Patent number: 6202444Abstract: A method of providing an encodable layer on a glass object and on the resultant product. Said layer is formed by providing a paste containing glass frit, pigment and a binder, on the hot glass. As a result, the glass frit melts, causing the pigment to adhere to the glass object. The binder, which is used to render the paste spreadable, disappears from the mixture.Type: GrantFiled: January 7, 2000Date of Patent: March 20, 2001Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Raymond J. Patent number: 6201682Abstract: A thin-film component, for example a capacitor, a resistor and a coil, as well as combinations thereof. A substrate of an electrically insulating material (preferably glass), is provided with two U-shaped side contacts and with an electrical structure which is electrically connected to both side contacts. A flexible layer (preferably polyimide) is situated between the substrate and at least one of both legs of each of the U-shaped side contacts, which flexible layer is provided directly on the substrate surface, and in that the modules of elasticity of the material of the layer is below 50 GPa. By virtue of this measure, it is achieved that the components demonstrate a better resistance to standard bending tests. As a result, the product-failure percentage is reduced if these components are employed in flexible PCBs or in PCBs which are subjected to a vibration.Type: GrantFiled: December 16, 1998Date of Patent: March 13, 2001Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Jan H. Patent number: 6159573Abstract: A description is given of a rewritable optical information medium having an IPIAIM stack comprising a phase-change recording layer sandwiched between two dielectric layers, a light-absorbing layer of a material like Si, Ge, Mo, or W, a third dielectric layer, and a metal mirror layer. The light-absorbing layer reduces the difference in light absorption between the amorphous state and the crystalline state to a minimum, thus reducing the recording mark distortion. The presence of the light-absorbing layer in this position ensures that the optical phase difference between the amorphous and the crystalline state is almost zero, making the medium suitable for land-groove recording.Type: GrantFiled: June 14, 1999Date of Patent: December 12, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventor: Guo-Fu Zhou

Patent number: 6153254Abstract: A method and a device for manufacturing an electroluminescent display, by means of which a first pattern of electrodes (2) is provided on a flat surface (1) on which a layer of organic electroluminescent material (7) is subsequently deposited. A mask (10) with strips of mask material (11) is formed on a separate support (14), the strips being separated from each other by spaces (12) which correspond to a second pattern of electrodes (8). Subsequently, said mask is transferred to the layer of electroluminescent material in a dry manner by pressing the support onto the substrate. After transferring the mask (10), a second electrode material (13) is deposited, the electrodes of the second pattern being formed in the spaces in the mask. The layer of electroluminescent material (7) may be deposited by vapor deposition, spin-coating or screen-printing.Type: GrantFiled: February 10, 1999Date of Patent: November 28, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Edward W. Patent number: 6150757Abstract: A luminescent material coated with a crystalline layer of a metal oxide M.sub.2 O.sub.3 wherein a metal M is chosen from the group formed by Y and Al is shown. According to this method the luminescent material is first introduced into a solution of a salt of the metal M, then a compound of the metal M is deposited on the luminescent material through homogeneous precipitation, and subsequently the luminescent material is separated from the solution, dried, and heated. It is achieved thereby that the luminescent material will absorb mercury to a low degree only, and that accordingly the color point of a low-pressure mercury discharge lamp whose luminescent layer comprises a luminescent material coated in accordance with the invention only shows a small shift as the lamp ages.Type: GrantFiled: June 19, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Cornelis R. Patent number: 6128177Abstract: A capacitor comprises a number of ceramic layers on the basis of barium titanate as well as a number of electrode layers of palladium or a silver-palladium alloy, the ceramic layers and the electrode layers being alternately stacked to form a multilayer, which is also provided with two external electric connections which are in contact with a number of said electrode layers. In accordance with the invention, the electrode layers contain copper oxide, preferably 0.5-15 wt. %, calculated with respect to the overall quantity of palladium, silver and copper oxide. It has been found that the presence of a relatively small, yet effective quantity of copper oxide in the electrode material of Pd or Pd--Ag leads to a considerable increase of the internal mechanical strength and of the service life of CMCs. By employing the method in accordance with the invention, the percentage of rejects in the production of the capacitors can be reduced considerably.Type: GrantFiled: December 2, 1997Date of Patent: October 3, 2000Assignee: U.S. Philips CorporationInventors: Hermanus G.
