  • Patent number: 4205677
Abstract: A suction control system is provided for use by surgeons in recovering blood from a patient during the course of a surgical operation. A blood suction line extends from a pick-up tube, which is placed in the blood pool of the patient, to a cardiotomy reservoir. Attached to the blood suction line, but not communicating with it, is a vernier control valve to which two vacuum lines are connected and which valve is formed with a port and connecting passage between the two vacuum lines. One vacuum line is connected to a vacuum source while the other vacuum line connects to the cardiotomy reservoir. The valve is formed with an internal passage connecting the two vacuum lines and a port open to the atmosphere and communicating with the passage. The surgeon holds the valve unit in his hand with his thumb over the port.

  • Patent number: 4203035
Abstract: A computer controlled high resolution radiaoactivity distribution detection system is provided for sensing radioactive events in a biological specimen. The system includes a rotating disc memory which contains instructional data for controlling the computer. Radiation emitted from a subject positioned on programmable XY platform is directed through a collimator and is detected by means of an array of sensing devices and front end electronics. The detected radioactive events are temporarily held in a buffer memory under control of the computer for storage. The temporarily stored data is fed via the computer to a disc memory for long term storage, a disc controller constitutes an interface to the disc memory. The stored data is then applied to a display via computer for presentation.

  • Patent number: 4201613
Abstract: A pressure sensitive adhesive coating is applied to selected regions of one face of a release web, other regions of the one face being free of the adhesive coating. A photographic print is superposed on the release web face having the adhesive and the adhesive free regions, the back surface of the print contacting the adhesive coating. The release web is slit along a line that extends the length of the print and passes over the adhesive free regions. The slit forms a pair of tabs in the release web at the adhesive free regions. The tabs facilitate removal of the release web without bending of the photographic print.

  • Patent number: 4198540
Abstract: The signal from the crossover network of an audio output circuit is applied to certain of the audio system's low, middle and high frequency speakers through particular compensation circuits that are associated with the crossover network and the speaker driver coils. These compensation networks include: a resistor-inductor-capacitor sequence of selected values connected across the terminals of a high frequency or other driver whose resonant impedance peak must be compensated to a resistive impedance for optimum crossover; a resistor-capacitor sequence of selected values connected across the terminals of a low frequency or other driver whose inductance must be compensated to a resistive impedance for optimum crossover; and a variable inductor connected in series with one or more of the terminals of any driver where a "roll off" at higher frequency may be desired. The result is more faithful audio reproduction.

  • Patent number: 4190988
Abstract: Wooden gutters are protected against the weather and their useful life extended by applying a flexible plastic liner along the trough of the gutter and closing the ends thereof with sealing caps. The liners and caps are tightly secured in place to prevent water from seeping in-between the liner and the wood gutter. The liner is of extruded, flexible plastic material contoured to fit snuggly within the gutter trough and is readily cut to a length corresponding to the length of the gutter. The end caps may be made of injection molded plastic parts formed with cooperating grooves to receive the ends of the liner, and connectors are provided to join adjacent sections of liners. Other components include corner joints, drain connectors and lifters to provide a pitch to the liner to ensure drainage.

  • Patent number: 4186377
Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring tire pressure for motor vehicles, or the like, in which coded sound signals emitted from a wheel-mounted sound signal generator are detected and processed. The coded signal from the generator serves to distinguish the sound signal from background noise. The output of the generator is comprised of at least two coherent frequencies that beat acoustically with one another to produce an amplitude modulated sound signal that is then detected by a transducer which converts the sound signals into the electrical signals. The electrical signals are then fed through the processing circuitry including a detector which extracts the modulation envelope and applies it to an audio band-pass filter. The filter accepts the envelope within a predetermined frequency range, eliminating all signals which are not within the designed band pass. A second detector converts the audio signal to a DC level and feeds it to a threshold comparator.

  • Patent number: 4179324
Abstract: A semiconductor thin film and glass stratum laminate is formed by depositing a semiconductor thin film onto a temporary substrate having a carbon coating to which the film adheres. Processing of the semiconductor thin film for selected performance characteristics is accomplished while the film is affixed to the temporary substrate. The processed thin film is transferred and electrostatically bonded to the glass stratum by exposure to a thermal environment at or below the softening point of the glass stratum and by application of an electric potential across the thin film and glass. The bonded thin film and glass stratum laminate is separated from the temporary substrate.

  • Patent number: 4174847
Abstract: A precision centering device with a pair of relatively movable plates forming a guideway for four relatively movable guides. A tapered centering port having a rectangular profile is formed by the guides which are constrained for mutual coacting movement by the plates. The relative positions of the movable plates define the geometric shape of the centering port and the relative locations of the guides determine the size of the centering port. A reciprocating collet configured to carry a semiconductor chip is received within the centering port at the center thereof. As the collet moves downwardly, the chip is guided through the tapered port and is centered on the collet.

  • Patent number: 4171608
Abstract: A safety attachment is provided for use with a rotary lawn mower to prevent substantial injury to anyone whose extremity may accidentally strike the cutter. The attachment includes a relatively large annular disc mounted to the drive shaft of the motor for rotation about a vertical axis and at least one cutter bar mounted diametrically across the disc on the underside thereof. The disc diameter is substantially equal to the length of the cutter bar. In one embodiment slots are provided adjacent to the leading edges of the cutter bar and impellers are provided on the upper side of the disc adjacent the slot fordischarging cut grass through the side of the machine. The combination of the disc and the cutter bar provides good grass cutting action and at the same time greatly reduces the risk of serious injury in the event that one's foot, for example, accidentally slips in under the mower.

  • Patent number: 4167110
Abstract: Testing of rheological properties of a fluid is performed between a pair of members having cooperating faces, each characterized by minute, randomly interspersed land portions and cavity portions. The land portions of each face are planar and are disposed geometrically in a common plane. The cavity portions are irregular and are disposed in a network subordinate to the common plane. Testing involves the steps of placing a sample of the fluid between the cooperating faces, pressing the cooperating faces into flush contact with each other, and pulling the cooperating faces from each other. The force required for rupture of the fluid within itself, without first breaking its contact with the cooperating faces, is a function of the shear stress, yield point and other rheological properties of the fluid.
