Abstract: A MOSFET can operate as a resistor by operating in the linear or ohmic region of the drain V-I characteristics. This region can be obtained by floating the gate of the MOSFET, when the dc current and the voltage drop are given. Multiple resistors can be duplicated (or mirrored) by sharing the same source and floating gate. The floating gate voltage can be simulated using a closed loop equivalent circuit. Alternatively, the gate voltage can also be derived from the given drain-to-source voltage and the given current in a feedback loop. With this adaptive MOSFET resistor, the minimum supply voltage can be as low as the sum of the BJT threshold and the complementary BJT saturation voltage, e.g. VCC?VBE+Vsat (e.g. 0.8+0.15<1.0V). The threshold voltage Vt should be less than VBE.
Abstract: The voltage-oscillator (VCO) in a frequency synthesizer using a phase-locked loop (PLL) is calibrated during power up or channel switching. The VCO has a coarse frequency control and a fine frequency control. The coarse control consists of digital bits that are used for calibration. The coarse control is connected to the charge pump output as in a regular PLL. By searching for the optimal control setting, the center frequency of the VCO is trimmed close to the desired frequency for the PLL to lock. This allows small VCO gain without losing the tolerance of process and temperature variations. As a result, the PLL phase noise performance is improved.

Abstract: Invisible different monochromatic images are inscribed in a diffractive optical element. Each of the images appears when a specific light source is on and image disappears when the specific light is off. The light sources for the different monochromatic images are spaced at different positions with respect to the diffractive optical element. A dynamic image is produced by time-varying and electronically controlling the intensity and on/off of the different light sources.
Abstract: A flat bed image scanner uses a contact image sensor to scan a document. The distance between the contact image sensor and the glass window, over which the document is placed, is minimized and held constant by inserting a lubricating element between the contact image sensor and the glass window. The lubricating element may comprise two pads placed at the two ends of the contact image sensor. The lubricating element can also be integrated structurally with the contact image sensor. The material of the lubricating element can be nylon or some other kinds of plastic. The lubricating element may also comprise two guide rails placed at the two edges of the scan window.
Abstract: This invention discloses novel device structures for fill color flat panel displays utilizing pseudomorphically cladded quantum dot nanocrystals. Different colors are obtained by changing the core size and composition of the quantum dots while maintaining a nearly defect-free lattice at the core-cladding interface. Light emission from the quantum dot core is obtained either by injection or by avalanche electroluminescence. A nanotip emitter device is also presented. These generic devices can be addressed using a variety of conventional display drivers, including active and passive matrix configuration.

Abstract: The present invention provides for a system and method of wirelessly triggering portable devices to provide a user with audio and/or visual information related to a show or attraction, for example, or for the purposes of captioning, language translation, assistive listening, and descriptive audio. As a person moves about a venue, a portable device receives signals from transmitters at venue locations. Transmissions may be via infrared or radio signals. The receiving device decodes each signal as a venue location, event time, or device trigger. The receiving device processes the signal and its memory to start a presentation on the device. The portable device memory contains audio, text, graphics, and/or visual content; device playback may contain one or many of these stored contents. The stored content may be synchronized with the user's location, time of travel, time of day, time of a show, or an event in a show. Stored content may be in one or many languages.

Abstract: A one piece arm encircling dialysis clamp formed of a plastic material that is firm in thick sections and elastic in thin sections, The clamp has smooth pressure applying head for applying direct pressure to the openings to blood vessels after the dialysis needles and tubes are removed. The clamp is provided with an integral arm encircling elastic band that is provided with a multiplicity of orifices that can engage projections at the fop surface of the clamp to provide an adjustable size clamp that is self-repositioning. The clamp is of unitary construction and has geometries that permit ready cleaning and sanitizing for reuse.
Abstract: An archer's silent running roller guide is taught. The roller guide Is rendered silent by providing a v-shaped arrow guide wherein the v-shape is formed by the outer perimeters of two low inertia silent running roller bearings with a sound-muffling material wrapping the outer perimeter of the bearings. The v-shaped guide acting in cooperation with a coil spring serves to respond to the forces of displacement present at the instant the arrow is launched and to return the guide to its original position after the arrow is gone.
Abstract: A dynamic energy converter is provided as an exercise and amusement apparatus. The physics of a torsion pendulum and button and string child's toy are employed in to provide a novel mode of exercise. An inertial component of significant mass and diameter has a flexible strand or cord of significant strength threaded through holes in the inertial component and formed into a closed loop. A means for gripping the ends of the loop of cord so that the inertial element is midway between the gripping means is attached to the loop. The user of the apparatus twirls the inertial element to create twists in the cord and then applies opposed tension to the cord to cause the inertial component to rotate as the twists in the cord unwind. The inertia of the inertial element under controlled tension causes the cord to unwind and then wind in the opposite direction until increased tension in the cord causes the inertial component to rotate and accelerate in the opposite direction.
Abstract: A stabilizer is disclosed, for suppressing vibrations and whip during the machining long cylindrical work pieces. A mover causes arms to move away from the work piece when the mover is retracted and to move towards the work piece when the mover is extended. The positioning of links and pivots enables the arms to be moved a significant distance when the mover is moved a short distance and thereby permits the use of the stabilizer between a guard and the path of movement of the work piece. The mover is provided with adjustments for changing the force with which the mover acts and to adjust the force applied to the work piece.
Abstract: Two optical modules with reflecting mirrors provide two moving speeds so as to maintain a constant light path between the scanned image and the image sensor. One of the optical modules, the first module, is mounted with two driving wheels. One driving wheel rubs against a stretched belt to move the first module in one direction. The second driving wheel pulls the second optical module toward or away from the first optical module by means of a second belt which is connected to two sides of the second optical module and loops around the second driving wheel. When the two driving wheels rotate in the same direction, the second optical module moves a half as fast as the first optical module. When the two driving wheels rotate in opposite direction, the second optical module moves twice as fast as the first optical module. Thus, two different moving speeds of the modules are achieved.
Abstract: A Call State Control Function (CSCF) and method of processing a call to a called mobile station (MS). The method is performed in all of the CSCFs in a third generation Internet Protocol (3G.IP) network. When an incoming call setup message such as a Fast Setup or Location Request message is received in the CSCF, the CSCF first determines with a relationship function, whether the CSCF is the Home CSCF for the called MS. If so, a first set of call processing steps are performed. If the CSCF is not the Home CSCF, the CSCF determines if it is currently serving the called MS. If the CSCF is the Serving CSCF, a second set of call processing steps are performed. If the CSCF is neither the Home CSCF nor the Serving CSCF for the called MS, a third set of call processing steps are performed.
Abstract: Surface mount diodes are mass produced by first cutting a metal plate to form a plurality of vertical slits within metal plate. Parallel lines are cut midway between the slits to form wings for the slits. The wings are folded to form the bottoms for surface mounting. Glue is applied over the metal plate to form focusing cups.

According to the system of the present invention, workers may make use of this system in environments in which typical electrical devices may not be used due to the presence of ambient ignitable gases and vapors. The enclosure may also be designed to have the properties of water tightness, air tightness and shock absorbtion.
Abstract: Thick metal plates are used both as leads and substrate of a laser diode package. The laser diode and the metal plate are covered with a sealing glue up to the outside end of the laser diode to form a unitary structure. The thick metal plates serve as a heat sink. The outside end of the laser diode is not covered with glue so that the emitted is not attenuated. A photo diode is used to monitor the emitted light intensity. The photo diode can share a common electrode with the laser diode by mounting the photo diode on a step-down metal plate, so that the light emitted from the inside end of the laser diode is only partially blocked.
Abstract: A bookend that is formed from a single piece of sheet metal that is folded into a base, an upright, and a brace that has a free end.
