Abstract: An improved conveyor belt tensioner, accessible from the top of the conveyor has a push block which slides along an angled guide to apply force between the take up member and the frame of the conveyor. Also, a guide which is laterally movable along a cross support between the frame of the conveyor is provided to adjust the centering of the belt between the frame members.
Abstract: A tube type hot gas filter having a ceramic tube sheet supporting a plurality of tubular filter elements in a filter chamber includes an annular heating chamber surrounding the edge of said tube sheet and through which hot gas from the downstream side of the tube sheet passes as it exits the filter.
Abstract: A compact and easily cleanable device for separating solids from a stream of liquid entering the device includes a hollow base having a screen positioned spatially above the bottom of the base and tilted forwardly and downwardly to define a plane which is recessed from an opening in the base which is generally parallel to the screen. A cover is hingedly mounted adjacent the top of the device and includes a motor centrally positioned externally thereon having a drive shaft extending through the cover to the interior side thereof. A pair of wiper blades are rotatably driven on the shaft and are positioned between the interior of the cover and the screen so as to have an edge of the wiper blade rotatably movable on the screen for moving solids collected on the screen around the output shaft and upwardly toward a cutout adjacent the top of the shaft where the solids may exit the device.
Abstract: An improved organ retractor includes an elongate handle and a rigid stem extending from one end of the elongate handle. A hollow sleeve is positioned around the stem and is axially slidable along the stem from a retracted position partly inside of said handle to an extended position. The sleeve is bifurcated or divided axially in half adjacent a distal end thereof to define two opposed elongate resilient fingers. The distal ends of each of the fingers are movable from a closed position wherein those distal ends are substantially adjacent each other surrounding the rigid stem to an open position wherein the distal ends are spaced from each other. A connector arm is positioned between each of the fingers and the rigid stem. The connector arms move the fingers to an open position when the stem is in one of the retracted and extended positions and move the fingers to a closed position when the stem is in the other of the retracted and extended positions.
Abstract: A temperature sensing device includes a head piece having a solid metal body with a mounting surface and a recess within the mounting surface for receiving a thermocouple therein. The body has an attachment end, and hole extending through the attachment end which communicates with the recess such that a plurality of leads may extend through the hole and connect to the thermocouple. A thermocouple may be made by first removing the sheathing and insulation from the end of a thermocouple cable, exposing the leads and the leads are flattened or other wise shaped. Also the diameter of such cables can be reduced by subjecting them to a drawing process or a swedging process wherein the outer diameter of the sheath of the cable is reduced as is the diameters of the alloy leads within the cable.
Abstract: An excavating tool has a tungsten carbide insert which is more wear resistant and not subject to breakage because of being too brittle. The insert has a semispherical tip, a divergent midsection and a base with a conical rear surface. The insert is made with tungsten carbide particles sized between 1 and 8 microns and averaging between 2 and 5 microns, blended with particles of a binder of which the binder comprises 5.5 to 6.5 percent of the blend by weight, and the insert is sintered to a hardness of 89.5 R.sub.a or more.

Abstract: A fluid operated machine is monitored and regulated by providing a logic with a memory for storing the timings of properly operating functions, and detectors the outputs of which are used to calculate the actual operating timings of the functions. The actual operating timings are compared to the timings in the memory, and if they deviate beyond acceptable tolerances a warning signal is given. In addition to monitoring the timings, the device will also open or close control flow valves to bring the operating speeds of functions within acceptable tolerances.
Abstract: A device for removing molecular pollutants from exhaust gasses has a cylindrical chamber and a rotating probe extending axially through the length of the chamber. A spark pin projects from the outer surface of the probe, and a train of high voltage electric pulses is applied across a cylindrical contact around the inner wall of the chamber and the spark pin. The train of high voltage pulses cause a pattern of sparks to form in the chamber which reduce molecular pollutants to non polluting compounds.
Abstract: A machine for cutting a length of pipe has a body with cross-sectional dimensions which are less than the inner diameter of the pipe to be cut. The machine has a plurality of legs which extend radially from the body such that the machine can be fitted within a length of pipe and locked in position by moving the legs radially outward. The machine further has a rotating tool for cutting the inner wall of the length of pipe.
Abstract: Brackets are fitted on the inner surface of a wheel cover to attach the wheel cover to a wheel having a plurality of hand holes. Each of the brackets has at least one finger adapted to fit through a hand hole on a wheel and extend behind the web of the wheel. The brackets are adjustable between a first condition in which the finger is movable with respect to the wheel cover, and a second condition in which the finger of the bracket is locked behind the web of a wheel.
Abstract: The noise received by the unused connectors limits the accuracy of a device for measuring the leakage from a piece of electronic medical equipment. To reduce noise the device is surrounded by a Faraday shield which encloses unused connectors of the device. The shielded connector includes a post having a transverse hole near its distal end. A coil spring surrounds the post end and is connected to the Faraday shield of the device. An insulated retainer prevents the distal end of the coil spring from extending beyond the end of the post. The retainer is compressed against the coil spring to expose the transverse hole when a lead is to be attached to the connector.
Abstract: A fluid flow meter has a housing within which inlet and outlet displacement rotors flank a blocking rotor. The end plates of the housing rotatably support all three rotors which rotate in a timed sequence in response to the passage of fluid through the meter. The cylindrical blocking rotor has a pair of disk-shaped endwalls joined by a rectangular, centrally-positioned web, and a pair of arcuate sidewalls which, with the endwalls and web define a pair of rotor cavities. Recesses in the housing end plates fit the blocking rotor endwalls and provide an added fluid seal. Use of the rotor endwalls makes it possible to manufacture the blocking rotor with a smaller diameter and thinner body portions, saving weight and rotational mass.
Abstract: A doweling hole drilling machine includes a vehicle such as a tractor having a frame pivotally mounted to the side of the tractor. The frame is moveable around an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle from a first horizontal orientation to a second vertical orientation, and the raising or lowering of the frame is powered by hydraulic cylinders. Positioned on the frame are a plurality of parallel mounted spaced drilling machines, each of which is positioned for drilling a hole perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Each of the drilling machines is mounted on a drive assembly for moving the machine axially to thereby force a drill bit in the machine to drill a hole. The frame is also laterally adjustable in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tractor and the lateral adjustment is also hydraulically powered.
Abstract: A collet for retaining a work piece comprises a plurality of wedge segments, and each of the wedge segments has inner and outer surfaces which, when the segments are assembled, form a collet having a cylindrical bore and a frustonconical outer surface, and the segments are retained in aligned relationship within a nut attachable to the machine.
Abstract: An improved cross flow ceramic filter is disclosed for utilization in high temperature, high pressure applications such as found in hot gas cleaning in coal based power generation. The cross flow ceramic filter of the present invention includes a plurality of identical corrugated sheets composed of chopped ceramic fiber matrix material and a plurality of predetermined sized end blocks shaped to fill the cross section passageways formed between the partly spaced corrugations of adjacent sheets of the filter material. One advantage of the corrugated sheet cross flow filter of the present invention is that the filter may be shipped to its site in semi-cured form unassembled. When the filter is received on site, the corrugated sheets are partially separated from each other until passageways of the desired dimension are achieved. Thereafter, the end blocks and glue may be applied between the blocks and the ends of the corrugated sheets and between the apexes of the corrugations where the corrugated sheets overlap.
Abstract: The jitter of a serial digital signal is measured by determining a recurrent time window and generating a measurement ramp for each window for which the amplitude of the ramp grows proportional to the positive transition of the digital signal. The amplitude of the ramps at the end of each recurrence of the time windows is converted to digital valves and the digital values are used to calculate jitter.
