  • Patent number: 4546584
Abstract: A panel system for walls, ceilings, and the like is disclosed in which the panels are provided with a flexible surface material which extends into resilient means that operate to press the surface material of adjacent panels into face-to-face contact to provide a closed, neat joint between adjacent panels. Because of the resiliency along the joints, brackets, screws, and the like may be inserted through the joints and secured to the panel supporting frame structure without damage to the panel materials. Subsequently, if the brackets, screws, and the like are removed, the resilient means returns the flexible sheet material into the face-to-face abutting condition, re-establishing the closed joint and concealing the fact that anything had previously been inserted through the joint. In some embodiments, the surface sheet material is provided with a loose flap which is inserted into the resilient means after the panels are installed.

  • Patent number: 4546639
Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming self tapping threaded fasteners having a cylindrical gripping portion and a tapered end portion with swaging lobes thereon is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of flat dies having a flat G-surface formed with thread rolling grooves therein to form the gripping cylindrical portion of the fastener. A rise angle surface having thread forming grooves therein with lobe forming recesses adjacent to the finished end operate to form the tapered point with lobes thereon. The G-surface is wider at the forward end of the die and progressively narrows until a dwell or finished portion is reached adjacent to the finish end of the die. Consequently, the threads along the tapered portion of the blank are not as fully formed as the threads along the cylindrical portion when the blank reaches the finishing end and excess material is available to fill the recesses and produce the lobes.

  • Patent number: 4547728
Abstract: An RF wattmeter is disclosed of the type using an "insertion-type" pick-up element to produce a voltage wave signal corresponding to the measured power in the coaxial transmission line. The induction loop in the pick-up element is connected to a principal detector, and a secondary detector is connected in opposition to the principal detector. Both detectors are located in close proximity to each other and are subject to the same thermal environment. A sine wave generator supplies a wave signal to the secondary detector in opposition to the wave signal supplied to the principal detector from the inductive loop. The d.c. portion of the resulting signal representing the difference between the opposed signals is integrated, and the integrated output is used as the amplitude in the generated sine wave. When the circuit is in balance, the integrated output matches the amplitude of the inductive wave form and can be used as an output indicating measured power in the coaxial transmission line.

  • Patent number: 4545170
Abstract: A novel and improved, expanded metal is disclosed along with novel and improved products incorporating such expanded metal. The expanded metal is formed from a piece of sheet metal which is lanced in nested arrays so that when the metal is expanded, diagonal legs are connected to the remaining portion of the sheet metal by folds. After the expanding operation, the legs are substantially coplanar with the adjacent portions of the piece of sheet metal, and the only material deformation of the metal occurs along the folds. The illustrated legs and adjacent projections, which are connected to the legs by folds, are curved so that the centers of the legs have a maximum width. The expanded metal is illustrated incorporated into various types of framing members used to position interior panels of building structures, such as drywall studs, floor tracks for drywall construction, and intersection tracks. Also disclosed are grid tees for suspension ceilings and wall molding members for suspension ceilings.

  • Patent number: 4543957
Abstract: Responses of a human subject may be by voice, hand or foot movement, or bodily secretions, as examples. A hiatus of such responses may be termed a lapse in the continuity of the response, including a hesitation pause in the voice, a movement of hand or foot on a monitored control of a motor vehicle or vehicle simulator, or pulsatile bodily secretions on a monitored control of an implantable insulin pump. In a voice response, the hesitation pause may be more than about one second in the voice of a subject during a dialogue or monologue. The hiatus rate of such responses is indicated by the present apparatus, as is the average hiatus duration for two or more hiatus rates. The dominant hiatus rate is also determined and indicated. A microprocessor is utilized in such determination. The foregoing abstract is merely a resume of one general application, is not a complete discussion of all principles of operation or applications, and is not to be construed as a limitation on the scope of the claimed subject matter.

  • Patent number: 4543800
Abstract: The door-mounted water and ice cube dispenser of a refrigerator is supplied with chilled water and electrical power by a water conveying conduit and a plurality of electrical conductors which together pass through a hollow pintle and socket portion of a lower hinge assembly pivotally supporting the refrigerator door. To facilitate removal of the door from the associated refrigerator cabinet, the lower end of the conduit is connected to an end of a chilled water supply line by a union type coupling, the lower ends of the conductors being connected to a plug engageable with an associated power supplying socket fixed to the refrigerator cabinet. The conduit and conductors extend upwardly from the lower hinge assembly to the dispenser location via the interior of an elongated, rigid, tubelike member that isolates the conduit and conductors from any thermal insulating material or other obstructions filling the interior volume of the door.

  • Patent number: 4542568
Abstract: An apparatus for forming helically wrapped spine fin heat exchanger tubes is disclosed which includes a rotatable cutter head operable to cut a strip of thin metal to provide a base portion and a multiplicity of spines integrally joined at one end to the base portion. A tube feed is provided to axially feed smooth tubing past the cutter head. As the tube is fed past the cutter head the cutter head operates to helically wind the spine fin material on the tube. A first drive is provided to drive the tube feed and cutter head in time relation to ensure that the tube is fed through a predetermined minimum distance during each revolution of the cutter head. A second drive is provided to increase the distance through which the tube is fed during each revolution of the cutter head to increase the helix angle of the material being wound onto the tube and correspondingly reduce the spine fin density at selected locations along the tube.

  • Patent number: 4542371
Abstract: This invention relates to a method of converting a digital signal into an analog signal and a digital-to-analog converter therefor. In the invention, a digital signal having varying pulse width values is converted into a first pulse width signal, with each pulse varying in its pulse width in response to its respective data values and with the center of each pulse width being at a fixed time position within a respective sampling period, while a complement of the digital signal is converted into a second pulse width signal with each pulse varying in its pulse width in response to its respective data value and relative to said center of each respective pulse width. The first and second pulse width signals, after one of them is inverted, are mixed and pass through a smoothing filter to demodulate the digital signal into the analog signal.
