Abstract: Apparatus for use in determining the orientation of a spinning spacecraft d for controlling the attitude motion thereof. In response to commands from an external processor, the apparatus enables a selected thruster at a commanded time delay after a solar-or earth-sensor reference pulse and fires the thruster a commanded number of times. The time difference between various sensor inputs is measured to determine spin rate and other data which is used by the external processor in calculating the firing sequence of the thrusters.

Abstract: A four-part electro-optical switch for switching optical radiation from one aveguide to another. Parallel waveguides are embedded in the surface of a substrate and provided with separating ends for transmitting radiation through the waveguides. Curved electrodes on the outer side of each waveguide in cooperation with a central electrode and separate voltage sources change the electro-optic properties of the waveguide such that radiation may be switched from one waveguide to the other when the voltage source is in the "on" state.

Abstract: An iron-doped indium phosphide or gallium arsenide semiconductor laser. The emiconductor material is doped when formed by uniformly distributing transition metal ions such as iron throughout the semiconductor. The concentration of the iron ions is from about 1.times.10.sup.15 to about 1.times.10.sup.18 ions per cubic centimeter, but is limited only by the solubility of iron indium phosphide or gallium arsenide. It has been determined that the greater the concentration of ions, the easier the laser emission is obtained. At liquid helium temperature, the iron-doped semiconductor laser will operate at a wavelength near 3 microns.

Abstract: A chemical converter-heat exchanger formed by a plurality of rows of paral, horizontal channels in a housing through which an inflowing fluid is heated. Vertical columns of horizontal channels connect alternately with an inlet and outlet manifold and carry the fluid back and forth horizontally in vertical columns of horizontal channels so that the inflowing fluid is partially heated by the outflowing fluid. Means are provided so that the bottom face of the housing is heated by the sun which in turn heats the fluid as the fluid passes through the bottom channels in the housing. A plurality of units may be mounted together to increase the output.

Abstract: A reflecting electron tube for producing high-power, high-frequency, monoomatic microwave pulses includes an anode which produces little or no ion flux when struck by electrons emitted from a cathode, and requires no applied, external magnetic field. An anode support holding the anode and a cathode shank which supports the cathode are positioned within a vacuum chamber such that the anode is closely spaced from the cathode. The anode support is connected to a pulsed high-voltage supply located external to the chamber. The anode is formed from a material which does not produce a significant amount of ion flux but does permit electrons emitted from the cathode to oscillate through the anode. Electrons oscillating in phase bunch together within the potential well of the system and emit microwave radiation.

Abstract: An electron-beam scanning system for investigating the nonuniformity of (1) he work function, (2) the position of the conduction-band edge with respect to the Fermi level, and (3) the electron affinity at the surface of a single-crystal semiconductor. A small-diameter, low-energy electron beam is scanned over the surface to be investigated. The current collected by the surface for electron energies in the retarding-field region is related to the work function of the surface, whereas the current collected by the surface for electron energies in the accelerating-field region is related to the position of the conduction-band edge. The electron affinity is related to the combination of these relationships. Variations in the current collected by the surface for appropriately selected electron energies are used to provide a visual display of variations in these quantities.

A beam of very-low-energy electrons (<10eV) is directed onto the surface of the semiconductor and the reflection pattern (beam energy v. current collected by the semiconductor) is analyzed using a kinematical approximation for the interference phenomena.

Abstract: A payload (e.g., a plasma, gas, magnetic field) having an initial energy density is confined within an implosion chamber which also contains a rotating liquid liner having an approximately cylindrical inner surface due to the rotational forces. An annular piston, disposed in the implosion chamber, is free to move parallel to the axis of rotation and has a surface in contact with a portion of the rotating liner. Motion of the piston against the liner (due to a pulsed external driving means) causes the inner surface of the liner to implode radially in said implosion chamber, thereby compressing the initial energy density to a higher energy density. The inner surface of the liner remains stable throughout compression due to the rotation of the liner. The other surfaces of the liner are stabilized by contact with the implosion chamber or the piston.
