  • Patent number: 4262724
Abstract: A pneumatic run-flat insert for a pneumatic tire is provided with circumferential sections having different radii. During vehicle operation in a run-flat condition the different insert radii cause a vibratory disturbance at a wheel axle that alerts the driver of the existence of a run-flat condition or an abnormally low-pressure condition in the tire. During normal driving conditions there is clearance between the insert and the tire liner and no warning vibrations will occur in the wheel axle.In various embodiments of the invention the different insert radii correspond to two or more ply sections in an insert ply having different cord angles. A relatively high cord angle ply section will furnish a relatively larger radius than the ply section with a relatively low cord angle.

  • Patent number: 4257160
Abstract: A two-bladed safety razor has a platform unitary with the handle of the razor. The platform movably supports a blade carrier plate which in turn fixedly carries a shaving blade unit including an upper blade, lower blade and a spacer member interposed between the upper and lower blades. A cap member overlying the upper blade is connected to the platform. Between the upper and lower blades, interposed is an ejecting member which is fixed to at least one of the cap member and the platform. Means are provided for causing a movement of the blade carrier plate and, hence, of the shaving blade unit to and from a fully retracted position relatively to the ejecting member. The ejecting member is so located that the cutting edge of the lower blade is positioned flush with or behind the front surface of the ejecting member when the blade assembly takes the fully retracted position.

  • Patent number: 4254810
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a "run-flat" capability, is disclosed. The tire is in the form of a substantially toroidally shaped carcass having a pair of bead-reinforced sidewall regions and a crown region annularly bridging the sidewall regions. Internally of the carcass, there is provided an expandable nail-deflector for deflecting a nail that punctures, for example, the crown region. The nail deflector has a releasably constrained normal condition when the crown region is puncture-free that is annularly spaced from the interior of the crown region, and is circumferentially self-expandable into engagement with the interior of the crown region upon puncture of the latter by a nail to deflect such nail harmlessly away from its path of entry.

  • Patent number: 4227563
Abstract: A heavy duty pneumatic tire is provided with bead cores of symmetrical or asymmetrical polygonal cross-sectional. Extending radially outwardly therefrom are apex strips of a hard rubber compound which contact the bead cores along their radially outwardly oriented faces. The apex strips have a width at least as great as the width of the bead cores measured in a selected direction, and have a height of not more than 1.5 times the width of the bead cores. The terminal ends of turnups formed by wrapping a carcass ply radially about the bead cores, and reinforcement strips are enveloped in cushion elements of a rubber material which are softer than the carcass ply and the apex strips. The apex strips have a markedly compact shape cross sectionally and form with the bead cores, rigid units through which stresses occurring in the carcass during tire operation can be transferred.

  • Patent number: 4212340
Abstract: A radial carcass pneumatic tire having a carcass ply turn-up portion includes a reinforcement ply folded around each bead ring. Each reinforcement ply overlaps and extends beyond the turn-up edge of the carcass play and includes for example a steel cord portion of thick cross-section abutting a textile cord portion of thinner cross section. The cords throughout the reinforcement ply are arranged obliquely with the cords of the radial carcass ply. In other respective embodiments a transition zone between the thick and thin portions of the reinforcement ply includes a cover strip, an overlapping portion and a filler strip. The bead reinforcement constructions reduce bead element edge separations and provide a desirable graduated stiffness from the bead to the beginning area of the sidewall permitting optimal transferring of torque and force.

  • Patent number: 4197342
Abstract: The production, by either a batch process or a continuous process, of vehicle seat trim pads or like articles of cured polymer no-gel latex foam and having convex or crowned surfaces free of congealed polymer skin, is disclosed. In the process, a backing fabric is first laid on a pervious supporting surface. A no-gel latex foam is then deposited on the fabric, and an open-bottom open-top grid of a height not greater than that of the deposited mass of latex foam is placed into the latter, excess latex foam above the top plane of the grid being scraped off to impart to each pocket or island of foam a smooth and level top surface. The entire assembly is then subjected to dry heat to effect both a rapid dehydration and a curing of the latex foam. During the initial stage of this operation, the no-gel latex foam expands somewhat so that the top surface of each island thereof becomes crowned without having to be disposed in contact with a mold surface of appropriate contours.

  • Patent number: 4184530
Abstract: A pneumatic tire having a reinforcing belt which includes a first ply of cords formed from a synthetic material having a high modulus of elasticity and a second ply of metallic cords. The first ply has a width substantially equal to the width of the tread of the tire. The second ply has a width between one-fourth and three-fourths of the width of the tread. The second ply reinforces the median region of the tread. Each cord of the first ply intersects the median equatorial plane of the tire at a first angle of from 14.degree. to 30.degree.; each cord of the second ply intersects the median equatorial plane of the tire at a second angle of from 22.degree. to 32.degree.. The second angle is opposite in direction from the first angle. At least one strip of cords formed from a synthetic material having a low modulus of elongation overlaps an edge region of the second ply. The foregoing abstract is not to be taken as a complete exposition of the present invention.

  • Patent number: 4183389
Abstract: A heavy duty pneumatic tire includes a carcass having a crown region and a tread portion surrounding the crown region. A reinforcement belt is disposed circumferentially about the crown region between the carcass and the tread. The reinforcement belt includes a first ply of tire cord fabric with two free lateral edge portions folded over upon itself to form two skirts and a main portion. The cords in the first ply are steel and lie at an angle of from about 16.degree. to about 32.degree. with respect to the equatorial plane of the tire. A second ply of tire cord fabric is superimposed upon the first ply. The cords in the second ply are of textile composition and are disposed at an angle of substantially 0.degree. with respect to the equatorial plane of the tire. The second ply fetters or restrains the first ply onto the carcass and imparts to the carcass a substantially flat cross-sectional configuration in the crown region.
