  • Patent number: 4444539
Abstract: A clamp for securing a railroad car in a rotary car dumper includes a guide pipe member mounted adjacent the section of track carried by the rotatable dumper frame, a clamp pipe member telescopically mated with the guide pipe member and a clamping jaw member extending laterally from the free end of the clamp pipe member toward the track section. Releasable coupling means in the form of a longitudinal slot in one pipe member which is engaged by a radially extending guide bar member tack welded or bolted to, or inserted in a slot in, the other pipe member permits the clamp pipe member to be extended and retracted relative to the guide pipe member by a coaxially mounted hydraulic cylinder while resisting rotational movement therebetween. If excessive torque is applied to the clamp pipe member, such as when the clamping jaw member is struck by a moving car, the guide bar member is sheared and the clamping pipe member rotates to swing the clamping jaw member out of the path of the car.

  • Patent number: 4442395
Abstract: In order to more effectively control the operation of surge valves in pumping stations through relatively long pipelines where liquid is pumped to an elevated discharge circuit and avoid excessive waste of water, where there is provided an electric solenoid to effect opening and subsequent closing of the surge valve and an electric circuit that responds to abnormal conditions which will result in a pressure surge of water with the unscheduled pump stoppage due to mechanical or electrical failure. This circuit operates to open the solenoid valve in time for the surge valve to open before the actual pressure surge of water arrives and closes after the surge has spent at least most of its force, so that liquid will be spilled for only a safe period of time. At the same time, the circuit will effect the successive display of pilot lights to indicate its condition at any time.

  • Patent number: 4439900
Abstract: The invention is concerned with a clamping device for clamping together a scaffolding pole and the flange of a construction member. The device comprises two body parts having arcuate seats, the two body parts being connected together at one end thereof for relative pivotal movement, and the device comprising clamping means to secure the body parts in clamping engagement with the scaffolding pole. The arcuate seats are spaced apart in the axial direction, and one body part comprises an integral extension portion, which extends generally parallel to the longitudinal axis, such that the arcuate seat on the other body part lies (in the axial direction) between the arcuate seat of said one body part and a flange-engaging surface of the extension portion. In this manner by tightening a single nut the clamping means may be operated to secure the clamping device to the scaffolding pole, and simultaneously clamp the flange between the extension portion and the scaffolding pole.

  • Patent number: 4439307
Abstract: Hot oil depleted shale from an indirect oil shale retorting process is charged into the top of a vertical shaft furnace together with sufficient oxygen to combust the residual carbon in the shale. Recycle process gas is fed into the bottom of the furnace for direct heating by the spent shale. The heated recycle process gas and combustion gases are withdrawn from the furnace separately to minimize dilution of the high BTU process gas. A selected quantity of coarse, cooled spent shale discharged from the bottom of the furnace is recycled to the top to moderate the temperature of combustion.

  • Patent number: 4437246
Abstract: A finishing apparatus for a pants-like garment is provided with a longitudinally extending support for a garment, a longitudinally extending, inflatable bag for supplying steam and air to the inside of the garment, and creasing blades that extend along the bag and engage the inside of the garment, such as each pants leg, to fold over the material and provide preliminary creases therealong. A pair of creasing heads also extend along the machine outside of the garment carried thereby and are provided with heating apparatus therefor. Each head has a pair of clamping blades swingably mounted to, after the inside creasing blades have been moved out of engagement with the folded-over length portions of the garment, cooperate with associated heads and engage the outside of the preliminary folded-over portions to provide final creases along the garment or the pants legs thereof.

  • Patent number: 4436611
Abstract: Recycle gas for the indirect retorting of oil shale, is heated after the oil has been recovered from the gas, utilizing the residual carbon in hot oil depleted shale. The hot oil depleted shale is charged into a vertical shaft furnace where it is combusted by the introduction of air into the upper portion of the furnace. The heat so generated is recovered from the lower part of the furnace for heating the recycle gas and cooling the spent shale. A portion of the coarse fraction of the cooled spent shale discharged from the bottom of the furnace is recycled to the top to regulate the temperature of combustion. The recycle gas may be heated directly by countercurrent contact with the hot, spent shale in the lower portion of the furnace or indirectly in a heat exchanger by an inert gas which is circulated through the lower portion of the furnace.

  • Patent number: 4434523
Abstract: A semi-concealed hinge has been provided for mounting a door in a relatively close adjustable operating relation with a furniture side rail or frame. A socket part is adapted to be substantially fully positioned within a backwardly and edgewise open slot in the door to carry a swing arm part on a hinged knuckle, in such a manner as to enable the door to be pressure-retained in a desired position, such as in a closed position. A connector or screw-on bracket-like plate is either integral with or secured to the swing arm part and, if it is a separate part, has a screw and slot mounted relation with the swing arm part that enables "up" and "down" adjustment of the door with respect to the frame. The connector or screw-on plate has opposed guide flange portions that are adapted to fit over and to be carried along opposite sides of the frame, and to cooperate with an inwardly positioned adjustment plate.

  • Patent number: 4431124
Abstract: Belt-like traveling guide apparatus has been provided for guiding side edges of metal strip material that is being positively advanced from, for example, an uncoiling station to a second or processing station. Side pairs of idler guide rolls are employed for maintaining the material in a planar relation during its movement, and idler head and tail and upper and lower guide rollers are employed for maintaining one side face of each of a pair of continuous belts in synchronized movement engagement with opposite side edges of the material to thereby protect them and, at the same time, positively and accurately align the material during its forwardly advancing movement between the stations.
