    Abstract: An excellent lubricant and surface conditioner layer on formed metal surfaces, particularly aluminum cans that have been previously provided with a chromium oxide conversion coating, can be formed by contacting the cans with an aqueous lubricant and surface conditioner forming composition that contains at least one oxa acid or methyl ester thereof corresponding to general formula (I):CH.sub.3 (CH.sub.2).sub.a O(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O).sub.x CH.sub.2 C(O)OR(I),where each of n and x, which may be the same or different, is a positive integer and R represents H or CH.sub.3 and at least 20 weight % of the total content corresponding to general formula (I) does so when x is at least 8, and then drying the thus-treated cans.

    Abstract: Substantially improved hydrophilicity can be provided to a metal substrate, particularly an aluminum alloy of the type used for heat exchanger fins, that has been previously provided with a conventional chromium oxide conversion coating, by drying into place on the surface of the chromium oxide conversion coating an aqueous liquid hydrophilicizing treatment composition containing at least one of: (i) aproduct or products of reaction between dissolved phosphoric acid and at least one of elemental metal, metal oxides, and metal hydroxides in contact therewith; (ii) tungstate ions; and (iii) at least one of sulfate or molybdate ions together with polyethyleneimine. Most preferably, a solution formed by dissolving MgO in aqueous H.sub.3 PO.sub.4 in the proper stoichiometric amount to form an aqueous solution of Mg(H.sub.2 PO.sub.4).sub.2 with a pH of 4.5-5.5 is used for the hydrophilicizing treatment.

Particularly suitable materials include glycerin, propylene glycol, low molecular weight glycol condensation polymers, and monoethers of these glycol condensation polymers. Water is also usually present in the highlighter liquid, which has a long open time and does not damage the substrate even if left in place for a day or more.

    Abstract: A coating apparatus is disclosed for applying a coating material on one or more zones of a substrate material. In one embodiment, the coating applicators have fluid-wicking strips that apply the coatings directly to the substrate, while in another embodiment, the fluid-wicking strips indirectly apply the coatings to the substrate via feed rolls. Metering mechanisms supply predetermined amounts of coating material to the fluid-wicking strips. Each coating applicator has a housing with a recess for receiving one the fluid-wicking strips therein. One of the fluid-wicking strips is mounted in each housing which has a plurality of transversely spaced passageways. Each passageway of each applicator housing is fluidly coupled to its own separate air actuated metering mechanism which dispenses coating material to the portion of the fluid-wicking strip adjacent thereto. A desired quantity of coating material is simultaneously delivered via the metering mechanisms to each of the applicator housings.

    Abstract: The use of selected cation exchange resins to remove dissolved multivalent cations ions such as iron, zinc, and chromium from used autodeposition compositions permits reuse of the autodeposition compositions without the need for added surfactant and without developing any undesirable graininess or other texture in the coatings formed. Iminodiacetate cation exchange resins are very effective for removing iron ions when they are the only multivalent ions to be removed, and can be efficiently regenerated with 0.5 to 4% by weight aqueous hydrofluoric acid. By proper choice of other cation exchange resins and operating conditions, zinc can be selectively extracted from autodeposition baths containing both iron and zinc, and either iron or zinc can be selectively displaced from the loaded ion exchange resin.
