  • Patent number: 7268638
Abstract: The invention is a method for pulse position modulating signals which are synchronized to clocked bit periods using a clock comprising the steps of generating two, three or n signals to mark the presence of digital ones during corresponding n time slots occurring during the same bit period. The two, three or n signals are combined into a single data channel to utilize abrupt phase changes of pulses in a carrier signal at a carrier frequency, the phase changes having a very short duration to mark the presence of digital ones only. The combination of the n signals into a single data channel comprises gating each of the n signals in a sequence of serially delayed time slots corresponding to each of the n signals during a portion of the same bit period in the single data channel during time positions reserved for unexpressed zeroes.

  • Patent number: 7263229
Abstract: A system that detects the location as well as the luminance transition range of slant image edge in a digital image. The variance value of the pixels inside a rectangular image window centered with a current pixel is checked to determine if the current pixel is in an edge region or a in non-edge region. If the current pixel is in a non-edge region, no further checking is performed. Otherwise, it is determined if the current pixel is a center pixel in a luminance transition range of a slant edge. The values of the current pixel and its neighboring pixels inside the rectangular window are used to determine if the selected pixel is the center pixel in a luminance transition range of a slant edge. If it is, then the exact length of the luminance transition range of the slant edge is determined. Through such a detection process, both the center position and the luminance transition range of slant image edge can be determined.

  • Patent number: 7260593
Abstract: A rank-determining device determines the rank of a particular sample value from a set of digital sample values by utilizing two different thresholders that are implemented by comparators. The rank of the sample value is decomposed by thresholding the sample value with all of the sample values in the set of digital sample values, and in this manner eliminates the necessity of a sorting operation. This decomposition of the rank will is referred to as self-threshold decomposition. A plurality of these rank-determining devices can be combined to form a rank determining apparatus in order to find the rank of each one of the digital samples in the set of digital samples. Because the rank-determining apparatus implements self-threshold decomposition, rank- and order-statistic based filters, such as the median filter, can be realized in a feasible manner.

  • Patent number: 7260272
Abstract: An improved noise reduction process by wavelet thresholding utilizes a discrete wavelet transform to decompose the image into different resolution levels. A thresholding function is then applied in different resolution levels with different threshold values to eliminate insignificant wavelet coefficients which mainly correspond to the noise in the original image. Finally, an inverse discrete wavelet transform is applied to generate the noise-reduced video image. The threshold values are based on the relationships between the noise standard deviations of different decomposition levels in the wavelet domain and the noise standard deviation of the original image.

  • Patent number: 7256894
Abstract: The invention is an apparatus and method for second harmonic optical coherence tomography of a sample comprising a laser coupled to an interferometer which has a reference arm and in a sample arm. A nonlinear crystal in the reference arm generates a second harmonic reference signal. The sample typically backscatters some second harmonic light into the sample arm. A broadband beam splitter optically coupled to the reference arm and sample arm combines the signals from the reference arm and sample arm into interference fringes and a dichroic beam splitter splits the interference fringes into a fundamental and second harmonic interference signal. A detector is optically coupled to the dichroic beam splitter detects interference fringes from which both an OCT and second harmonic OCT image can be constructed using a conventional data processor.

  • Patent number: 7252764
Abstract: The invention is a method for fabricating molecular filters which can separate objects approximately 1-5 nm in range, where the filtration size is controlled by using thin films of materials and technologies to form a filtration channel or pore in a middle thin film layer in a multilayered structure. Lithography is used to define two offset arrays of blind holes into the opposing sides of a multi-layer membrane. The blind holes extend across a thin central filtration layer. A selective etch is used to attack the filtration layer to form a communicating channel between the two holes. The only connection between one side of the filter and the other is through the channel in the filter layer, whose thickness, d, determines the largest size object which can traverse the filter.

  • Patent number: 7246917
Abstract: An LED having a predetermined direction of radiation is combined with a first and second reflector. The first reflector opposes the LED and has a predetermined direction of reflection. The direction of reflection of the first reflector opposes the direction of radiation of the LED. The second reflector has a predetermined azimuthal direction of reflection. The second reflector positioned relative to the first reflector to receive light from the first reflector and redirect the light into the azimuthal direction of reflection. The LED, first and second reflectors collectively comprise an illumination unit. A plurality of illumination units are axially stacked. In one embodiment of the stack, at least one illumination unit comprises an LED and second reflector of one illumination unit and a first reflector of an adjacent illumination unit in the stack of illumination units.
