Abstract: Stable aqueous fabric softening compositions based on water-dispersible cationic fabric softeners such as the di-long chain, di-short chain quaternary ammonium salts are provided using synergistic proportions of fatty alcohols to enhance the softening performance. Both concentrated and ready-for-use formulations can be prepared. The active ingredients concentration in the concentrated formula is generally in the range of 11 to 20% by weight while for the ready-for-use formulations, concentration of the active ingredients may range from about 3 to about 8% by weight. In either case, the weight ratio of cationic softening agent to fatty alcohol being in the range of from about 6:1 to 2.8:1. These compositions have low viscosity and are easily dispersible in cold water and are storage stable. Water soluble electrolytes can further reduce viscosity and ethoxylated amines can further increase stability. Methods for making the compositions are also disclosed.

Distilled (deionized) water is preferred in the formulation to prevent minimal contamination.
Abstract: The physical stability of aqueous liquid gel-like compositions based on montmorillonite, attapulgite, hectorite or other inorganic colloid-forming clay or other thixotropic thickener is greatly improved by incorporating in the composition small amounts, such as 0.1 to 0.2 weight percent of an alkali metal fatty acid salt stabilizer. The aqueous compositions containing inorganic builder salts and other functional inorganic salts, chlorine bleach, bleach-stable detergent, thixotropic thickener and an alkali metal fatty acid salt as a physical stabilizer exhibit a significant increase in apparent viscosity and remain stable against phase separation for an extended period of time. The thixotropic properties can be retained or improved using smaller levels of the clay thixotropic thickener than in the absence of the physical stabilizer. Use as liquid gel-like automatic dishwasher compositions are described.
Abstract: A process for the manufacture of water soluble higher fatty monoglyceride monosulfate detergents is described which includes reacting a sulfating agent, such as chlorosulfuric acid, with glycerol dissolved in an organic solvent, such as chloroform, to trisulfate the glycerol, reacting the glycerol trisulfuric acid made with a higher fatty acid or a higher fatty acid methyl ester in such a solvent, extracting the reaction mixture with a solvent for the monoglyceride disulfuric acid, such as aqueous lower alkanol, and neutralizing the extracted monoglyceride disulfuric acid with an aqueous neutralizing agent to make the water soluble detergent salt. Among preferable detergent salts made are sodium hydrogenated coco fatty monoglyceride sulfate, sodium hydrogenated palm kernel fatty monoglyceride sulfate, sodium hydrogenated palm fatty monoglyceride sulfate, sodium hydrogenated tallow fatty monoglyceride sulfate, and mixtures of two or more thereof.

Abstract: A fabric softening detergent composition includes, as essential components thereof, nonionic detergent, builder for the nonionic detergent, fabric softening cationic compound and silicone glycol copolymer. The silicone glycol copolymer is one that has an HLB number in the range of 4 to 7, due to the presence in the molecule of a polyethoxy polypropoxy chain, and said copolymer surprisingly improves the fabric softening capability of the cationic compound. The nonionic detergent may be either a broad range ethoxylate (BRE) or a narrow range ethoxylate (NRE) and the builder may be of a phosphate or non-phosphate type, but non-phosphate detergent compositions based on NRE nonionic detergents are preferred. In a preferred embodiment of the invention a fabric softening detersive article, the fabric softening detergent composition, in particulate form, is present in pre-measured amount in a permeable fabric pouch.
Abstract: A fabric softening and detersive article, preferably in the form of a flexible non-woven fabric pouch, is permeable to passage of a contained fabric softening detergent composition into wash water in an automatic washing machine. The presence of a relatively minor proportion of anionic surfactant in the fabric softening detergent composition (which also contains nonionic detergent, cationic fabric softener and builder for the nonionic detergent) promotes passage of all or substantially all of the fabric softening detergent composition and its components through the pouch walls so that little or no residue remains therein after completion of the washing operation even when the wash water is cold, e.g., about 20.degree. C. Thus, efficiencies of washing and fabric softening are improved and no objectionable residue is left in the pouch, which could otherwise lead to consumer rejection of such a product.
