  • Patent number: 6406816
Abstract: A multi-phase polymeric gel electrolyte for use in a rechargeable lithium battery has an ion-conductivity of more than 1 mS/cm and comprises a continuous ion-conductive liquid phase interpenetrating a solid phase. The solid phase which is obtained by polymerizing alkane monomers has a microscopic network structure which is selected such that when the electrolyte is employed in a rechargeable lithium metal battery, the battery is capable of being fully charged and discharged at a 0.2 C rate more than 20 times without short-circuiting due to dendritic growth. Suitable microscopic network structures are obtained using polydecandioldiacrylates. A method of preparing said electrolytes involves polymerizing a one-phase polymerizable composition which undergoes 1a phase separation during polymerization.

  • Patent number: 6356856
Abstract: A system for measuring the speed of a person while running or walking along a surface. A single acceleration sensor measures the acceleration in the forward direction and provides an acceleration signal which is amplified and subsequently sampled by analog to digital converter. The digital signal is processed by a microprocessor which executes an algorithm that determines the stride length and the stride duration from the digitized acceleration signal and calculates the speed and the distance traversed. The information thus obtained is transmitted by means of a radio frequency transmitter and received by a radio frequency receiver in a watch or other device which comprises a display which can be viewed by the runner or walker. The speed and distance traversed is displayed on the display, along with other useful information, such as average speed, maximum speed, total distance traversed, calories expended, and heart beat.

  • Patent number: 6354005
Abstract: A shaving apparatus has a housing (1), a shaving head (2) and a hair-collecting chamber (3) for collecting hair cuttings, the shaving head comprising a holder (4) which is connected to the housing by means of a hinge construction (15). The holder comprises an external cutting member (6) and an internal cutting member (8). For driving the internal cutting member a drive member (11) of a drive unit (10) can be coupled to the internal cutting member (8). For cleaning the hair-collecting chamber (3) the chamber is opened by pivoting the holder (4) and after the cleaning process the holder is pivoted back onto the housing. During opening and closing of the hair-collecting chamber the drive member (11) and the internal cutting member (8) are coupled and uncoupled. In order to improve coupling and uncoupling the hinge construction is such that in a first stage of the movement of the holder the holder is moved substantially in a longitudinal direction (14) of the drive member (11).

  • Patent number: 6337790
Abstract: The present invention provides a new type of thin-film capacitor which is insensitive to breakdown voltages during its mounting on a printed circuit board. Said capacitor has an insulating substrate having at least two internal electrode layers which are mutually separated by means of a dielectric layer. The substrate also has two end contacts each of which are electroconductively connected to one of said internal electrode layers. According to the invention, the capacitor also has breakable electrically conductive means, preferably formed as a metal layer, which means are electrically connected to said end contacts. The presence of said breakable electrically conductive means between said end contacts prevents damage due to electrical storage which can arise during the mounting of the capacitor on a printed circuit board.

  • Patent number: 6329992
Abstract: Generation of a granular graphic pattern on a physical surface is based on the multiple usage of elementary shapes. In particular, the method uses computer graphics in a multilevel pattern generation. It features defining at least two different absolute and/or relative transformation specifiers that are non-uniform amongst the elementary shapes with respect to either neighbouring ones of said elementary shapes and/or with respect to an overall geometry of the elementary shape in question.
