  • Patent number: 8276091
Abstract: An apparatus and method for assessing a hazard associated with an object are disclosed. The apparatus includes a haptic input/output device coupled to a computer with haptic modeling software and a display device. A virtual object and a virtual passageway are displayed on the display device. The virtual passageway includes a haptic layer along a surface thereof. Force applied by a user to the haptic input/output device causes a cursor on the display device to move the virtual object into the virtual passageway. An interaction of the virtual object with the haptic layer generates a virtual contact force which may be determined by the user sensing a corresponding tactile feedback force generated by the haptic input/output device and/or by the computer processor. The magnitude of the virtual contact force may be used to assess a hazard associated with the virtual object.

  • Patent number: 8275754
Abstract: One particular implementation conforming to aspects of the present invention takes the form of a method for tracking the stability of a data set for multiple observers. More particularly, a tracker object may be used to both mark a particular state of the data and to query if the data remains unchanged. Code that accesses the data set to calculate a result may fetch a reference to a current tracker object associated with the data set. The code may compare the current tracker object received from the data set against the tracker object associated with the last cached result. In an alternate arrangement, a state may be associated with the data set to indicate some characteristics of the data set. The state value associated with the data set may further simplify the action required by a code accessing the data set to receive an accurate calculation.

  • Patent number: 8266326
Abstract: Techniques for integrating Information Systems with Application Servers are disclosed. The techniques can be used to implement a configurable connector interface that connects to existing interfaces used to access various Information Systems. The configurable connection interface can encapsulate these existing interfaces. Accordingly, the configurable connector interface can serve as a standard interface that can be used to connect an application server to various Information Systems. The configurable connection interface can be implemented as a “Resource Adaptor” that can be modified to fit the requirements of a particular existing interface used to access a particular information system (e.g., a database driver developed for a particular relational database). A Graphical User Interface (GUI) can be used to conveniently modify and deploy the modified Resource Adaptor file. These operations can conveniently be performed by using a deployment tool through a Graphical User Interface (GUI).

  • Patent number: 8254020
Abstract: A microscope assembly includes an illumination source coupled to an optical assembly by a coupler. The optical assembly includes an objective with optics that move along an optic axis. The illumination source generates a light blade that illuminates a portion of a sample at an illumination plane. The light blade induces a fluorescent emission from the sample that is projected through the objective optics to a detector. The focal plane of the objective optics is fixed with respect to the illumination source by the coupler so that the illumination plane is coincident with the focal plane as the objective optics move along the optic axis. The objective and illumination may be rapidly scanned along the optic axis to provide rapid three-dimensional imaging while the objective and illumination may also be rapidly scanned along the optic axis to provide rapid three-dimensional imaging.

  • Patent number: 8250579
Abstract: One embodiment may estimate the processing time of tasks requested by an application by maintaining a state-model for the application. The state model may include states that represent the tasks requested by the application, with each state including the average run-time of each task. In another embodiment, a state model may estimate which task is likely to be requested for processing after the current task is completed by providing edges in the state model connecting the states. Each edge in the state model may track the number of times the application transitions from one task to the next. Over time, data may be gathered representing the percentage of time that each edge is from a state node. Given this information, the scheduler may estimate the CPU cost of the next task based on the current state, the most likely transition, and the cost of the predicted next task.

  • Patent number: 8250084
Abstract: A method and system is provided to access one or more historical incident databases, for example, CDC, CPSC, DTI, AAPCC and the like, for standardizing the potentially differing categories and coding among the databases. The standardizing includes recoding of the categories by providing a unified set of categories reflective of similar categories found among the one or more databases, if any. Submission of search queries allows users to obtain unified data across the databases so that incident history statistics for one or more products tracked by commonly available databases may be easily acquired. The resulting reports and statistics may be used by various entities to understand historical incidents from multiple perspectives including, for example, injury and fatality statistics as a function of age group, type of injury, time periods, diagnosis, injury outcome, severity, and the like. Data may be presented in standardized formats or in any of the native database formats.
