  • Patent number: 6268890
Abstract: An image display apparatus is provided for reducing occurrences of moving image false-edges by preventing profound changes in “on”/“off” subfield distribution, and for displaying a sharp image that does not appear blurred. This is achieved by effectively dividing one TV field and by displaying a gray level of an input image signal using an “on”/“off” subfield combination, out of possible “on”/“off” subfield combinations for displaying the gray level, in which a number of subfields with large luminance weightings that are “on” is minimized.

  • Patent number: 6266189
Abstract: A zoom lens system has the first to fifth lens units from the object side. Refractive powers of the first to fifth lens units are positive, negative, negative, positive, negative, respectively. During zooming, the distances between the lens units are varied. Image blur compensation is made by parallel decentering the second lens unit. The second lens unit includes a first lens unit and a rear lens unit, either of which can be moved vertically to the optical axis to compensate for image blur. The distance between the front and rear lens units is fixed during a zooming mode.

  • Patent number: 6266583
Abstract: A system and method for improving the accuracy of altitude determinations in an inertial navigation system. Pressure measurements available to the inertial navigation system are used to initially calculate an estimated pressure altitude using the standard day model for the atmosphere. Temperature measurements are further utilized in the physical relationship between temperature, pressure, and altitude to compute a second computed altitude. A change between subsequent second computed altitudes is calculated and compared with a respective change in the computed pressure altitude in order to generate a correction value. The correction value is then used to modify the computed pressure altitude to generate a more accurate determination of the absolute altitude of the inertial navigation system.

  • Patent number: 6265721
Abstract: This invention provides an EDS detector in which even if connecting pipes vibrate due to gas flow, such vibration will not be transferred to a cryostat side and in which a small-sized gas-circulation-type refrigerator is provided in the cryostat sliding in a given direction, helium gas is supplied through the connecting pipes to the refrigerator, and an x-ray detecting element is cooled by means of the refrigerator. In connecting pipes, a connecting pipe body portion is connected to a pressure-converting value unit which is fixedly held in a vibration-proofing stand. Additionally, weights can be selectively applied to a flexible connecting pipe to further dampen vibrations.

  • Patent number: 6264571
Abstract: The present invention teaches a dynamically balanced putter with a sliding hosel to ensure that the center of mass of the putter lies on the axis defined by the putter shaft. The putter head includes a longitudinal slot which mates with an elongated “dovetail” tab on the hosel to slidingly position the axis, hosel, and putter head such that the aforementioned balancing objective is achieved. In a preferred embodiment, a dovetailed tab is mated with a mating slot, and the putter head is slid into a position with minor adjustments following an initial balancing, which results in a dynamic balancing of the entire putter. By rotating the putter about the shaft or suspending the shaft and evaluating the angle against vertical, minute adjustments can be made by sliding the putter head along the dovetailed tab until complete balancing is achieved. Once the putter head has been fixed using either a strong adhesive or other fixing means, the putter can then be used in its intended manner.

  • Patent number: 6263081
Abstract: A fixed-point multiple calculation apparatus, for use in an encryption method and a signature method that use elliptic curves, finds multiples of a fixed point and an arbitrary point at high speed. The fixed-point multiple calculation apparatus generates a pre-computation tables for multiples of digits at one-word intervals and for multiples of digits at half-word intervals. Using the tables, multiples of points on an elliptic curve are calculated using a doubling process, but with a reduced number of additions. This reduces the overall amount of required calculation.

  • Patent number: 6262944
Abstract: An acoustic array including a plurality of acoustic sensors positioned at predetermined telemetry points for measuring the acoustic energy from the surrounding environment. The acoustic sensors are each positioned within a fluid-filled pocket in the acoustic array, wherein each the various fluid-filled pockets are separated from each other by a section of solid fill buoyant material. The sections of solid fill material control the buoyancy of the acoustic array. The acoustic array is surrounded by a longitudinally extending outer hosewall which encloses the acoustic array and forms the fluid-filled pockets between the sections of solid fill material. A strength member is extended longitudinally throughout the length of the acoustic array to provide a load bearing mechanism for distributing longitudinal tensile loads applied to the acoustic array, while support spacers are situated within the acoustic array to provide radial support for the acoustic array.

  • Patent number: 6259089
Abstract: A gyroscope which utilizes light waves to sense motion in the plane of the substrate. The gyroscope has a primary optical waveguide which is adapted to pass light from a single light source through the primary optical waveguide in both directions. The light exiting from each end of the primary optical waveguide is withdrawn and passed through two dedicated waveguides (one dedicated waveguide for each end of the primary optical waveguide). Preferably, these two dedicated waveguides have differing times for light travel such that one of the dedicated waveguides emits its light one-quarter wavelength behind the other dedicated waveguide. The light being emitted from each dedicated waveguide is then combined permitting a sensor to monitor any shifts between the two light signals as a monitor to motion of the primary optical waveguide.

  • Patent number: 6251087
Abstract: The present invention sets forth a foot measuring device that assists the practitioner in selecting the correct size casting plate for fitting a patient with an orthosis. It is designed to measure the distance between the patient's heel and the sulcus of his toes. By providing a more accurate measurement of a patient's foot through the heel to sulcus measurement, the fitting of a casting plate is more precise. An accurate fit provides proper biomechanical alignment, better positioning of the foot, and even pressure distribution of weight over the foot. Even pressure distribution promotes improved balance, stability, support and enhanced sensory feedback.

  • Patent number: 6252658
Abstract: A particle size distribution measuring apparatus includes a source of laser light for providing a laser beam to a sample cell that can hold a sample to be measured. A condenser lens converges the laser beam towards the sample cell along an optical axis. The position on the other side of the sample cell is a ring detector unit that can be aligned with the optical axis to measure light intensity at relatively small scattering angles from contact with particles in the sample cell. An array of detectors can be operatively positioned on a substrate with appropriate amplifying multiplying and analog to digital conversion capacity for measuring light intensity at relatively large scatter angles. The outputs of the ring detector unit and the array of detectors can be used to determine the particle size distribution of particles in the sample.

  • Patent number: 6253305
Abstract: A microprocessor is provided for supporting reduction of codes in size, wherein instructions are extended in units of 0.5 word from a basic one word code. A word of instruction, fetched from an external memory, is transferred to a decoding register via instruction buffers and a selector both operate in units of half words, then is decoded by a decoder. A storage unit stores a state of an instruction stored in an instruction buffer. A controlling unit controls the selector so that the instructions are transferred from instruction buffers to the decoding register in units of half words based on a direction from the decoder and the states stored in the storage unit.
