  • Patent number: 6162409
Abstract: An exhaust gas stream containing oxides of nitrogen and sulfur from a fossil fuel fired boiler, a fired process heater, or a chemical process are diverted from a stack prior to emission to the atmosphere through a duct system to a mixer where an oxidant, such as ozone, is added to the exhaust gas at a preselected molar ratio for a preselected residence time to transform the oxides to higher order nitrogen oxides. The oxidized contaminants are treated with a reagent solution. The reagent solution absorbs the oxidized contaminants and unreacted oxidant in the exhaust gas stream. Nitrogen and sulfur oxides in the gas steam are transformed to dilute acids which are neutralized to form salts suitable for discharge to a municipal waste water treatment plant or landfill disposal. The salt solution is also useful as a fertilizer or in the manufacture of fertilizers. The treated exhaust gas is then emitted from an exhaust stack containing NO.sub.x and SO.sub.

  • Patent number: 6155554
Abstract: A stack of sheets or blanks are supported for individual high speed feeding from the bottom of the stack on a table positioned adjacent to a feed cylinder. An air blast from a pivotal nozzle deflects the leading edge of the bottom blank downwardly into engagement by suction force with the surface of the feed cylinder. Rotation of the feed cylinder separates the bottom blank from the stack. A plurality of rocker arms are then oscillated forwardly into the gap between the stack and the separated bottom blank. The rocker arms are independently, rotatably supported transverse to the leading edge of the stack. The position of the rocker arms is adjustable to support the stack as determined by the die cut configuration of the blanks. A fast cam actuates oscillation of centrally positioned rocker arms beneath the central portion of the stack leading edge with an accompanying blast of air between the bottom blank and the stack.

  • Patent number: 6095961
Abstract: A series of overlapping envelope blanks are fed into contact with a pull-out roll which engages and accelerates the first blank to separate it from the remaining blanks. From the pull-out roll, the separated blank is fed onto the surface of a rotary aligning wheel. A plurality of aligning pins extend from the surface of the wheel and are positioned in spaced relation around the wheel. The separated blank is fed into contact with the aligning pins forcing the blank with its trailing edge engaged with the pull-out segment to maintain the separated blank aligned on the surface of the wheel. Vacuum ports are positioned on the surface of the wheel adjacent to the aligning pins. The negative pressure from the vacuum ports secures the sheet to the surface of the wheel as the sheet is aligned into a preselected position on the wheel by contact with the pins.

  • Patent number: 6070944
Abstract: A boom mounted cutter drum assembly of a continuous mining machine includes a center drum section, a pair of intermediate drum sections, and a pair of end drum sections. Spray nozzles on the cutting elements of the cutter drum assembly phasingly direct liquid spray at the mine face as mine material is dislodged to suppress dust and frictional ignition. Liquid for the spray nozzles is supplied on the mining machine through stationary annular housings positioned between the intermediate drum sections and the end drum sections. Water is conveyed through passageways in the annular housings to corresponding passageways in a sealing and valving assembly located in the end drum sections having stationary and rotating components. The gear case is surrounded on one side by a cat seal and on the other side by a lip seal to prevent liquid leakage from flowing into the gear case.

  • Patent number: 6068253
Abstract: A leading edge of a leading blank in a series of overlapping envelope blanks is fed at a preselected speed into contact with a rotatably mounted backing roller. The backing roller is mounted in a frame and is selectively adjustable between a first position and a second position. A rotatably mounted segment roller is positioned opposite the backing roller. A pull-out segment is a secured to a radial portion of the backing roller. A plurality of longitudinal slots are provided in the surface of the pull-out segment and are selectively connected to a source of negative pressure. The segment roller is driven at a preselected speed greater than the speed of the series of overlapping blank. In a first mode of operation, the backing roller is adjusted to a first position in the frame so that upon rotation, the pull-out segment frictionally engages the leading edge of the leading blank, separating it from the series of overlapping blanks.

  • Patent number: 6065455
Abstract: In an internal combustion engine, fuel is delivered from a fuel source through a pressurized fuel line into a first flow conditioner. A return pressure regulator is connected to the pressurized fuel line and bleeds excess fuel pressure back into the fuel source. The first flow conditioner disrupts the flow of the fuel in the fuel line and disperses the fuel molecules. From the first flow conditioner, the fuel travels into a fuel expander which is connected to a source of heat. The fuel is heated in the fuel expander thereby exciting the fuel molecules. From the fuel expander the fuel is directed through a second flow conditioner to further agitate the fuel molecules. A metered amount of fuel is then passed into the internal combustion engine for combustion by the engine. A fuel pressure regulator is connected to the internal combustion engine and maintains a constant fuel pressure in the fuel delivery system.

  • Patent number: 6036276
Abstract: A longitudinally extending conveyor discharge section is connected for horizontal and vertical pivotal movement on a frame of a mining machine. A pair of service shoes is connected at one end to the machine frame below the conveyor support frame for pivotal movement into and out of contact with the mine floor. A pair of double acting piston cylinder assemblies is connected at opposite ends to the conveyor discharge section and the service shoes. The conveyor discharge section and the service shoes are removably pinned to the machine frame. The pins for the conveyor discharge section are removed when it is desired to elevate the conveyor by actuation of the cylinder assemblies in a first mode. To perform maintenance operations on the mining machines, the machine frame is elevated by lowering the service shoes to engage the mine floor. The conveyor is lowered and pinned to the frame.

  • Patent number: 6016908
Abstract: A sheet of foldable material is die cut to form a support area to receive a compact disc. The sides of the disc support area have a length substantially equal to the diameter of the compact disc. A triangular flap extends from each side of the disc support area and is connected thereto by double fold lines forming an edge for articulation of pairs of flaps between an open position for receiving the disc and a closed position. In the closed position, the surface of the flaps are removed from contact with the disc readable surface. In the closed position, a first pair of flaps abut one another in a wedged fit preventing articulation of the flaps into contact with the disc readable surface. The second pair of flaps is folded into overlying relation with the first pair of flaps. The folded flaps are releasably connected to close the package so that the interior surface of the package is removed from contact with the disc readable surface.

  • Patent number: 5899128
Abstract: A continuous web of sheet material is fed through the lip of a first pair of driven pull rolls around a series of idler rollers and through the nip of a second pair of driven pull rolls. The pairs of pull rolls are selectively rotated to exert a desired tension on the web in a tension zone formed between the pairs of rolls. One pair of pull rolls operates as feed rolls to advance a preselected length of the web to a rotating cutter mechanism so that envelope blanks of a selected length are cut from the web for each revolution of the cutter mechanism. The feed rolls are operated by a servo-controlled motor responsive to an operator initiated signal to adjust the feed length without interrupting the feed of the web to the cutter mechanism. The second pair of pull rolls operates as tension rolls and is servo-motor controlled to maintain a preselected tension on the web fed to the cutter mechanism.

  • Patent number: 5830609
Abstract: A paper substrate is laminated with a metalized layer forming a mirrored surface. A partially transparent black diffraction grating is applied by stochastic screening to the mirrored surface. The diffraction grating forms a frequency modulated pattern from selected geometric shapes. Information, such as alphanumeric indicia or graphics, is printed on the stochastic screen to thus form a reflective diffraction device which is printable in a conventional manner while inhibiting reproduction of the printed information by conventional techniques, including black and white and color photo-reproduction and facsimile machines. The partially transparent black stochastic screen forms a diffraction grating on the metalized layer so that when illuminated from the light source of either a specular or diffuse illumination-type photocopier, random interference patterns of light occur at the interface of the metalized surface and the stochastic screen.

  • Patent number: 5807228
Abstract: An envelope blank is conveyed by a transport system in an envelope making machine to a folding mechanism that folds one or more flaps of the blank. In folding a side flap, the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line is conveyed along a convex face of a plowshare. The plowshare face applies at the leading edge of the blank adjacent to the score line a force which bends the side flap through an angle of 180.degree. to a position where the flap is folded to overlap the blank. A crease is formed on the score line to permanently set the flap on the blank. The folding of the flap is initiated by the convex face of the plowshare. Extending from the upper edge of the plowshare face is a grid-like network of flexible rods mounted to follow the helical path of the plowshare face. The free edge portion of the flap is supported by the grid to follow the flap leading edge being folded by the plowshare.

  • Patent number: 5770090
Abstract: A waste water stream containing a heavy metal such as chromium, zinc, copper, and the like is directed from a source after pH adjustment to a tank containing adsorption material in the form of granular activated carbon. A waste water stream is directed to the tank in either an upward or downward flow mode. The heavy metal is adsorbed onto the surface of the adsorption material which is pretreated to an initial pH in the range between about 1.5 to 2.5. The water stream free of the metal contaminant is directed to an effluent tank for safe discharge. Thereafter a stripping solution preferably containing sulfuric acid is circulated through the tank to remove the adsorbed metal for the adsorption material. The metal is carried by the stripping solution from the tank to an electrolytic metal recovery unit. The unit includes a cathode terminal and the stripping solution passes through a voltage potential resulting in electrolytic deposit of the heavy metal onto the cathode terminal.

  • Patent number: 5722711
Abstract: A bedliner for a vehicle cargo bed is formed of a non-grip polymeric material substantially covering the floor of the cargo bed. The material has a coefficient of friction suitable for allowing sliding movement of cargo placed on the bedliner. The bedliner is molded into longitudinally extending ribs and valleys to facilitate water drainage. Selectively positioned grip zones are formed on the bedliner by releasably engageable friction strips having a coefficient of friction higher than the coefficient of friction of the polymeric material to restrain undesired sliding movement of the cargo on the bedliner. The grip zones are preferably located in an area adjacent to the corners of the bedliner floor to allow cargo to be easily moved onto the bedliner and then shifted to the grip zones. Once the cargo is positioned on the grip zones, the friction strips restrain sliding movement of the cargo when the vehicle is in motion.

  • Patent number: 5642878
Abstract: A stack of sheets or blanks for feeding one by one from the bottom of the stack by a feeding mechanism is supported for high speed feeding to subsequent stations. A feed cylinder rotatably supported beneath the leading edge of the stack includes a suction device. An intermediate portion of the blank leading edge is drawn by the suction device downwardly toward an opening in the periphery of the feed cylinder. Continued rotation of the feed cylinder further bends the blank. For blanks of large size and having a leading edge with an irregular contour the blank leading edge intermediate portion extends forwardly from edge lateral portions. Positioned in spaced relation along the interior of the feed cylinder are a plurality of air manifolds having outlets directed at selected angles upon the lateral portions of the blank leading edge. The manifolds are connected to a source of pressurized air which is directed in a sweeping motion upon the blank leading edge lateral portions upon rotation of the feed cylinder.

  • Patent number: 5641953
Abstract: AC power at 15 amps and a radio frequency signal are transmitted in a coaxial cable to a telecommunications amplifier. The AC signal is separated from the RF signal by a radio frequency module. The AC signal is converted to a regulated DC voltage for supplying power to condition and amplify the radio frequency signal transmitted from the amplifier. A power supply module in the amplifier is connected through a bank of fuses and a power switch to the RF module. A cover plate overlies the fuses and the electrical connection between the power supply module and the RF module. The power switch includes a toggle lever movable between power on and power off positions to transmit power between the modules. To prevent exposure of operating personnel and the electrical equipment to the hazards of high voltage and electric shock, the toggle switch obstructs movement of the cover plate exposing the fuses in a power on position.

  • Patent number: 5639394
Abstract: An electrofusion coupling having an encapsulated electrical resistance heating element for fusing together the ends of polyethylene conduit is converted into a valve body by drilling a bore through the wall of the coupling into the flow passage which forms a valve chamber. A valve stem is inserted through an open end of the coupling and upwardly through the bore. A lower end of the stem is retained in the valve chamber and an upper end is connected to an actuator cap for rotating the stem. A ball closure member is then inserted through an open end of the coupling into the chamber for connection to the lower end of the valve stem. Rotation of the stem in the coupling moves the valve member between open and closed positions in the chamber. Polyethylene pipe fittings supporting spring biased valve seats are pressed through the ends of the coupling to capture and center the ball closure member between the seats in the valve chamber.

  • Patent number: 5611482
Abstract: A plurality of continuous feed storage envelopes are connected in a strip formed by a seal flap layer of glassine overlying a base layer of paper material. Connected envelopes are fed through a machine that cuts individual negative frames from a roll of developed film for insertion in the compartments of the envelopes. The envelopes are separated from one another in the series by tear lines. The lower edge of each envelope is sealed by a glue line. Extending transversely between the overlying layers are parallel spaced glue lines that form the lateral margins of each envelope. At one lateral margin the glue line extends the entire length of the envelope. At the opposite margin the glue line has a shortened length so that a portion of the overlying layers along one margin are not adhesively secured. When the envelopes are connected in the series, both lateral margins of each envelope remain sealed by the tear lines.
