a polarizable material to a thermodynamic cycle having two isothermal steps and two steps that occur at constant polarization. In an ideal implementation, this thermodynamic cycle allows the conversion of heat to electricity at the ultimate Carnot limit. The ferroelectric material can be continuously cycled in and out of its ferroelectric phase while heat is continuously converted to electricity at high voltage. The electrical energy so generated can be used in a virtually unlimited range of different applications or be stored for later use. An apparatus for converting heat to electricity is also described.Type: GrantFiled: September 7, 2011Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: The Neothermal Energy CompanyInventors: Ahmet Erbil, David F. Patent number: 8344979Abstract: A method and an apparatus for over-driving a liquid crystal display (LCD) are provided, which are suitable for compensating a gray level brightness of the LCD. The method includes the following steps. Firstly, a data buffer unit outputs a current frame data. Then, the current frame data is stored into a frame memory unit, and the frame memory unit outputs a previous frame data. Next, several look-up tables (LUTs) are searched for a driving voltage in a corresponding LUT according to the current frame data and the previous frame data. Afterward, a position scanning unit receives the current frame data to determine a current position. Finally, a multiplexer outputs the corresponding driving voltage at the current position. Thus, a display panel has the same gray level brightness in upper, middle, and lower portions thereof, thereby avoiding ghosting.Type: GrantFiled: December 15, 2009Date of Patent: January 1, 2013Assignee: Chunghwa Picture Tubes., Ltd.Inventors: Mu-Shan Liao, Tung-Hsin Lan, Hung-Chun Li
