  • Patent number: 5588218
Abstract: A protractor is disclosed that reduces the time to teach students how to measure and understand angles, and significantly improves overall student comprehension of angles. The protractor comprises two generally flat members each having a straight edge portion radial to a pivot point to which the members are rotatably attached such that the straight edges define an open sector area having an angle formed by the two edges, one member having angle indicia on a semi-circular portion thereof, and the other member having an indicator portion that intersects the angle indicia to enable the angle defined by the two straight edges to be measured. The protractor offers a significant increase in convenience in measuring and drawing angles.

  • Patent number: 5566867
Abstract: A kit of contoured foam pads (FIGS. 3 and 3a) is provided for attachment to an existing garment form (FIGS. 1 and 4) with double-sided adhesive tape (42), in order to duplicate the shape of a person to be fitted by a dressmaker or tailor. The pads are further secured by a fabric cover of stretch material (38 and 62) thus supporting the size and shape of the garment form (FIGS. 2 and 4) to accommodate many different individuals. The pliable foam pads are held to the form by the elastic cover (38 and 62) stretched over the form. The cover is then secured at the bottom with a drawstring (40). Each pad, labeled according to its appropriate position (56), enlarges any or all anatomical parts of the garment form (FIGS. 2, 4 and 5). For even further flexibility, smaller pieces of foam (36) can be attached to any of the individual foam pads to enlarge selected sections of the form. The flexibility in the sizing of an existing garment form greatly broadens the use of conventional garment forms.

  • Patent number: 5552555
Abstract: The present invention relates to a group of organic chelators whose affinity for calcium ion in solution is decreased by electromagnetic radiation. Specifically, the chelators are related to fura-2 and utilize the addition of an azide group to the 3-position of the benzofuran ring of a fura-2 type structure. Photolysis of the azide group causes the calcium ion affinity to decrease 100 to 1000 fold. These chelators when incorporated into rat fibroblasts either by microinjection or by incubation as the membrane-permeable, enzymatically-labile esters and flash-photolyzed cause large increases in intracellular free calcium ion. These chelators are used to generate controlled fast elevation of intracellular free calcium ion concentration to mimic or modulate a number of important cellular responses, especially in nerve or muscle.

  • Patent number: 5543239
Abstract: An improved electrode design for solid state devices, fuel cells, sensors and the like is made by incorporation of a porous layer of the electrolyte material over the dense electrolyte, and by the introduction of an electrocatalyst into the porous layer such that it is also continuous. The resulting electrode structure of dense electrolyte/porous electrolyte, continuous electrocatalyst and gas phase are present creating an enhanced three phase (TPB) length over that of conventional designs. The design allows for improved performance at lower temperatures which means a lower cost of materials, fewer problems from oxidation and corrosion, and improved durability. In a preferred embodiment, the dense electrolyte and porous electrolyte is yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), and the electrocatalyst is selected from silver; platinum; rhodium; palladium; iridium; ruthenium;(La.sub.1-x Sr.sub.x) MnO.sub.3, wherein x is 0 to 0.5;(La.sub.1-x Sr.sub.x) CoO.sub.3, wherein x is 0 to 0.6;(La.sub.1-x Sr.sub.x)(Co.sub.1-y Fe.

  • Patent number: 5500807
Abstract: The present invention provides a predictive method for selecting organic compounds having useful pharmaceutical activity in a mammal. The method uses volume areas of similar molecules. When specific substituents of the test compound file predetermined volumes, the compound is subject to a binding assay. Only when the binding assay is positive, is the experimental compound recommended for further pharmaceutical evaluation. Example compounds are derivatives of 4-substituted 2,6-diiodophenols of the structure: ##STR1## where R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are defined as aliphatic or substituted aliphatic moieties or aromatic or substituted aromatic moieties. Useful structures are described. The compounds have useful pharmaceutical properties to treat conditions in a human being, including hyperthyroidism, angina pectoris, arrythmia, and the like.

  • Patent number: 5498100
Abstract: A barrier system which provides a new and unique approach to separating traffic and provides a safe, convenient and effective means of controlling traffic. Segmented continuous interlocking barriers embedded in the roadway rise out of the roadway to prevent head-on collisions between opposing lanes of traffic to aid in the prevention of serious accidents and loss of life on any undivided roadway on a suspension or truss bridge. All electro-mechanical mechanisms are controlled by PLC programmable controllers, automation software and a data processor control system link with mobile end-system wireless link compatibles in a multi-capability environment to perform the electro-mechanical tasks in altering traffic lane configurations. A set performance schedule is set up according to traffic flow by user in the alternating of its mechanical barrier devices in sequential order, with means from pneumatic air cylinders.

  • Patent number: 5486462
Abstract: More effectively controlled expression of DNA sequences in coding desired heterologous proteins is achieved in differentiated eucaryotic cells by methods of this invention. Disclosed herein are control modules derived from selectively expressed genes of eucaryotic cells, such as, for example, insulin and chymotrypsin genes. These control elements contain cis-acting sequences which are responsive to indigenous trans-acting substances in the differentiated cell, which substances control the expression of the gene. Such cis-acting elements occur within the promoter region of such selectively expressed genes, and also in the five prime flanking region of the coding sequence in a position upstream of the promoter. These upstream enhancer sequences may be located using the methods disclosed herein, and ligated into differentiative expression modules for production of desired heterologous proteins.

  • Patent number: 5470538
Abstract: A pipette tip rack loader is disclosed that will load a flat of pipette tips into a rack for use on a laboratory bench. The flat for the pipette tips is substantially the same dimensions as the top surface of the tip rack to be loaded, and has an identical hole pattern so that the ends of the tips loaded in the flat can be positioned one-to-one in the holes of the tip rack. The loader consists of an upper platform that holds the flat and a lower platform or base that holds the unloaded tip rack. The upper platform is biased in a first position sufficiently high enough above the tip rack that the tips do not hit the rack. The upper platform can be depressed so that the tips in the flat thread into the tip rack holes. As the upper platform nears the tip rack, the flat is released from the upper platform to rest on the tip rack with the tips registered in the rack. Several flats with tips may be positioned in the loader with tips in the upper flats.

  • Patent number: 5466798
Abstract: The present invention relates to novel, powerful reducing agents, lithium aminoborohydrides which are prepared by addition of BH.sub.3 .cndot.THF to the corresponding dialkylamine at 25.degree. C. to give the intermediate amineborane complex. Subsequent deprotonation by strong base, e.g. n-BuLi, yields the aminoborohydride quantitatively. Lithium aminoborohydrides are powerful reducing agents, comparable in strength to lithium aluminum hydride. The activity is determined by the dialkylamine. Lithium pyrrolidinoborohydride has unique activity and selectivity in its reducing properties. Esters, lactones and anhydrides are reduced cleanly at 25.degree. C. to give the corresponding alcohols, while carboxylic acids are not reduced. Test reductions show that lithium pyrrolidinoborohydride is also capable of reducing a wide range of functional groups including amides, epoxides, oximes, nitriles and halides.
