  • Patent number: 6076621
Abstract: A mobile work platform contains a base having two sections. The first section contains an energy source, a motor, a gearbox, a drive axle, and at least one drive wheel. The second section contains two steerable casters. The second section telescopes relative to the first section so that the distance between the drive axle and the controlled casters, and the length of the base, are variable. The platform also contains two ladders that are removably attached to the base and that and extend upward from the base, an upper horizontal working platform, and a control system for regulating the speed and direction of travel.

  • Patent number: 6012256
Abstract: The present invention relates to a moment-resistant structure, sustainer, and method of construction for deformably resisting episodic loads, particularly those of high intensity. The episodic loads may be due to earthquake, impact, or other intense episodic sources. The structure and sustainer may be in buildings, bridges, or other civil works, land vehicles, watercraft, aircraft, spacecraft, machinery, or other structural systems or apparati. Deformation capacity is enhanced by the use of multiple dissipative zones. Dissipative zones that function in a manner similar to plastic hinges are determined by one or more voids that are located in the web of a sustainer. The one or more voids are of a size, shape, and configuration to assure that the dissipative zones deform inelastically when a critical stress, i.e.

  • Patent number: 6004219
Abstract: A golf game is played with a standard golf club in and around a swimming pool having a surrounding deck. The game contains a floating green made of a sheet of floating foam having a cross-sectional area of at least about 10 square feet with an upper surface covered with a loop-type fabric upper surface. The game also contains a plurality of floating golf balls covered with a hook-type fabric. The game is played by hitting the floating golf balls with the golf club from the deck to the floating green in the pool.

  • Patent number: 5967666
Abstract: An air bearing assembly transports loads across a smooth and flat surface when pressurized with air. The air bearing assembly includes a frame and an air bearing. The frame has a flat side for supporting a load and has an inner ring extending from its other side. The air bearing includes a backing plate and a flexible diaphragm that forms an enclosed footprint on the surface when pressurized. The footprint of the diaphragm uniformly overlap the ring of the frame. A damping chamber is formed by the inner ring of the frame and by the backing plate. The damping chamber is sealed when the diaphragm is pressurized by the upward force exerted by the diaphragm upon the backing plate against the inner ring.

  • Patent number: 5946727
Abstract: A mitt enhances the sense of touch when worn on a hand of a user as an object is touched with the palm side of the fingertips. The apparatus is formed of an enclosure of first and second layer of a pliable and elastic material, a lubricant, and a third layer of sheet material. The first and second layers are sealed together along their perimeter to form the enclosure. The lubricant inside the enclosure is present in a quantity and with sufficient lubricity that the coefficient of kinetic friction between the walls of the enclosure is less than the coefficient of kinetic friction between the fingertips and the enclosure and less than the coefficient of kinetic friction between the object being touched and the enclosure.

  • Patent number: 5913389
Abstract: A wheel chock contains a first wheel-restraining member, a frame with a gear rack attached to the first wheel-restraining member, a second wheel-restraining member, a gear assembly attached to the second wheel-restraining member, and an elongated handle member. The gear assembly has a gear housing with an opening through which the frame passes and also has a releasably ratcheting pinion gear that engages the gear rack. A user holding the handle member from a standing position can restrain a wheel by moving the wheel chock into position on the wheel and then reducing the distance between the first and second wheel-restraining members so they touch the wheel, and can release the wheel by increasing the distance between the first and second wheel-restraining members and then removing the wheel chock.

  • Patent number: 5897007
Abstract: A nursing bottle helps reduce tooth decay. The nursing bottle contains a first reservoir for water, a second reservoir for a cariogenic liquid, and a nipple with two fluid flow paths. The first fluid flow path runs from the cariogenic liquid reservoir to an outlet opening in the tip of the nipple. The second fluid flow path runs from the water reservoir to lateral outlet openings near the tip of the nipple. When the reservoirs are filled and the bottle is used, the water enters the baby's mouth nearer the teeth than does the cariogenic liquid, thereby rinsing the teeth and reducing tooth decay.

  • Patent number: 5890510
Abstract: A retrofit kit replaces the thermostatic element in a radiator steam trap having a hollow body with a horizontal side steam inlet, a vertical bottom condensate outlet, and a top cover. The retrofit kit contains an insert with a restricted passageway that rests in and over the condensate outlet, a cylindrical spring for blocking the flow of particles into the restricted passageway of the insert, and a compression coil spring for holding the insert and screen in position. The restricted passageway in the insert contains a plurality of horizontal radial inlets in the upper portion of the insert that communicate with a vertical conduit extending downward through the insert, the vertical conduit having an opening at the bottom, but not at the top, of the insert.

  • Patent number: 5884924
Abstract: A wheelbarrow contains a tray, a frame, two legs, two handles, two axle brackets, a wheel axle, and a wheel. The wheelbarrow also contains two spaced apart roll bars extending from the frame in a forward and downward direction to a point forward of the forward edge of the tray, then curving upward and extending vertically for a distance of at least about six inches. The upward curve of the roll bar is located below the wheel axle. The upward curve of the roll bar contacts the ground and forms a fulcrum when the wheelbarrow is raised at an angle of not greater than about 40.degree. and so that the wheelbarrow will balance in a vertical resting position on the vertical extensions of the roll bars if the wheelbarrow is released after being raised at an angle of not greater than about 70.degree..

  • Patent number: 5866104
Abstract: A nail polish remover comprises about 25 to 95% glycol ether ester and about 5 to 75% glycol ether. The remover preferably comprises about 5 to 40% water. The remover is highly effective and yet is gentle to the nails and skin and relatively hazard-free. The remover is free of acetone and ethyl acetate, the two most widely used and hazardous solvents in current commercial nail polish removers.
