    Abstract: An apparatus and method for making electrical resistance measurements of individual powered electrodes within a glass heating furnace is disclosed. The powered electrodes are energized in pairs with electrical power supplied at a relatively low frequency, causing electrical currents flow between the pairs of powered electrodes through a pool of molten glass so as to generate heat therein. A single reference electrode is also provided within the furnace. Each of the powered electrodes is sequentially paired with the reference electrode to permit voltage and current measurements to be made. To accomplish such measurements, a relatively small high frequency electrical signal is supplied to the powered electrode, in addition to the relatively low frequency heating power supplied thereto. As a result, a measurement current flows between the selected powered electrode and the reference electrode.

    Abstract: A refractory metal substrate suitable for use in contact with an oxygen- or nitrogen-containing environment at a temperature greater than the oxidation or mitridation acceleration temperature of the substrate is disclosed. The refractory metal substrate comprises a refractory metal comprised of molybdenum and having a coating comprised of chromium metal. In an alternative embodiment the refractory metal can be an alloy comprised of in weight percent: from about 10 to about 20 chromium, from about 0 to about 5 alumina (Al.sub.2 O.sub.3), from about 0 to about 1 yttria (Y.sub.2 O.sub.3), from about 0 to about 0.5 titanium, from about 0 to about 0.1 zirconium, the balance being essentially molybdenum to make 100% of the composition; and, optionally having a coating of chromium metal.

    Abstract: A digitally controlled apparatus for varying the temperature of a glass fiber forming bushing over a period of time is disclosed. A clock generates timing pulses at a predetermined frequency to a BCD counter. The output signals from the BCD counter are fed to a comparator means. BCD output signals generated by a plurality of manually operable switch assemblies are also fed to the comparator means. The switch assemblies are set by an operator to generate a predetermined number related to the amount of time required to wind a strand of glass fibers upon a tube. The comparator means generates an output pulse when the count of the BCD counter equals the number set by the switch assemblies, then resets the BCD counter to zero. The output pulses from the comparator means are fed to a binary counter. The output lines from the binary counter are connected to a digital to analog converter. The converter generates an analog output signal which is proportional to the magnitude of the number from the binary counter.

    Abstract: A bushing balance controller senses the temperature of each section of a multiple section glass fiber forming bushing by thermocouples or resistance (voltage drop) measuring techniques and injects electrical energy to all but one of the individual bushing sections and adjusts the supply of electrical energy to the entire bushing assembly thereby controlling the temperature of each individual section of the bushing. When thermocouples sensors are utilized, standard thermocouple driven temperature controllers may be utilized to provide a signal to a plurality of power packs, a primary power pack providing electrical energy to the entire bushing and smaller power packs controlling the injection of electrical energy to all but one of the bushing segments. A similar power pack and bushing control scheme accompanies the use of resistance (voltage drop) measurement techniques.
