  • Patent number: 6920998
Abstract: A container is provided with child drowning protection in the form of a bottom wall that is contoured in a manner that (1) allows it to stand upright on a flat support such as a floor, shelf or shipping pallet, and (2) in the event that the container contains some water or other liquid and a toddler leans forward into the container, e.g., in an attempt to retrieve a toy that has fallen into the container, the weight of the child on the container will cause the container to tip over, thereby spilling the contents and preventing the child from drowning in the container. Containers embodying the invention may be provided with covers that facilitate stacking covered containers one on top of the other. Additionally, the containers may be formed with an inclined sidewall, whereby to permit a plurality of open empty containers to be nested one inside the other.

  • Patent number: 6916418
Abstract: A cavitation assembly for purification of drinking water includes a generally cylindrically-shaped open-ended tube for flow of water therethrough, the tube comprising a transducer for converting electrical energy to acoustic energy and transmitting ultrasound through the water in the tube to induce cavitation in the water in the tube. A water moving means flows the water through the tube, and an electrical power source provides electrical power to the tube. The cavitation inactivates microorganisms in the water.

  • Patent number: 6913608
Abstract: A novel system for performing a heart valve annuloplasty. The system involves the use of a plication band. In one embodiment, the annulus of the valve is reduced by constriction of the plication band itself. More particularly, each plication band enters the tissue at two or more points which are spaced from one other by a distance which is dictated by the geometry of the plication band. Subsequent constriction of the plication band causes these points to move toward each other, thereby constricting the tissue trapped between these points and thus reducing the overall circumference of the valve annulus. In a second embodiment, the annulus of the valve is reduced by linking multiple plication bands to one other, using a linkage construct, and then using a shortening of the length of the linkage construct between each plication band so as to gather the tissue between each plication band, whereby to reduce the overall circumference of the valve annulus.

  • Patent number: 6912470
Abstract: Five protein families cooperate to form the warhead structure that characterizes enediyne compounds, both chromoprotein enediynes and non-chromoprotein enediynes. The protein families include a polyketide synthase and thioesterase protein which form a polyketide synthase catalytic complex involved in warhead formation in enediynes. Genes encoding a member of each of the five protein families are found in all enediyne biosynthetic loci. The genes and proteins may be used in genetic engineering applications to design new enediyne compounds and in methods to identify new enediyne biosynthetic loci.

  • Patent number: 6901831
Abstract: In a fixture for supporting a workpiece in a machine tool by means of two support elements held in a housing with the workpiece lying on them, the support elements are configured as levers held in a rotating mounting in the housing, the levers being driveably connected together by means of a threaded spindle. The threaded spindle has counter-rotating thread sections in areas corresponding to the support elements, and each of the counter-rotating thread sections of the spindle engage in a sliding block, the sliding blocks being rotatably mounted in holes in the support elements. The threaded spindle is provided with a device for locking the support elements in a set operating position. The two support elements are jointly adjustable and lockable, so that they can be set and readjusted within a short time and in a manner so that production inaccuracies are precluded.

  • Patent number: 6901928
Abstract: A superglottic and peri-laryngeal apparatus for supraglottic airway device insertion that contemporaneously clears a patient's upper airway of the tongue and other pharyngeal tissues, and raises the epiglottis without use of the medical practitioner's fingers in the upper airway. The insertion apparatus comprises an offset member with a compressor-lever shield at a distal insertion end and a handle at the proximal end thereof. The offset member, medially disposed between the handle and the compressor-lever shield, should preferably be configured to be substantially flat, consistent in thickness throughout and having a tight, arcuate shape. The compressor-lever shield member preferably widens from its junction with the offset member into a broad tip at its leading distal edge.

  • Patent number: 6896690
Abstract: The present invention discloses devices and methods for performing intravascular procedures with out cardiac bypass. The devices include various embodiments of temporary filter devices, temporary valves, and prosthetic valves. The temporary filter devices have one or more cannulae which provide access for surgical tools for effecting repair of the cardiac valves. A cannula may have filters of various configurations encircling the distal region of the cannula, which prevent embolitic material from entering the coronary arteries and aorta. The temporary valve devices may also have one or more cannulae which guide the insertion of the valve into the aorta. The valve devices expand in the aorta to occupy the entire flow path of the vessel. In one embodiment, the temporary valve is a disc of flexible, porous, material that acts to filter blood passing therethrough. A set of valve leaflets extend peripherally from the disc.

  • Patent number: 6885975
Abstract: Operators and plant computer programs used to operate a complex process facility are aided in managing the process during transitions by a computer-based apparatus. The apparatus incorporates a knowledge base and methods for identifying modes and transitions during plant operation. At frequent intervals, measured values of the process variables are used to evaluate the current state of the process and its sections and subsections. The identified state of the plant is broadcast to different clients of this application. The apparatus monitors the plant for the normal execution of the transition. It also identifies the current task being performed in the process and sends this message to different sections of the plant. The results are displayed on a visual display device and can also be sent to other plant computer programs for guidance during the transition.
