  • Patent number: 4867774
Abstract: A method is described of producing an elongated glass body, particularly a preform for SiO.sub.2 -base optical waveguides, in which starting glass powder material is shaped to a porous body and the latter is sintered to form a glass body. In order to obtain uniform density throughout the porous body, the starting glass powder material is filled into and simultaneously compacted in a mold. Subsequently, the powder material compacted during the filling is consolidated by a heat treatment to result in the porous body. Molds of different design for the production of tubular or rod-shaped porous bodies are described.

  • Patent number: 4866777
Abstract: A polyphase digital filterbank extracts a spectral envelope composed of thirty-two bands, having uniform bandwidths, from a speech signal. The spectral envelope is then compressed into a predetermined number of bands having uniform bandwidths. Spectral energy features are extracted from the compressed envelope and are utilized to form templates representing the speech signal.

  • Patent number: 4864189
Abstract: Control plates in flat display devices are located between the cathode and the screen and serve to control the electron flow. To permit easy contacting even if the conductors (1) of the control plates are very narrow, the conductors (1) alternately have broadened ends on opposite sides of the control plate. The ends are broader by the width of the respective adjacent conductor.

  • Patent number: 4862122
Abstract: A dielectric notch filter for attenuating frequencies of relatively narrow bandwidth in comparison to the center frequency of operation, and particularly for attenuating such narrow bandwidths in the ultra-high frequency electromagnetic spectrum. The dielectric notch filter comprises a plurality of dielectric notch resonators coupled to a transmission line at slightly less than the quarter wavelength of the center frequency of the attenuation frequency bandwidth so as to minimize interaction between the individual dielectric notch resonators. Each dielectric notch resonator comprises a dielectric resonator, an associated housing and a coupling reactance element which in turn comprises an inductive wire and a variable capacitor so as to null the reactive component of the dielectric resonator, thereby resulting in a highly attenuated resonant frequency having little imaginary component about said center frequency.

  • Patent number: 4852171
Abstract: A template-matching speech recognition system has a plurality of reference templates each having a plurality of addressable positions, each position storing a value corresponding to the probability of the occurrence of a particular binary value in a corresponding position in an utterance template for speech represented by the referenced template. A system bias template having a corresponding plurality of positions for storing values therein that are representative of the probability of the particular binary value occurring in a corresponding position of any utterance template. A match between an utterance template and a reference template is determined when the sum of the stored probabilities from the reference template positions, corresponding to the positions in the utterance template containing the particular binary value, exceed a predetermined threshold.

  • Patent number: 4852157
Abstract: Real-time conversion between two different A/B signal coding schemes based on the DS1 time division multiplex format is achieved by time sharing a programmable state machine. The time sharing is accomplished synchronously with the DS1 superframe such that each of the 24 DS1 channels have signalling translated once every superframe. Programmability of the state machine is facilitated by the use of an EPROM. A RAM is used for real-time storage of signal states, machine states and processor provisioning for each channel, thereby facilitating time sharing of the state machines. Flexibility is provided through the unique use of an EPROM, which can be modified to directly change the signalling translation response depending on the type of telephony service being provided and the coding scheme used for the signalling. Processor provisioning of the RAM selects a service type translation for each of the 24 DS1 channels.

  • Patent number: 4838651
Abstract: A projection tube includes a liquid crystal cell having liquid crystal material sandwiched between two plates. The cell is addressable by an electron beam and serves as a light valve for plane-parallel light with which the projection tube is illuminated from behind. On the side facing the liquid crystal material, the plate on which the electron beam writes has dot coatings of indium-tin oxide to achieve a high resolution and a sharp definition of the image to be displayed on a screen. The side of the plate on which the electron beam writes has an insulating layer of magnesium oxide.

  • Patent number: 4838658
Abstract: A liquid crystal cell is disclosed in which the cell walls facing the liquid crystal material are provided with alignment layers of organic material. This material consists of polymer chains with side chains. The ends of the side chains interact with the liquid crystal molecules. The side chains are shorter than the liquid crystal molecules. By suitable choice of the length of the side chains, the tilt angle can be set. It is also possible to provide alternately different side chains one of which interacts with one end of the liquid crystal molecule, while the neighboring side chain interacts with the other end of the same molecule.

  • Patent number: 4835729
Abstract: In a cellular array processor at least two of the plurality of processors in a row cooperate together as an address generator so that large amounts of memory external to the array chip may be addressed and in addition so that an address . may be generated onboard for use by the DRAM memory associated with each processor. Based on this structure, a memory with an internal organization that is 256-bits wide may be connected to 16 16-bit processors which would require 256 bits of data. In so doing, a vast number of pins are saved, that is 256 bits of data out of the memory and 256 bits of data into the processing cells by combining the processing cells and memory on the same chip. It is significant that exactly one design of a processing cell may provide both a data processing element and an address processing element. In this way, these cells are interchangeable to maximize the yield and reliability of the device.

  • Patent number: 4827185
Abstract: In a color-picture tube, the conductive coating on the inside of the cone is a suspension without organic constituents. The conductive coating on the inside of the neck, which is contiguous to the conductive coating on the inside of the cone, consists of the aforementioned suspension with an addition of organic constituents. A sharp and scratch-resistant boundary between the conductive coating in the neck and the uncoated area of the neck is thus obtained.
