  • Patent number: 8067548
Abstract: A fusion protein having a non-immunoglobulin polypeptide having a cysteine residue proximal to the C terminal thereof, and an immunoglobulin component with a mutated hinge region is provided. The mutation comprises a point mutated site corresponding in position to the position in a native hinge region of the cysteine residue located nearest the cysteine residue of the non-Ig component. The distance from the cysteine residue of the non-immunoglobulin polypeptide and any remaining cysteine residues of the mutated hinge region is sufficient to prevent the formation of a disulphide bond therebetween.

  • Patent number: 8059194
Abstract: A loupe for use in conjunction with a digital SLR camera. The loupe is designed to couple to the lens mount of a camera to enable detection of any dust particles or other debris present on camera's image sensor. The loupe has a tubular housing having an access window slot formed therein to permit insertion of a cleaning tool into the interior of the housing to clean the image sensor while the loupe remains coupled to the camera. The invention thereby permits a user to more easily see dust particles or other debris on the image sensor during the cleaning operation.

  • Patent number: 8043860
Abstract: This application relates to vaprochromic coordination polymers useful for analyte detection. The vapochromism may be observed by visible color changes, changes in luminescence, and/or spectroscopic changes in the infrared (IR) signature. One or more of the above chromatic changes may be relied upon to identify a specific analyte, such as a volatile organic compound or a gas. The chromatic changes may be reversible to allow for successive analysis of different analytes using the same polymer. The polymer has the general formula MW[M?X(Z)Y]N wherein M and M? are the same or different metals capable of forming a coordinate complex with the Z moiety; Z is selected from the group consisting of halides, pseudohalides, thiolates, alkoxides and amides; W is between 1-6; X and Y are between 1-9; and N is between 1-5. Optionally, an organic ligand may be bound to M. In alternative embodiments of the invention M may be a transition metal, such as Cu and Zn.

  • Patent number: 8040591
Abstract: A reflective display having a plurality of transparent hemi-beads (60), each having a reflective region (80) surrounding a non-reflective region (82). Light absorbing, electrostatically charged ions are dissolved in an electrophoretic medium (20) maintained adjacent the hemi-beads. A voltage applied across the medium moves many ions into an evanescent wave region adjacent the hemi-beads where the ions absorb light, frustrating TIR at the reflective regions. Ions in the evanescent wave region also absorb light which does not undergo TIR and which would otherwise pass through the non-reflective regions. An opposite voltage applied across the medium moves many ions away from the hemi-beads, allowing light to undergo TIR at the reflective regions. The display's brightness can be enhanced by providing a backplane electrode (48) having reflective regions (108; 110, 112) for reflecting back through the hemi-beads light which passes through the non-reflective regions to the backplane electrode.

  • Patent number: 8041646
Abstract: An online payment method is disclosed which permits users to make realtime debit card payments over the Internet. The payor and payee pre-register with the system by sending their PAN, encrypted PIN and encryption key to the system database using a debit card reader, and then enter user names and secret IDs to be associated with the PAN and PIN numbers. When an online transaction is made the payor enters its user name and ID which is sent to the system along with the transaction amount and the payee user name. The system sends out a standard POS transaction using the stored PAN, encrypted PIN and encryption key. If approved it sends out a credit POS transaction to the payee in the same way.

  • Patent number: 8028480
Abstract: This application describes a wall construction and method of making the same in generally a Piece-en-piece mode. A vertical mortise is provided in adjacent vertical timber members and vertical mortises are cut into the end faces of horizontal timber members expected to be placed between adjacent vertical member. When the horizontal timber members are in place the vertical mortises align and wooden or metal splines can be inserted into the mortises thus securing the horizontal members laterally while still allowing them to move vertically to account for, for example, shrinkage in the wood. By substituting a mortise for a tenon, this invention reduces manufacturing costs and reduces assembly time and costs, as each horizontal timber can be set directly into place without lifting it to the top of the upright timber members.

  • Patent number: 8013462
Abstract: A wave energy converter has a primary body interconnected to a secondary body such that the bodies may oscillate longitudinally relative to one another. A slug mass is visco-elastically connected to the primary body. The slug mass has effective mass, stiffness and damping characteristics. A generator is drivingly connected between the primary and secondary bodies. The generator has a load damping characteristic. At least one of the characteristics is dynamically controllable, allowing the bodies' longitudinal motion to be varied in response to wave motion changes of the wave environment in which the wave energy converter is deployed, to maintain out-of-phase oscillation of the bodies, thus increasing the driving force imparted to the generator and thereby increasing the generator's electrical energy output.

  • Patent number: 8009209
Abstract: Methods for detecting defective pixels in imaging arrays involve establishing probabilities that individual pixels are defective and updating those probabilities by analysing images acquired by the imaging arrays. Probabilities may be evaluated for each of two or more defect conditions. The methods may be used to detect defects such as stuck-low, stuck-high, high-sensitivity, low sensitivity, hot, and defect-free conditions. Other more complicated defect conditions can also be detected. Apparatus for detecting defective pixels may be integrated with a camera or other imaging device or provided separately.

  • Patent number: 7997309
Abstract: A system for measuring the length of a tree being processed through a delimber including a log feed roller mechanism for moving the tree, a delimbing head for delimbing the tree that is movable in a forward and reverse direction relative to the log feed roller mechanism, a measuring wheel resiliently mounted on the delimbing head, and a trimsaw movably mounted on the delimbing head. • Patent number: 8000014
Abstract: Longitudinally adjacent plane mirrors (106-114) are pivotally interconnected in a columnar array (56) by non-stretching linkages (120) which constrain movement of the mirrors such that their normal vectors (115) remain parallel. Pivotable couplings (122, 124) in two mirrors permit movement of the mirrors with respect to mutually perpendicular axes (x, y) and prevent movement of the mirrors with respect to a third axis (z). Two actuators (117A, 117B) coupled to one of the pivotable couplings controllably move a selected mirror with respect to the mutually perpendicular axes (x, y). A first frame (116) couples the mirror columns together so that movement of the selected mirror moves all the mirrors in unison. The actuators controllably move the mirrors to orient the normal vectors such that the mirrors specularly reflect incident light in a preselected direction.
