  • Patent number: 8301352
Abstract: A cubic metric calculator performs a calculation of a time average of power of the amplitude of a transmission signal when a cubic metric value is calculated as a product-sum operation between a transmission power-dependent term including an amplitude value depending on the transmission power of a transmission signal and a time average term including only a modulation parameter not depending on the transmission power of the transmission signal. When the transmission signal is transmitted, the operator inputs the amplitude value to calculate the transmission power-dependent term, reads the value of the time average term from coefficient memory, and performs the product-sum operation using an operation result of the transmission power-dependent term and the read value of the time average term, thereby calculating a time average of the power of the amplitude of the transmission signal.

  • Patent number: 8289899
Abstract: A communication method for use in a radio communications system in which a mobile station sends identical data to a plurality of radio base stations in a parallel fashion. The method determines which radio base stations should stop forwarding data to an intermediate network device managing them. The intermediate network device includes a monitor and a controller. The monitor checks continuity of sequence numbers affixed to data received from each radio base station, thereby detecting missing sequence numbers. Based on the statistics of missing sequence numbers, the controller selects which radio base station should be allowed to continue its data forwarding operation. The controller then requests the other, non-selected radio base stations to stop their data forwarding operation.

  • Patent number: 8285639
Abstract: An improved location based authentication (LBA) system for detecting fraudulent transactions committed by means of misuse of payment cards is disclosed. The improved LBA system performs a series of transaction analysis and generates a fraud-score which provides an indication as whether to authorize an attempted transaction. The system is designed to increase profitability of credit card companies by reducing the accumulated losses due to fraud. In one embodiment, the system detects fraud by analyzing the behavior patterns of card holders and merchants.

  • Patent number: 8284223
Abstract: A thermal printing mechanism includes a head unit having a heating element; an energizing unit that energizes the heating element; and an energizing control unit that controls the energizing unit to energize the heating element for a total energization time set according to a color density of a pixel so that the higher the color density is, the longer the total energization time becomes. The energizing control unit divides the total time period into energization time units, based on printing speed; specifies energization time units for energization so that a sum thereof is equivalent to the total energization time; and performs control so that if the printing speed is lower than a first printing speed, the energization time units appear continuous, and if the printing speed is equal to or higher than the first printing speed, the energization time units do not appear continuous.

  • Patent number: 8277577
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for obtaining a surface of a titanium-based metal implant intended to be inserted into bone tissue, comprising: (a) projecting particles of aluminum oxide under pressure on the external area of the implant; (b) chemically treating the sandblasted external area of the implant with an acid composition comprising sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid; and (c) thermally treating the sandblasted external area of the implant by heating at a temperature of 200-450° C. for 15-120 min. The invention likewise defines a metal implant having said surface. The surface thus obtained has good micrometer-scale roughness with a suitable morphology, as well as a composition which is virtually free of impurities and a thickness which is approximately three times the thickness of conventional surfaces, which characteristics provide it with very good osseointegration properties.

  • Patent number: 8280063
Abstract: In public audio presentation it is desirable that the playback loudness is continuously adapted to the background noise loudness. Such adaptation of the playback volume requires a continuous measurement of the loudness somewhere within the sound exposure area. A dipole loudspeaker panel has a strong attenuation of the emitted sound in the panel plane. When placing a microphone capsule in that plane but outside the panel, the sound emitted from the panel will be recorded by the microphone with a significant sound pressure level attenuation. Such specific microphone arrangement can capture the background noise without being unduly disturbed by the direct sound emitted from the loudspeakers.

  • Patent number: 8279506
Abstract: A reflection type collinear holographic storage system is described, in which an improved overlap between an object beam and a reference beam is achieved. The collinear holographic storage system has a spatial light modulator for imprinting a data page on an object beam, which is located in the beam path of a portion of a reference beam transmitted through a holographic storage medium, whereby the object beam is generated by imprinting a data page onto the transmitted reference beam. The diameter of the reference beam inside the holographic storage medium is matched to the diameter of the object beam.

  • Patent number: 8281137
Abstract: Many watermarking systems make use of correlation for calculating a detection metric, which means that several reference patterns are generated at encoder side and one or more of them are embedded inside the content signal, dependent on the message to be embedded. To decode the embedded message, it is necessary to discover which reference pattern was embedded at encoder side by correlating the known reference patterns with the content signal. In the case where watermarked audio is emitted by a loudspeaker and then captured with a microphone, the received signal echoes are used for watermark detection instead of treating them as noise by integrating the correlation values resulting from echoes into the main correlation peak, thereby using correlation result amplitude values located within a predetermined neighborhood of a correlation result peak amplitude value and exceeding a predetermined threshold.
