Abstract: An aqueous 30 wt. % solution of formaldehyde trickled with an equal volume of NaOH solution over a zeolite (NaX, 5A, or Na Mordenite) at 94.degree. C., 1 atm, 1.21-2.36 liquid hourly space velocity, catalytically condenses to HOCH.sub.2 CHO, glycolaldehyde, a fraction of which then converts to HOCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH, ethylene glycol, by cross-Cannizzaro side reaction. Zeolite degradation is prevented by maintaining pH near 11. Selectivity can be controlled so that less than 1% byproduct formose sugars are made. Methanol and sodium formate are also byproducts. All of the remaining glycolaldehyde could, in principle, be converted to ethylene glycol in either a subsequent cross-Cannizzaro reaction or a hydrogenation step. Thus, the reaction represents a potential non-petrochemical route for either glycolaldehyde or ethylene glycol from CO+H.sub.2, via methanol and formaldehyde.

Abstract: Meter lock including a band for embracing and holding together a meter flange and a corresponding flange on a meter box, the lock including a housing for holding and locking together the ends of the band with a disengagement taking place only by removal of a locking pin.
Abstract: Latch lock hardware for a window having a latch-lug that is insertable into a latch pocket in the casing for tilting purposes. The latch lock hardware comprises a pair of vertically-spaced cams located on the casing above the latch-pocket and a pair of vertically-spaced elements mounted on the window. The upper element is located beneath the upper cam to prevent removal of the window for a small tilting angle of the window and the lower element is located beneath the lower cam to prevent removal of the window for a relatively larger tilting angle of the window.
Abstract: An antiseptic composition, particularly useful against bromidrosis, is prepared by using a disinfecting surface-active amino acid in water having dispersed therein one or several triglycerides of fatty acids of C.sub.12 to C.sub.20. The composition contains 0.3 to 5% by weight of the above bactericidal and fungicidal surface-active amino acid, a fatty material comprising said triglyceride, water and at least one of the vitamins A and E, and preferably also some sterols. The amino acid has the structure RNH(R.sup.1 NH).sub.n R.sup.2 COOH where R is an aliphatic chain of 8 to 18C, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkylenes, while n is 0 or 1.0 or 2.0. Preferably the composition further contains a pesticide quaternary ammonium derivative. The composition is very effective agaist bromidrosis, particularly that of the feet, without any irritant action on the skin.
