  • Patent number: 5416525
Abstract: A composite signal which comprises a video signal situated in the base band and a frequency-modulated audio signal situated outside the base band is coded by an N-bit pulse code modulator or an N-bit noise-shaped pulse code modulator with inadequate quality for, for example, N<5 (in particular for N=1) because, after modulation, demodulation and decoding, the video signal is found to affect the audio signal if, as is usual, the amplitude of the video signal is, for example, ten times greater than the amplitude of the frequency-modulated audio signal. If the amplitude of the video signal is not more than five times greater (in the ideal case one and a half times greater) than the amplitude of the frequency-modulated audio signal, the effect mentioned is apparently considerably reduced.

  • Patent number: 5410307
Abstract: Known systems based on layered video coding and video decoding code with inadequate efficiency because a new high-resolution picture is predicted by means of switching means present in the system either on a basis of the preceding high-resolution picture or on the basis of an instantaneous low-resolution picture. According to the invention, designing the switching means for a adjustment of a ratio of the signal representing a preceding high-resolution picture and the signal representing the instantaneous low-resolution picture and for then adding both adjusted signals achieves a gain of 3 dB in the prediction with the correct ratio, thus resulting in an improvement in the coding efficiency.

  • Patent number: 5402406
Abstract: A read only disc according to the present invention has a spiral recording track formed on the surface thereof. The recording track includes a plurality of record unit blocks formed continuously by an optical recording method, wherein each record unit block includes a dubbing permitted area and a dubbing inhibited area. Digital audio information having compressed data is recorded in the dubbing permitted area. On the other hand, display data associated with the digital audio information is recorded in the dubbing inhibited area. Thus, digital dubbing of digital audio information can be carried out and dubbing of display data is prevented to ensure dominance of the read only disc as a master software.

  • Patent number: 5401955
Abstract: Known optical noise sources are equipped with a light source and an interference filter, optically coupled thereto and based on path length difference, for generating an optical composition signal. If the spectrum of a photodiode to be illuminated with the optical composition signal is to be as flat as possible, said path length difference must be considerably greater than the coherence length of the light source which in present practice leads to disadvantageously large path length differences. By feeding, according to the invention, a noise signal to the light source, the coherence length of the light source decreases, as a result of which it is sufficient to use considerably smaller path length differences.

  • Patent number: 5400024
Abstract: Base station equipment of a digital mobile communication system includes a digital audio signal processing apparatus provided for each message channel for low bit rate coding and decoding a digital audio signal. Each digital audio signal processing apparatus includes a plurality of memories that store a plurality of low bit rate coding/decoding programs differing from each other to comply with different low bit rate coding/decoding methods. A system control circuit determines the low bit rate coding/decoding method of an applied digital signal for controlling a selector to select a memory that stores the corresponding low bit rate coding/decoding program. As a result, the digital audio signal processing apparatus perform digital to digital conversion of the applied digital signal according to the low bit rate coding/decoding program stored in the selected memory.

  • Patent number: 5396854
Abstract: A method for handling and sewing the perimeter of upholstered articles, in which the upholstered article is fed through the sewing machine on a table with a sliding surface in one of whose sides the said sewing machine is fixed, which is characterized by having some pusher elements which protrude from the plane of the table through some longitudinal and circumference arch shaped grooves, which are driven from the lower part of said table. The longitudinal pushers assist the linear feed of the upholstered article until its corner reaches the height of the sewing machine, when they withdraw to their initial position, at the same time as the turning pushers start to work. These turning pushers make the upholstered article turn, describing a circumference arch path of ninety degrees, while the head of said sewing machine sews the corner of said upholstered article in a synchronized manner.

  • Patent number: 5394539
Abstract: A data processing system, having virtual addressing capability, has a real storage manager to associate virtual storage locations with real storage by accessing page tables to determine the locations of "backed" virtual storage pages in central, expanded, or auxiliary storage. The real storage manager accepts requests to copy ranges of virtual storage from one virtual storage range to another, and, in so doing, uses the page tables to effectively perform the copying by reassigning backed pages from the source range to the target range. Having been reassigned to the target range, the backed pages are artificially aged by increasing the unreferenced interval count (UIC), so that the backed pages in the target range will be likely candidates for page stealing.

  • Patent number: 5381450
Abstract: A technique for determining the constellation size of a QAM signal received by a QAM receiver. In general, the implementation of my technique has, as an input signal, a QAM signal having one of a plurality of constellation sizes and determines of constellation size, e.g., 4, 16, 32-ary, by analyzing the probability density function (pdf) of the QAM signal over a pre-established time period. To properly analyze the QAM signal, the signal is-first squared and then normalized to a preset value, e.g., 2.0. As such, the signal power in any of the various constellations is normalized to a fixed level. By generating a histogram of the squared and normalized QAM signal, the technique determines the number of levels of modulation contained in the QAM signal. Each constellation size has a unique number of modulation levels and thus forms unique histogram. From the histogram, a particular constellation size can be determined.

  • Patent number: 5375165
Abstract: A computer peripheral device (200) including a conventional keyboard (201) and a telephone controller (320) for interconnecting an incoming telephone line (221) with a telephone instrument (235). Besides the standard array of keys (e.g. 205), the keyboard includes telephone control keys (e.g., 206, 207). A keyboard controller (310) is responsive to both the standard keys and the telephone keys to decode keyboard scan codes. The telephone keys cause a pre-determined keyboard area to operate in either a standard mode or a telephone mode. The keyboard controller transmits a synchronous serial data stream to the computer when operating in the standard mode. Alternatively, the keyboard controller transmits parallel control data to the telephone controller to control the set-up, interconnection, and take-down of the telephone line to the telephone instrument when the keyboard is placed in the telephone mode.

  • Patent number: 5367968
Abstract: Apparatus and a concomitant method for sewing seams in upholstered furniture such as mattresses. The apparatus contains a sewing machine located adjacent a conveyor belt which moves the mattress in a linear direction beneath the sewing machine, a presser arm for turning the mattress, and a fastening cylinder for temporarily attaching the mattress to the presser arm during the turning process. A single motor drives the sewing machine, the conveyor belt and the presser arm. As the mattress is moved by the conveyor belt at a first speed, the sewing machine sews a linear portion of a seam in the mattress. A sensor indicates when a corner of the mattress approaches the sewing machine. When the sensor indicates the approach of the corner, the conveyor belt is halted and the motor changes to a slower speed such that the sewing speed is slowed. Simultaneously, the fastening cylinder temporarily attaches a presser arm to the mattress.
