Abstract: A method and apparatus for fastening a first relatively soft structural component such as a wood panel to a second relatively hard structural component such as a steel angle iron using fasteners each having a forward self-drilling portion, a rearward, self-tapping portion, and an outwardly projecting head. The fasteners are driven by a pneumatic rotary impact driver and the method comprises rotatively driving each fastener so as to cause its self-drilling portion to drill a first hole through the wood panel and thereafter rotatively driving and impacting that fastener so as to cause its self-drilling portion to drill a second hole in the angle iron and its self-tapping portion to form a screw connection with the angle iron around the second hole.
Abstract: A double-acting door closure device that automatically returns a double-acting door to a preferred center position comprises first and second members each having a helical end surface extending transversely of its center axis. The first member is secured in spaced relation to a door jamb and the second member is mounted on and secured to a door post that extends through and is rotatable in the first member, with the helical end surface of the second member facing and engaging the helical end surface of the first member. The helical end surfaces coact with one another to gravitationally return a door attached to the door post to a closed position automatically after the door has been pushed opened and then released.

Abstract: A garment for a personal cooling or warming system, the garment comprising a carrier formed in the shape of the garment, and a bladder comprising at least two channel segments, wherein the channel segments have a substantially flat configuration so as to improve thermal efficiency.
Abstract: A nanoscale grasping device comprising at least three electrostatically actuated grasping elements. The use of at least three elements, which together define a plane, allows an object to be grasped more accurately, more easily held, and more readily manipulated. The grasping elements preferably comprise conductive nanotubes which are grown at specific points on a substrate (e.g., directly on an electrode), using chemical vapor deposition (“CVD”) techniques, thereby allowing the grasping device to be manufactured with greater control. Different types of electrostatic forces may be used to open or close the grasping tool. Such attractive and repulsive forces can be created through the application of either a constant voltage or an oscillating voltage.
Abstract: A pivoting handlebar assembly for a cycle is characterized by a pair of handlebars and a mechanical linkage system that permit the handlebars to be moved with relative ease from one to the other of a rearward outboard position and a forward inboard position while the cycle is in motion. The assembly includes means for assuring that the two handlebars will move in unison with one another relative to a central support. A trigger and cable-operated lock mechanism is provided for releasably locking the handlebars against pivotal movement.
Abstract: This invention relates to a system used to fashion, size, and implant a tissue annuloplasty band. This system comprises (1) a device to cut tissue; (2) a device to fashion (i.e., roll, fold, bunch, etc.) the tissue into a band (i.e., the tissue annuloplasty band); and (3) a sizer that comprises an mounting ring which allows for determining and maintaining the proper size and shape of the tissue annuloplasty band while it is attached to the annulus of a heart valve. These components can be used alone, together as a system, or in any combination to fashion, size, and/or implant the tissue annuloplasty band.

Abstract: A graft ligament anchor includes a tubular body having a bore therethrough and proximal and distal ends. A flange is attached to the tubular body at the proximal end thereof and extends radially outwardly beyond the tubular body. A deformable wall is disposed in the tubular body bore and defines, at least in part, a chamber for retaining the graft ligament therein. An expansion device is configured for insertion into the tubular body axially of the tubular body, and for impinging upon the deformable wall to press the deformable wall, and hence the graft ligament received in the chamber, toward a wall of the bore, whereby to fix the graft ligament in the tubular body.
Abstract: A novel application of independent component analysis (ICA) to data acquired by a single sensor. The technique exploits the unique relationship between multiple physiologic (source) and electronic (artifact) components in surface recorded sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) waveforms that are evoked by different activating magnitudes. A forward model of the SNAP is developed and used to test the approach on a simplified data simulation. The method is applied to experimental data and shown to be effective at separating artifact and source components and reconstructing artifact-free traces. A method of automated reconstruction for use within an expert system is also disclosed.
Abstract: A suture passer includes a longitudinally extending hollow cannula having a central passage slidingly receivable of a surgical suture; a manually graspable handle having an upper suture and being connected to the hollow cannula for manipulation thereof; a first guide connected to the upper surface of the handle, proximate a proximal end of the handle for releasably, guidingly, holding the surgical suture; and a second guide connected to the upper surface of the handle, distal to the first guide, for releasably, guidingly, holding the surgical suture. The suture passer can be provided in a kit, for use in the suturing of internal tissue, along with a cannula bender, various hollow surgical needles and surgical suture material. The suture passer finds particular use in the suturing of internal tissues which are at least partially accessible through a body cavity, e.g., arthroscopic surgery.
Abstract: A graft ligament anchor comprises a graft ligament engagement member disposed in an opening in a bone, the graft ligament engagement member being arranged to receive a graft ligament alongside the engagement member, and a locking member for disposition in the opening, and at least in part engageable with the graft ligament engagement member. Movement of the locking member in the opening causes the locking member to urge the engagement member, and the graft ligament therewith, toward a wall of the opening, to secure the graft ligament to the wall of the opening.

Abstract: The combination of a container and a screw-type lid is improved by a tamper-evident feature comprising a locking tab on the exterior of the container having upwardly facing teeth and mating teeth on the lid, the teeth on the container and lid being arranged so as be slidable relative to one another while in mutual engagement when the lid is rotated in one direction and to lock to one another when the lid is urged to rotate in an opposite direction. The tab is tearable to terminate the locking action, thereby evidencing tampering. A catch member formed on the container is positioned to engage and cam one of several latch lugs formed on the lid, whereby to establish a locking action with that latch lug. The catch member prevents removal of the lid from the container until the engaged latch lug is pressed inwardly far enough for it to be released from the catch member, whereupon the lid may be unscrewed from the container.
Abstract: The invention relates to a container for transporting fresh water by sea, comprising a flexible covering for receiving fresh water and a pulling device which is joined to the flexible covering and made of a tubular retaining body which is used for coupling bridle lines. A rapid filling and emptying of the container is achieved in such a way that the tubular retaining body is enclosed at least partially by the flexible covering and that filling and emptying openings in the tubular retaining body open directly into the space enclosed by the flexible covering. The present invention further relates to a method for filling or unloading such a container.
Abstract: A suture anchor having a conical surface and a bore in which an end of an insertion tool is inserted. The insertion end of the insertion tool is made of material having elastic properties. The bore and base of the suture anchor are angled with respect to the central axis of the suture anchor and preferably are parallel to each other. During insertion, the suture anchor is reoriented to fit into the hole, thereby bending the elastic end of the insertion tool. When the suture anchor is within cancellous bone tissue, the elastic properties of the insertion tool deploys the suture anchor to an orientation in which the suture anchor cannot fit through the bone hole, thereby firmly anchoring the suture anchor in the human bone.
