Abstract: A manually powered fastening tool that stores and instantly releases the energy of a spring such that it forces a staple or other fastener into an object by an impact blow, wherein the operating handle is hinged near the end of the tool body opposite the end from which the staples exit. A staple ejecting plunger is unstably linked to spring actuating levers such that with the removal of a light holding force, the plunger and actuating levers are de-linked. The tool housing comprises a cantilevered rear profile.

Abstract: A disk drive system with adaptive positioning employs one or more storage disks for recording data, one or more read and write heads for performing input/output operation on the disks, with at least one of the heads being used as a servo head, a head-positioning mechanism for controlling the movement of the heads, and a digital compensator for predicting the post-seek displacement of the heads due to internal accelerations and to provide a compensating control signal to the head-positioning mechanism. The compensator includes means for approximating an nth order transfer function and learning algorithms for adapting to the dynamic response characteristics of an individual disk drive unit. The positioning of the heads is adapted to minimize post-seek displacements through trial seeks executed at disk startup and continually through background processes performed during normal input/output operations.

The guide rod includes a retention mechanism that holds the guide rod in place during the bone reduction procedure. The retention mechanism may include a finger member that contacts material within the bone to hold the guide rod in place.

The utensil includes a matrix material and a microwave absorptive material. The utensil may also be configured for direct conductive heat transfer heating of food into which the utensil is immersed. Alternatively, an appliance for applying therapeutic dry or moist heat to the human body may use pellets of the matrix and microwave absorptive material in a flexible moisture and heat transmissive body.
Abstract: Indole alkaloid compounds having the formula ##STR1## where R and R' are H, an alkyl group having up to 5 carbon atoms or --CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --CH.sub.3 where n=0 to 16. The indole alkaloid compounds and their reduction products are useful as both UV protective and anti-inflammatory agents.

Abstract: A color electroluminescence(EL) display element and the manufacturing method thereof which can improve an RC-time delay phenomenon and the contrast of the EL display element. According to the EL display element, an auxiliary metal electrode is formed on a transparent electrode. The auxiliary metal electrode is formed by forming on the transparent electrode a metal film having a high melting point and a low resistivity, such as molybdenenum, with a thickness of about 1000 .ANG., and then by selectively etching the metal film so that it remains on the boundary between each of R, G, and B color filters with a width of about 5 to 30 .mu.m. The color filters are formed on a circular polarizing plate and sealed up with the auxiliary metal electrode, and thus the circular polarizing plate absorbs an external light incident to and reflected from a metal electrode.
Abstract: A flip-up helmet mount for a night vision goggle includes a plurality of nested relatively movable brackets, the first of which is secured to a user's helmet. A second bracket pivots relative to the first to provide flip-up motion for the night vision goggle, and a third of the nested brackets is pivotal on the second bracket to provide a tilt angle adjustment for the night vision viewer. In order to both save battery power, and to prevent the user from inadvertently revealing his position by forgetting to turn off the night vision viewer before flipping it up, the support structure includes a magnetic flux source cooperable with a magnetically-responsive switch of the night vision viewer to maintain the viewer turned on only when the viewer is in its use position.

Abstract: A display rack having interconnecting sides, back and bottom. The back has a plurality of spaced slots in vertically and horizontally aligned rows. Trays are provided which connect to the back and the side walls. The same slots can be used to hold the trays in position or support fixtures having products suspended therefrom.
Abstract: A box for conveniently storing and dispensing food has a back wall and a slide connected to the back wall. The slide has a slide opening and two side tabs extending from the slide. A front wall with an opening is connected to the back wall. The box also has an interior supporting wall having first and second side slits. The slide is disposed within the box, with each of the tabs being inserted into a corresponding one of the slits. The box has an open position in which the openings are aligned and in which the contents of the box may be poured out, and a closed position. The box may be made of sulfate cellulose cardboard.
Abstract: A garment bag of the type having an elongate body substantially formed of flexible fabric or sheet material, and defining a cavity with a hanger support at the top for receiving hanging clothes on hangers. The bag folds double on itself for transport, and includes a pair of rigid wall portions which when the bag is folded double on itself are urged forcefully together. These rigid wall portions substantially immobilize the clothing items therebetween to greatly reduce creasing and wrinkling of the clothing items which would otherwise result from their shifting about in transit. The garment bag also includes features preserving the efforts of careful packing during folding and unfolding of the bag to further reduce clothes wrinkling. Also, the garment bag includes a specially configured toiletries kit which by its shape and placement in the folded bag further contributes to a reduction of clothes wrinkling.
Abstract: A magnetically balanced spinning apparatus having an upright rotating shaft assembly that is balanced by circumscribing magnets is disclosed. The rotating shaft assembly is constructed from a single shaft with at least two magnets mounted thereon in a spaced apart relationship. The rotating shaft assembly is balanced on a pivot point at the bottom and spins on a weight bearing surface. A frame having side support magnets generally circumscribes the rotating shaft assembly wherein the support magnets and the rotating magnets of the rotating shaft assembly react to repel each other thereby balancing the rotating shaft assembly in a vertical orientation, and simultaneously levitating the rotating shaft assembly to minimize the effects of gravity thereon.
Abstract: Improved bio-electronic devices in which a layer of a polyhydroxy oligomer is provided between the surface of a semiconductor material and an electronically active biochemical molecule which is designed to be bound to the semiconductor surface to provide an electronic device. The layer of polyhydroxy oligomer functions as a biochemical stabilization layer to prevent denaturization of the electronically active biochemical molecule.

Abstract: A method of making, including a method of floorplanning, an integrated circuit includes the separation of electrical logic function cells of the integrated circuit into sets or macros of data path cells, each of which evidence a high level of similarity or repetitiveness in the integrated circuit, and into sets of random logic cells, which each are connected to data path cells but which do not meet topological and connectivity criteria for the data path cells. The data path cells are iteratively sorted according to connectivity requirements and are initially placed on a provisional floor plan of the integrated circuit in a cell-space matrix of rows and columns, the rows being of substantially uniform width to accommodate functional modules of the data path cells, and the rows being of variably height to cooperatively define the spaces of the cell-space matrix.
Abstract: An apparatus for exposing a liquid to bactericidal radiation is disclosed. The apparatus includes a source of ultra-violet radiation and a non-opaque housing enclosing the source of ultra-violet radiation to prevent exposure of the source to the liquid and permit exposure of the liquid to the radiation. Channels conforming to the shape of the housing are provided. Projections are formed in the channels to induce turbulent plug flow such that when the apparatus is inserted into a flow of liquid to be treated, the channels act to confine and direct liquid about the housing and the projections act to establish a continuous, cyclical flow in the channels between the housing and the channel walls to ensure exposure of the liquid to a lethal dose of the ultra-violet radiation of the source. Methods utilizing the apparatus for exposing a liquid to bactericidal radiation are also disclosed.
Abstract: A display hook and rack combination. The rack has a plurality of spaced openings into which the support fingers of a hook may be inserted. The rack has spaced protrusions thereon associated with the spaced openings and engaging the face plate of the hook providing support and stabilization to the hook so that it cannot be easily dislodged when a product, suspended on the hook, is removed therefrom.
