  • Patent number: 5151144
Abstract: Process for the manufacture of a tube for an expansion shaft. A plurality of fiber strata, each consisting essentially of long continuous fibers, and at least one layer of honeycomb material, the fiber strata and the layer(s) of honeycomb material being in alternating sequence forming are a sandwich compound, are applied to a mandrel having moldings or projections thereon. The fiber strata are applied so that few if any fibers are severed by the moldings. The tube has apertures, which are formed by the moldings. In order that the necessary openings do not weaken the structure of the carbon fibers, they are placed around the moldings forming the apertures and afterwards the sandwich compound is saturated with epoxy. The remarkable feature of the tube is the extremely light weight and the resulting advantages especially with regard to its handling.

  • Patent number: 5149743
Abstract: Novel halostyrene telechelic polymers having from 2 to about 6 terminal halogens, halostyrene-polyether, block copolymers having ABA type structures in star type structures, depending on the number of halogen terminii in the starting halostyrene block, and a process for their formation is described. The halostyrene polymers are formed by the initiator transfer agent or inifer polymerization method; while the polyether block is polymerized by silver catalysis of monomers such as tetrahydrofuran. The polymers and copolymers have good flame resistance.

  • Patent number: 5148315
Abstract: A method for cancelling or minimizing the effects of diffraction in wave fields in a wide range of imaging instruments such as telescopes, radar, cameras, ultrasound imaging devices and others, or from laser beams, is described, based on the premise that diffraction is associated with the bending of the energy streamlines of a field, so that such cancellation or minimization of diffraction effects is accomplished by shortening the optical path length normal to the aperture systematically by a function D(x) which has the general form of a superellipse with a minor axis of L and a major axis of A/2, where L is the wave-length of the wave-field, and A is the width or diameter of the aperture, so that the bent streamlines of energy flow near the aperture edge are straightened and the resulting diffraction standing wave pattern is cancelled.

  • Patent number: 5142430
Abstract: The invention is directed to power line filter and surge protection circuit components and the circuits in which they are used to form a protective device for electrical equipment. The circuit components comprise wafers or disks of material having desired electrical properties such as varistor or capacitive characteristics. The disks are provided with electrode patterns on surfaces thereof which coact with apertures formed therein so as to electrically connect the components to electrical conductors of a system easily and effectively. The electrode patterns act in conjunction with one another to form common electrodes with the material interposed therebetween. The electrode patterns are optimized in the circuit components such that balanced protection is achieved over all electrical conductors. The components also eliminate the use of leads such that operating characteristics are improved significantly.

  • Patent number: 5136926
Abstract: A vibration generator including an inertial body and a housing which are relatively movable and where hydraulic fluid is directed into the inertial body through a control valve mounted in the inertial body, the fluid being directed alternately into one or another working chamber which causes oscillation of the housing and any attached load. A wave form shape of pressure or flow rate of the hydraulic fluid flow is detected and used to control the frequency at which the vibration generator oscillates so that the frequency is maintained at a resonant frequency. The device has particular application in a frequency range of 20 Hertz to 1000 Hertz.

  • Patent number: 5136221
Abstract: Method and device for controlling a powered automotive seat of a rotatable type, wherein said seat is caused to move to a neutral position where said seat is free from contact with other adjacent fittings or other occupant, before being subjected to automatic rotation between drive position and climbing/descending position. Further, such automatic rotation of seat is permitted only when a door detector detects the door to be opened at an opening angle larger than a predetermined angle.

  • Patent number: 5134846
Abstract: A cover for insulating exhaust systems of internal combustion engines comprising a tubular shaped layer of insulating material circumscribingly engaging the exhaust system and a flexible metal sleeve for protecting the insulating material and holding the insulating material against the exhaust system. The present invention is held in place using mechanic's wire or steel tie wraps such as a hose clamp. The present invention can also be varied for use in retrofitting existing exhaust systems. In this manner, the insulating layer and flexible metal sleeve are made of sheet material which can be wrapped around the installed exhaust system without necessitating removal of the system.

  • Patent number: 5128382
Abstract: Supercritical drying has distinct advantages in generating microcellular materials. The dimensional stability of the polymer is not affected on drying because the supercritical process does not go through the two phase path and therefore the effect of capillary forces is absent. This helps in maintaining the morphology of the final polymer structure and better control over cell size.Organic microcellular foams were prepared by polymerizing directly in a near-critical fluid and pursuing the supercritical drying in the same reactor. The critical variables are the choice of a diluent with a strong enough solvent power to stabilize the polymer matrix, but with a low enough critical temperature to permit critical point drying without damage to the polymer matrix.

  • Patent number: RE34068
Abstract: The improved racquet has a strung surface which is larger in area than the strung surface of a conventional racquet, and in which the strung area is both longer in length and width than the strung area of a conventional racquet. However, the overall weight and balance of a conventional racquetball racquet which have proven necessary for good playing characteristics for all such racquets have been maintained. The racquet has synergistically combined the weight of the racquet, the center of mass of the racquet, the stiffness of the frame, and the response characteristics to create a racquet of sufficient durability with a larger "sweet spot" to facilitate the playing of the sport and to increase the level of skill, particularly of the novice and intermediate players. The racquet has an overall length of .[.181/2.]. .Iadd.19 .Iaddend.
