  • Patent number: 4853514
Abstract: Apparatus and method employ beamed radiation to perform controlled deposition of matter onto a substrate. The apparatus generates an intense electron beam or a laser beam directed through a reaction chamber against the surface of a workpiece supported within such chamber while matter in the form of a solid rod, solid particles or molecules of a gas or vapor is controllably fed into the beam. The beam melts solid material in rod or wire form to produce fine droplets or vapor directed along the beam to the surface of the workpiece intersected by the beam and deposited thereon. Alternatively, the radiation of the beam may intersect a gaseous or vaporous form of the matter to be deposited. The beam effects both the heating of the workpiece and the deposition of the matter or a portion thereof onto a select portion of the workpiece surface intersected by the beam.

  • Patent number: 4838935
Abstract: Tungsten-titanium sputtering targets with improved characteristics are made from high-purity tungsten powder and a second powder consisting of high-purity titanium hydride powder or high-purity titanium hydride powder and high-purity titanium powder. The second powder contains at least 5%, preferably 25% to 100% by weight of titanium hydride powder. A powder mixture having a binodal particle size distribution with respect to the tungsten and second powders is placed under a containment pressure in a die. The die is heated in a vacuum hot-press chamber to a temperature sufficient to dehydride the titanium hydride, and to remove gases and alkali metals. The die is then heated to a second temperature in the range of 1350.degree. to 1550.degree. C. while maintaining the containment pressure and vacuum. A compaction force in the range of 2000 to 5000 psi is then applied to form a compact. The compaction force and vacuum are subsequently released and the compact is cooled.

  • Patent number: 4831230
Abstract: An apparatus and method for shaping and surface finishing articles and material of manufacture by means of intense radiation. In one form intense radiation, such as generated by an electron beam or beam of coherent light energy generated by a laser is controlled and caused to scan a portion of the surface of an article in such a manner as to selectively erode or vaporize material from the surface stratum of the article to shape or finish the surface thereof. In another form, the beam energy is employed to melt a portion of the surface stratum in a scanning operation wherein the melted material cools and solidifies into a layer having improved physical characteristics. In a modified form, such melted material is caused to flow and vary the shape of the article.

  • Patent number: 4817039
Abstract: The assembly performs the method for monitoring and predicting gaseous pollutant cloud drift and dispersion across complex terrain resulting from the site a source or potential source of pollution. Cloud drift and dispersion simulation information is produced for the earth surface terrain site under a wide range of simulated atmospheric conditions. The cloud drift and dispersion simulation information is then recorded and stored for later retrieval. The prevailing environmental conditions are monitored at the actual terrain site. As the time for the formation of a cloud of material such as an exhaust plume of a flight vehicle or movement of toxic gas is anticipated, information is selected from the recorded drift and dispersion simulation information in response to the preselected environmental conditions monitored at the actual terrain site.

  • Patent number: 4804460
Abstract: In the froth flotation of ore in a column, the froth/pulp interface level and the efficiency of the froth washing operation are controlled by determining a profile of temperatures measured in the froth layer and slurry below the interface. Temperatures are measured with temperature sensing elements immersed in the froth layer and extending to below the interface level. The measured profile is compared with a target profile and deviations are corrected by changing the tailings flowrate or the washwater flowrate to return a measured profile to the target profile. An inflection point in the profile occurs at the interface level. The inflection point in a measured profile is compared with a level set point, and a deviation from set point value is corrected by increasing or decreasing the flow of tailings whereby the interface level returns to its set point.

  • Patent number: 4787565
Abstract: A method and assembly are for forming a thread reserve when winding a thread onto spool tube in a thread winding apparatus having a spool pin, a pressure roller and reverse thread roller device. The spool tube is carried by the spool pin and rotatably driven by a motor. The spool tube is capable of being swung in a direction toward the pressure roller. The spool tube has a smooth peripheral surface at least in the area of the thread reserve winding. A thread blocking device is disposed at an entry end of the pressure roller and holds back the thread from being introduced to the reverse thread roller device until the thread reserve winding has been wound onto the spool tube. A thread directing mechanism moves an incoming thread back-and-forth over a length of the spool tube defining the breadth of the thread reserve winding being formed. The thread directing mechanism is located ahead of the spool tube when viewing the assembly in the direction of the course of the thread through the thread winding apparatus.

  • Patent number: 4783893
Abstract: The method for removing a head portion with a shank section from a shaft of a golf club is effected by an assembly comprising securing means for fixing the position of a shaft of the golf club along the longitudinal axis of the shaft. Head grasping mechanism is mounted to rotate with respect to the securing mechanism and the longitudinal axis of the shaft secured in a fixed position. The head grasping mechanism is effective to hold the head during rotation thereof, thereby turning the head about an axis of rotation. Drive mechanism rotates the head grasping mechanism about the axis of rotation while applying pressure to the head in a directon parallel to the longitudinal axis and away from the fixed shaft. The method includes the step of heating the outer surface of the hosel section of the head portion for expanding the material therein with respect to the shaft. After the heating step, the pressure is applied to the head while the head portion is still heated.

  • Patent number: 4780942
Abstract: A hand tool for pulling a fuel injector outwardly from a seated location in an engine. The tool comprises an elongated shaft portion having a handle at one end thereof, a gripping section at the other end thereof and a push support means located at an intermediate point between the handle and the gripping section. The handle has a size and shape to facilitate the hand gripping thereof. The gripping section includes a reaching portion extending outwardly from the end of the shaft portion and a part-engaging portion extending away from a distal end of the reaching portion. The push support means extends outwardly from the shaft portion to provide a fulcrum pivot point about which the handle and gripping section pivot. The part-engaging portion is shaped to grasp the part to be pulled outwardly from the seated location when a force is applied to the handle in a direction to cause relative movement of the part-engaging portion with respect to the fulcrum pivot point.

  • Patent number: 4770698
Abstract: Lead with a low alpha particle emission is produced by selecting an orebody wherein lead mineral is present in a coarsely disseminated form and substantially free of impurities. The ore is selected from a host rock that is relatively low in alpha emitters, such as a carbonate rock. The ore is mined and is milled such that the lead mineral can be separated from the host rock and any other minerals. The ground ore may be screened into one or more fractions having a narrow range of particle sizes. Each fraction is formed into a fluid suspension, and each suspension is subjected to gravity separation to remove the host rock and any other minerals which substantially contain the alpha particle-emitting substances, and to recover the lead mineral as a concentrate with a low alpha count. The lead concentrate is subjected to a suitable smelting operation, without the introduction of alpha emitters for the recovery of a low alpha lead.
