  • Patent number: 4484713
Abstract: The thread reeling apparatus includes a rotary cam drum with a traversing thread guide assembly used to guide a thread from a delivery mechanism to a bobbin or thread package. A roller having a smooth, peripheral surface is interposed at a location downstream of the rotary cam drum along which the traversing thread guide assembly moves back and forth. A further traversing thread guide assembly located downstream of the smooth roller receives the thread from the smooth roller and transfers the same on to a bobbin or thread package driven by a friction roller. The disposition of the smooth roller and further traversing thread guide assembly controls the tension of the thread along the thread path.

  • Patent number: 4478164
Abstract: A wind-propelled craft is disclosed which comprises a hull supporting a pair of unstayed masts arranged to pivot about an axis lying in an approximately horizontal plane between a first position, in which one mast extends substantially vertically and the other extends generally at right-angles thereto away from the hull, and a second position, in which the relative configuration of the masts is reversed, each mast, in use, having a sail attached thereto or incorporating an aerofoil, whereby in use one sail or aerofoil can be trimmed to the wind to provide forward propulsion while the other sail or aerofoil simultaneously provides upward lift tending to counteract rolling or heeling force applied to the hull by wind impinging on the first sail or aerofoil. A steering control system is also described in which a steering link passes from a control point through the region of the pivot point of a mast to a rudder.

  • Patent number: 4468423
Abstract: An insulating cell element comprises a hermetically sealed shell defining a closed chamber having a volumetric space contained by the chamber wall. The space has a vacuum established in an amount sufficient to achieve a heat conductivity of substantially zero through the space. The shell has a structural configuration effective to resist the outside pressure resulting when the vacuum is established in the closed chamber and is further effective to maintain the vacuum over a substantially unlimited period of time. The energy transfer for a single layer of these elements is down to at least about 0.050 BTU per square foot per degree Fahrenheit (.degree.F.) at an overall thickness of about 1/8 of an inch. A plurality of the insulating cell elements are contiguously disposed with respect to each other to form a monolithic structure.

  • Patent number: 4463587
Abstract: The article handling assembly includes a lifting beam having a support with a plurality of workpiece grasping members. The support is moved inwardly and outwardly with respect to the work stations of the forging press. A spraying mechanism is also provided to move inwardly and outwardly with respect to the work stations of the forging press. A control mechanism operates the movement of the lifting beam having the workpiece grasping members effecting movement from one work station to the next. The movement is effected along the length of the forging press work stations outside of the area of the work stations. The movement of the spraying mechanism into and out of the work stations is synchronized with the movement of the workpiece grasping members moving into and out of the work stations to initially grasp workpieces and then to release the workpieces in the next work station. These operations are effectuated while the forging press is in an open position.

  • Patent number: 4455086
Abstract: Test apparatus and method for testing for faults in, for example, transparent sheet material in which two parallel beams of light separated by a distance "w" are passed through a grating having, for example, light transmitting and absorbing areas separated by a distance "w", so that as the two beams are scanned across the object and the grating the light output through the grating is generally constant. If, however, there are faults which displace one beam with respect to the other, then the spacing between the beams will change so the light output will vary from the norm. Furthermore, if there is a fault which would cause attenuation of the two beams, then the light output will again vary from the norm.

  • Patent number: 4434958
Abstract: The invention concerns a spheroid container flattened at either pole. The structure is made from gores assembled along their edges. Meridional mono-directional reinforcements are fixed at intervals to the connecting lines of the gores. The gores are made of a material with a low elastic modulus and a high capacity for plastic elongation and the meridional reinforcements from a material with a high elastic modulus. An overpressure inside the structure causes it to take on the shape of a lobed spheroid, flattened at either pole. Application for closed balloons and pressurized containers.
