  • Patent number: 5524074
Abstract: A digital audio signal processor for adding harmonic content to an input audio signal through a non-linear transfer function with discontinuities. The discontinuities are generated by bit shifting each input value by an amount dependent on the sign and magnitude of the input value. The amount by which the input value is shifted is roughly inversely related to the magnitude of the logarithm of the input value. The transfer function is fractal and so provides increased harmonic content for all signal amplitudes.

  • Patent number: 5523899
Abstract: A method and apparatus for optimizing positional data for use in connection with a hard disk type magnetic memory storage device. The apparatus includes a pattern encoded on a dedicated track of the hard disk including first and second set of signals repetitively encoded in a series of cells. The method includes the steps of periodically accessing the dedicated track with the read/write head and calculating amplitude and phase information for a trigonometric instantaneous correction function. Amplitude and phase information are subsequently stored and the positional signal for the read/write head is continually modified by a most recent determination of the correction function. The apparatus of the present invention includes circuitry for distinguishing between sub-elements of the repetitive pattern on the hard disk.

  • Patent number: 5519734
Abstract: A decoder/de-interleaver comprises a de-interleaver for de-interleaving received interleaved encoded data that includes periodic decoder synchronization signals to produce de-interleaved encoded data. A decoder decodes the de-interleaved encoded data to produce output data. The de-interleaver has a latency such that the de-interleaved encoded data is delayed by (B-1) times a period of the decoder synchronization signals plus a constant interval, where B is the interleave depth. A synchronization pulse generator receives the interleaved and encoded data and generates decoder synchronization pulses that are substantially coincident with the decoder synchronization signals. A delay unit is connected between the synchronization pulse generator and the decoder for delaying the decoder synchronization pulses by the constant interval. The decoder thereby receives decoder synchronization pulses that correspond to previous decoder synchronization signals, but functions properly because the relative timing is correct.

  • Patent number: 5519435
Abstract: A plurality of movies are distributively stored in digitally encoded form on a mass storage unit such as a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Drives (RAID) disk drive array such that they can be viewed on demand by multiple users. A video server receives movie requests from users, and retrieves and transmits the requested movie data from the RAID array to processors at the respective user locations. The processors decode the retrieved data to produce video picture and audio information and display the corresponding movies on monitors. Temporal instantaneous digital data rate signatures for the movies are computed and stored, and a current composite signature is computed by summing the signatures for all movies currently being shown. When an additional movie is requested, the signature for the additional movie is combined with the current composite signature to produce a new composite signature.

  • Patent number: 5514616
Abstract: Methods of planarizing one or more layers having an irregular top surface topology in a semiconductor device based on an underlying MOS structure are disclosed. Methods of creating doped wells or regions for the underlying MOS structure are also disclosed, using thick oxide growths on the surface of the substrate to mask implantation of ions into the wells. A technique for creating a pair of adjacent complementary oppositely-doped wells, such as for a CMOS structure, using a thick oxide growths as a mask is also disclosed. One of the methods of planarizing the one or more layers involves depositing, densifying and re-flowing a layer of glass on top of the topological layer. Another method of planarizing the one or more layers involves depositing, densifying and chemical-mechanically polishing the deposited and densified glass, thereby avoiding an additional temperature cycle (i.e., for re-flowing the glass) which would adversely affect underlying diffusions.

  • Patent number: 5515480
Abstract: Gray scale input data, derived from continuous tone data, is transformed into pulse patterns for driving a marking engine so that a variety of marks of different sizes and shapes are formed in any given pixel region. Gray scale input data is arranged (received) as an array of pixels, in the native engine resolution, including multi-bit per pixel gray level values. A pixel in the array is analyzed in a transformation (window) to determine the pulse pattern output based on the gray level value of the current pixel and on the gray level values of adjacent vertical and horizontal pixels.

  • Patent number: 5514928
Abstract: A photomultiplier tube, image intensifier tube, or night vision device includes a cascade of plural microchannel plates which are physically and electrically connected together to provide an electron multiplication through the microchannel plate cascade. At least two adjacent microchannel plates in the cascade are also physically interbonded to one another. The bonding of the adjacent microchannel plates may be accomplished by use of a metallic interbonding layer covering all except a peripheral edge portion of at least one face of one or both of the bonded microchannel plates, which interbonding layer confronts and bonds with the other of the bonded microchannel plates. The interbonding layer may cover only a peripheral annular portion of the one face of the one bonded microchannel plate, or only sub-areas of this peripheral annular portion of this one microchannel plate. During manufacturing of such an image intensifier tube, the microchannel plates are initially fabricated and handled as individuals.

  • Patent number: 5511777
Abstract: A hollow, tube-shaped ball bat having a damping core made a tube of brass wrapped in a resilient sleeve made from polystyrene closed cell foam is disclosed. The damping core is forcibly inserted into the interior of the hollow bat by compressing the resilient sleeve. When assembled into the bat, the resilient sleeve is under great compression. Furthermore, the tubing wall forming the bat is relatively thin to transmit the impact of the ball to the resilient sleeve. The processes to obtain a damped core bat are also disclosed. A tube is provided which is swaged to form a barrel portion, a tapered portion, and a handle portion. The resilient sleeve is compressed and inserted into the open top of the tube. Alternatively, the damping core is inserted into the tube and the inner damper which has a tube structure is expanded radially to compress the resilient sleeve between it and the tube wall. The top of the tube is covered by a cap and the bottom of the tube is enclosed with a knob.
