  • Patent number: 4875314
Abstract: A structural connection system for resisting uplift loads on the shear walls for each level of a wood frames structure includes anchors for each level. The system, employed at least at the lateral ends of the shear walls, compressively restrains the shear walls against upward movement. The anchors, which are vertically aligned, are coupled to one another through tie rods. A tie rod connects the anchor for the bottom floor to a foundation anchor embedded in the foundation. The anchors and tie rods are positioned between pairs of closely spaced vertical framing elements, such as studs. Uplift loads for each level are transferred to the foundation through the connection system. This eliminates any accumulation of uplift loads from level to level.

  • Patent number: 4869759
Abstract: A method and apparatus for installing sidewall replacement members on a used tire carcass by attaching sidewall members to the pre-buffed and cement coated sidewalls of the tire carcass, covering each sidewall member with a flexible sidewall mold, placing a flexible curing envelope around said tire carcass including the sidewall molds and sealing the envelope in the bead area of the tire carcass. The envelope covered tire carcass is then placed in a curing chamber at a preselected temperature and pressures for time period sufficient to cure said sidewall members and bond them on said tire carcass. The sidewall members can be installed in conjunction with the installation of tread rubber on the tire.

  • Patent number: 4857126
Abstract: In the making of coated paper products an improved process is disclosed for separating wet, semi-dry or dried coated paper from an application unit or a drying roll. The process comprises the steps of providing a paper web with a release composition in the form of an aqueous layer or film including the reaction product of alkanolamine and a fatty acid in equimolar proportions, providing an agent to maintain the pH factor to predetermined level and adding preselected amounts of a viscosity-regulating substance and water. The release composition may be applied directly to a drying roll or drum or to fluting rolls use for corrugated paperboard.

  • Patent number: 4854172
Abstract: Method and apparatus for evaluating the density profile of a wood-derived specimen. A sample of the material is mounted on a lathe and rotated at high speed. An acoustic emission transducer is coupled to a cutting tool, brought into contact with the specimen to produce an AE signal, as the tool is moved across the thickness of the rotating sample. The acoustic emission signal is then transformed into an electrical signal and the resultant electrical signal is amplified and transmitted to a second amplifier for further amplification and analysis of the signal.

  • Patent number: 4854652
Abstract: A pair of portable self contained voting booths comprised of main base members which fit together to form a compact carrying case for all of the other components of the two booths including support legs and foldable privacy shields. Each base member has corner sockets for receiving the support legs from below and a recessed central portion that provides storage space for the support legs and shield, when the base members are held together by removable clips in their storage and transporting mode. When erected for use, the base members are separated by release of the clips so that, the support legs and privacy shields for both booths can be quickly installed and set up to provide two voting stations.

  • Patent number: 4852054
Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting leaks in underground tanks containing a liquid. The pressure and temperature of the liquid are measured over a predetermining time interval, while simultaneously measuring the liquid level in the tank and the temperature of the liquid therein. From each measuring step the leak rate of the liquid from the tank is calculated and the two calculated leak rates are compared with each other. The temperature at a series of different depths in the tank is measured. Other measurements are made and fed to a suitable computer which computes the leakage rate.

  • Patent number: 4850989
Abstract: A diaper includes a flexible outer film impermeable to liquids and, on the inside surface of the outer film, longitudinal strips of adhesive and an absorbent pad. The pad has longitudinal edges set back from longitudinal edges of the outer film and transverse edges set back from transverse edges of the outer film. A flexible inner film permeable to liquids covers the inside surface of the outer film and the absorbent pad. It is adhesively bonded to the outer film in the area of contact between the films around the pad. Longitudinal elastic members are adhesively bonded while under tension to the outside surface of the outer film, along a central part of its longitudinal edge portions. The diaper also includes attachment means for fastening it around the body of the wearer and two flexible film tapes on the outside surface of the outer film over all its length and over a width that is greater than the width of the elastic members. These tapes enclose the elastic members.

  • Patent number: 4850339
Abstract: A solar oven. A rectangular cooking pan has a bottom and four side walls and is open at the upper end. It is in an exterior casing having a bottom and four side walls, and having an outer coating to lower the heat absorption. A body of insulation lies between the cooking pan and the exterior casing; the top edges of the body of insulation, the casing, and the cooking pan are coplanar to provide a rectangular shelf. A glass-supporting frame encloses and protects a sheet of low-iron, heat-conductive glass. A mirror-supporting frame has a solid top portion and sheet and supports a mirror combination, which comprises either a sheet of silvered glass or a sheet of polished aluminum, and a polyvinyl backing, so that the mirror combination has approximately 100% reflection on its lower side, below and opposite the top solid sheet. A support arm is pivoted to one side of the glass frame and has a series of openings therethrough.

  • Patent number: RE33089
Abstract: The position of the operator's finger or an actuating device on a transducing surface is used for controlling the level of utilization devices including theater lights controlled by an automated theater light control system. The transducing surface, which may be either an analog or a digital device, is elongated in shape and is immediately adjacent to an elongated display having individual light emitting devices to indicate the level of the utilization device being controlled. Circuitry connected to the transducing surface produces a first signal to indicate when an operator's finger or an actuating device is present on the transducing surface, and it produces a second signal to indicate the position of the operator's finger or the actuating device on the transducing surface. The second signal is supplied to the display, and the first and second signals are supplied to the utilization device.
