Abstract: The invention relates to recovering a carrier for a synchronous demodulator, that receives an input signal. A carrier is reconstructed for the provided input signal, and the input signal (in) and carrier (tr) are mixed to generate a mixed signal to be outputted (i, q), wherein a residual phase error of the mixed signal is corrected by a phase shift to provide a phase corrected output signal.
Abstract: A liquid heating vessel comprising heating means for heating liquid in the vessel, electronic control means, electromagnetic switching means for interrupting or reducing power to the heating means, and temperature sensing means for providing a signal dependent on the temperature of liquid in the vessel to the control means. The control means is arranged to operate the electromagnetic switching means to interrupt or reduce power to the heating means in response to the control means determining that a pre-determined temperature condition has been reached.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for non-invasively determining the blood oxygenation within a subject's tissue is provided that utilizes a near infrared spectrophotometric (NIRS) sensor capable of transmitting a light signal into the tissue of a subject and sensing the light signal once it has passed through the tissue via transmittance or reflectance.
Abstract: A method and apparatus for calibrating an NIRS system which includes a sensor portion and for evaluating an NIRS system for proper functioning is provided that includes an enclosure with at least two windows disposed in a wall of the enclosure. The windows allow the light source and one or more detectors of an NIRS system sensor to interface with the enclosure. One window is dedicated to the light source while each light detector has a window dedicated thereto. Thus, the enclosure includes a number of windows equal to the number of light detectors in the NIRS system sensor plus one. The inner surface of the wall(s) of the enclosure is of a light-absorbing color; e.g., black. A diffuse reflectance member of a light-reflecting color, e.g., white, is disposed in the enclosure spaced apart from the surface with the windows disposed therein.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for determining at least one characteristic of a fluid flowing within a pipe is provided. The fluid flow may include one or more liquid component bodies and one or more gas component bodies, which bodies occupy a substantial cross-sectional area of the pipe when passing a location in the pipe. The method includes, and the apparatus includes elements operable to perform, the steps of: 1) transmitting a signal into the fluid flow at the location within the pipe, and receiving the signal after it has traversed at least a portion of the fluid flow; 2) determining a time of flight of the signal traversing the fluid flow; 3) determining the presence of a liquid component body at the location in the pipe, using the determined time of flight; and 4) determining at least one characteristic of the fluid using fluid data generated if the liquid component body is present at the location.
Abstract: A method and system is provided for updating a sensor disposed within a mobile unit. The method includes the steps of: a) providing a remote server and at least one sensor, which remote server and sensor are located in the mobile unit and are in communications with one another through a first wireless network, and wherein the sensor has a first functionality; b) receiving an update signal transmitted from a base server to the remote server over a second wireless network; c) transmitting the received update signal from the remote server to the sensor over the first wireless network; and d) reconfiguring the sensor from the first functionality to a second functionality based upon the transmitted update signal.

Abstract: A rotary cutting tool is provided having an axis of rotation, a shank section, a fluted section, and a plurality of helical teeth. The shank section and the fluted section both extend along the axis of rotation. The fluted section has a first end integrally attached to the shank section, a second end, and an outer surface extending between the first and second ends. A plurality of helical teeth is disposed along the outer surface, each having a cutting edge and an undulating geometry. The helical teeth are arranged so that rotationally successive cutting edges are sufficiently dissimilar relative to one another to inhibit a detrimental periodic response in the rotary cutting tool.
Abstract: A system for data transmission over an electricity distribution network. The system having an electrical apparatus having a shielded cable connected thereto. The cable has a core surrounded by a metallic sheath and armour surrounding the metallic sheath, wherein the armour is disengaged from around the metallic sheath at a position where the cable enters the apparatus and is supported relative to the apparatus at a position spaced from that position such that a portion of the metallic sheath is exposed.

Abstract: A system for use in a motor vehicle includes a wireless receiver that receives, over a wireless communication channel, supplemental information representative of the characteristics of the contents of a playback media, and provides received supplemental information indicative thereof. A playback device receives the received supplemental information and stores the received supplemental information in a non-volatile memory device. The playback unit may generate a request for supplement information in response to and indicative of a playback media inserted into the playback unit. The system may also include a wireless transmitter that receives the request and transmits the received request over the communication channel. In another embodiment, a radio connection is established between a computing device and the wireless receiver.
